I'll admit that work and an impending visit from my MIL, as well as having Thanksgiving at my house this year, have slowed me down and I am behind. I hope to catch up this week (Ha!). But please continue to discuss!

Ooh I am enjoying this - fun to see how everyone is playing each other. I also like the clues that are being dropped into the mystery of Prester John - silk worms (from the Orient), no horses (India). The thirst for adventure and undiscovered wealth is tempting at any point in time.
On another note, I couldn't help but equating the looting of Constantinople with reports I read about Baghdad after the invasion. To think that all the treasures, be they ancient texts, holy relics or art, could be taken to be redistributed by the victors. Inevitable I guess, and it has happened over and over again, certainly many museums would be half empty if spoils of war were returned.

I loved the guy outraged that someone would be so stupid as to think the world was a sphere. Inconceivable! And the philosophical justification for same was lovely. And convincing Baudolino that to find Prester John's realm, he's have to adopt Prester John's view of the cosmos. Impossible to find a guy living on a flat earth with a map assuming the world is a sphere, clearly.

Seeing the map that Zosimos drew was just crazy, but I suppose no less crazy than the old maps with whirlpools at the edges of the known world. I think that the reason why there is so much trickery going on is that most of the characters are a tad arrogant, making them easy targets.

They've also talked themselves into this Christian kingdom in the Far East. It's made up, and they're the ones who made it up, but they're so far in and so invested that they continue as though it were true. And because it's made up, how can they deny other people's made up claims about the same place?
