Hi there, I recently wanted to start buying Everyman's Library editions of my favorite classics because they are durable and attractive. So first I bought Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Anne of Green Gables from Amazon. As soon as I opened Jane Eyre there was a strong adhesive/burnt rubber type of odor. It was so unpleasant it gave me a headache and I couldn't read from it for more than a few minutes. However, Wuthering Heights and Anne of Green Gables had no such odor. I exchanged Jane Eyre, but the replacement copy smelled the same. So I returned it along with Wuthering Heights for a refund, even though Wuthering Heights was fine, because I had wanted a matching set.

Then I went to my local bookstore to see the Everyman's editions of Jane Austen's novels. Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion had no odor at all, but Pride and Prejudice had that same adhesive/burnt rubber type smell. So I didn't buy any of them because, again, I wanted a matching hardcover set.

I was just reading reviews, on Amazon, of the three volume set of War and Peace and one person mentioned that same odor. However, they said it luckily faded over time.

Has anyone here had this experience with Everyman's Library, and if so, did the odor ever disappear altogether? There are about eleven volumes I would like to buy, but only if I can read them without getting a headache from the smell.

I tried contacting the publisher a couple of times to ask about this, but they never responded.

Yes, I emailed the publisher twice over the past few months but they never responded.
