An ISBN would be great. :) I'm not necessarily looking for the translation that is closest to the original, but something that has a good balance of nice flow as well.

Overall favourites?

Technically, the thread is only The Iliad, but a few of us felt the same translator was strong for both. My choice was Richmond Lattimore, but for flow, you might like Robert Fagles.

I'm a Robert Fagles fan for both. As >2 legallypuzzled: says, good flow, and it's sleeker, more modern.

Stanley Lombardo's translations are interesting, and even more modern. They're probably the fastest reads for most people.

I think for someone with little Greek, a good choice is Stanley Lombardo. If you want a verse translation that flows in contemporary American English, this is the translation for you. For a literal translation, Emile Victor Rieu is a good choice. It's a prose translation.

My favorite translation is by Stanley Lombardo. His use of modern language gives the story a more realistic tone. I particularly enjoy the audio editions where Lombardo does the narration.
