He'd like to take this moment and press it carefully in a big book, so that when he was old he could take it out occasionally and remember it.

3joannasephine
Vimes, when he answers the Assasins' demand to know what right he had to walk in as if he owned the place? Men at Arms?
5joannasephine
I so love that scene. But my books are still under dustsheets, so someone else can take my go. (Just couldn’t resist guessing it!)
6pinkozcat
OK - I'll take it with an easy one:
Anyone called Mister is NOT allowed in the Ladies. That sort of thing can only lead to hanky-panky.

7pwaites
Going Postal and the issue of who cleans out the Ladies restroom?
10pinkozcat
I haven't a clue so I will guess Moving Pictures
11anatwork.k
I think it might be referring to Chrysoprase. I will guess Thud.
13pinkozcat
Because we have a vast number of flies in XXXX and because TP might be having a gentle dig at us I will suggest guess that the quote comes from The Last Continent.
14pwaites
It's not The Last Continent or XXXX. Try thinking of the character who is so enterprising, that he'd charge flies rent.
15pinkozcat
I have and CMOT Dibbler comes to mind but he features in so many books that my heart quailed. Hogfather?
16anatwork.k
I'm with Minnie on Dibbler. Guessing at random, Men at Arms.
17mabith
Could it be Pyramids? The pyramid builder's son was a rampantly frugal accountant, as I recall (aka, I'm currently reading it again).
19Beorn_se_Bacaire
CMOT Dibbler in Soul Music?
21pinkozcat
I had decided that maybe it was the King of the Golden River but I'll put in for The Truth anyway.
22joannasephine
At the risk of yet again having to hand my turn on … Moving Pictures?
25Beorn_se_Bacaire
Gaspode in Men at Arms
27Beorn_se_Bacaire
"You don't let it, it...happens...it's what rivers do!"
28pinkozcat
Hmmmmm - Witches Abroad?
29hailsus
Rincewind in the last continent!
30Beorn_se_Bacaire
Correct, Hailsus. Over to you.
31anatwork.k
Quote, somebody!
32pinkozcat
OK - here is one right out of the left field.
The first couple of times the crazed idiot chased her she ran away out of sheer amazement.

34pinkozcat
No, not Wyrd Sisters
35pinkozcat
Hint:
When Nation was released there was some discussion about whether or not non-Discworld books were eligible on this forum and the decision was that anything written by Terry Pratchett was fair game.

37anatwork.k
I'm guessing The Long Earth.
38pinkozcat
No and no. There are almost 1,000 copies of this book registered here so there must be someone amongst us who has it.
39anatwork.k
Hmmm. Is it one of the Bromeliad ones? Truckers?
44pinkozcat
I wondered when you would say your piece.
Yes, it is from The Unadulterated Cat which I am re-reading at the moment.

Just take one of the books from the shelf - (I shut my eyes) and open it randomly to a page and pick a line randomly as long as it doesn't give too many hints - and post it.
Then hang onto the book and mark the page just in case you have to add a few more lines.
I am looking forward to your first contribution. :)

51anatwork.k
Or possibly Lords and Ladies?
52guido47
nope #51.
nope, Pinko, we had a 37+c day here recently.
So going to be a HOT> summer.
Is it too early to give a hint, or should I drag this out :-)

53joannasephine
Drag out further, Guido. If no-one’s guessed it by tomorrow, then add a hint. But you have to allow time for the Northern Hemispherians.
54pinkozcat
I agree with joanna. The USA is 12/15 hours behind Perth, the UK is 8 hours behind and Europe is 7 so we have to give them time for their morning coffee etc.
55guido47
I guess it those people from "The FAR East" I really have to think about. ie. USA (and Canada et. al.)
59pinkozcat
I know - I left you to do your own arithmetic. And come autumn you will be back to two hours ahead. We, thank goodness, don't have daylight saving here.
60anatwork.k
Soul Music?
64guido47
Sorry Pinko, NO.
Do you recon. our USA cousins are on-line yet?
Before "that Test" I was ready to stay awake till 3am. my "local time" (+10) Now...no more cricket tomorrow.
What's the point?
Hint 2) What are some of my greatest interests?

On the East Coast they will just be brewing their morning coffee. On the west Coast it is almost the middle of the night still; there is a threee hour time difference between east and west.
The Brits will be online but it is 12.15pm and they will mostly be at work.
I used to do the dog watch on the Starship Titanic bulletin board many moons ago and afternoon was a dead time.

Umm, #66, how can I say this gently...
I do respect "rats", why my cat (Max) usually brings me one a week (rent) but alas...

68mabith
The Science of Discworld (the first one)?
70mabith
ha, well, not being one of the 39 but having Ponder and the librarian certainly narrowed down the choices!
The role of the lower intestine in the efforts to build a better nation is one that is often neglected by historians.

78anatwork.k
I feel like it is Thief of Time.
79mabith
It is not.
Think about the books where there's a real invasion (though it's not the most obvious of those).

Has to be something with "Cohen the Barbarian".
I shouldn't say it. but I always think of The last hero

Someone had pulled away the weeds and debris, including the inevitable rotting mattress and decomposing armchair.
I will be away from my computer from Friday (late morning) until Sunday night - Australian Western Time so hopefully someone will get this one before that time.

94pinkozcat
No - not Night Watch
97anatwork.k
Will have to pass now since I'm traveling the next two days.
98pinkozcat
Not Feet of Clay and I'll be out of here in about 18 hours. Just for two days so hopefully someone will have it before then.
101mabith
How about an easy one (though that all depends on which books are you favorites, I suppose)...
People would take pains to tell her that beauty was only skin-deep, as if a man ever fell for an attractive pair of kidneys.

And the thread slipped off the page whilst I was away. No matter ...
THAT ALWAYS ANNOYS ME, he said. I MIGHT AS WELL INSTALL A REVOLVING DOOR.

'I've never seen anyone eat three of Throat Dibbler's sausages inna bun and look so happy,' said the Senior Wrangler.
108eclecticdodo
don't know why, but I'm thinking possibly unseen academicals
113Beorn_se_Bacaire
I'm betting he did too, lol.
If not I'm going to say The Last Continent--I know it's a Rincewind quote...

111 > I felt like it was IT too.
115pinkozcat
I hope that I am right; I am sort of re-reading Interesting Times at the moment when I am on the train so it is rather slow progress.
And ... um - I am female and straight. :)

There was the sound of laughter, somewhere in the darkness, and the clatter of pans. The scent of evening-opening flower hung thickly in the air.

121anatwork.k
Sounds Genua like. Witches Abroad?
122pinkozcat
No - sorry - not Witches Abroad
124pinkozcat
No - not The Light Fantastic either
127mabith
I'm sticking with the desert, so Small Gods?
134anatwork.k
It does sound rather Vetinari-ish. I will try Feet of Clay.
135pinkozcat
I'll try Equal Rites
137joannasephine
There was a lot of slightly cynical discussion about the nature of freedom in The Fifth Elephant ...?
138mabith
Nope, none of those. You're going along the right lines with Vetinari, but it's not a Watch book.
140mabith
You got it!
I knew that would be too much of a hint, but lost the place in the book the quote came from, so I couldn't add to it. I will attempt to learn a lesson from that.

"I did tell you the Watch has a werewolf on the staff,"
143pwaites
Going Postal? (Are you being sneaky?)
146Beorn_se_Bacaire
I thought about being sneaky, lol.
@mabith--got it in one.
@mabith--got it in one.
147mabith
Tragic heroes always moan when the gods take an interest in them, but it's the people the gods ignore who get the really tough deals.
149mabith
Nope. I'll add the next line if no one gets it in the next 12 hours or so.
This is an earlier book.

156Beorn_se_Bacaire
But it was just a guess...
"No one. Yet everyone tries."
"No one. Yet everyone tries."
157anatwork.k
That doesn't sound even remotely familiar but I shall take a stab with Sourcery?
158pinkozcat
I'll guess Night Watch
159Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither are correct.
161Beorn_se_Bacaire
Lol, no.
I'll post a hint after I wake up.
I'll post a hint after I wake up.
162Beorn_se_Bacaire
It's also an earlier book.
163mabith
I'm thinking Death in Sourcery. (But if by some chance I'm right, someone else can take it.)
164Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope. Neither is it DEATH
165joannasephine
Hmm, if it isn't Death ... the Sphinx? Pyramids?
166Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope--next line.
"No one. Yet everyone tries."
"And yet, again, I believe I felt you giving me a little assistance against the others?"
"No one. Yet everyone tries."
"And yet, again, I believe I felt you giving me a little assistance against the others?"
170Beorn_se_Bacaire
Correct, edrandrew--it is The Colour of Magic. The Conversation between Lady Luck and Fate--the first part is Fate talking...
Over to you.
Over to you.
171edrandrew
Right book, wrong conversation. OK, on with the next one...
you would have to employ two people just to hold your trousers up.
you would have to employ two people just to hold your trousers up.
172anatwork.k
The clowns in Men at Arms?
174joannasephine
The dream of a publisher, in Maskerade?
175edrandrew
Indeed in is the Dream of the Publisher - to have so much gold that you would have to employ...
Your turn joannasephine.
Your turn joannasephine.
176joannasephine
Argh, still not unpacked. Someone else take my turn.
177pinkozcat
OK - random quote from randomly selected book.
The last of the daylight trickled out of the landscape. And there suddenly seemed to be a great many rocks about.

It was two hundred dollars per capita; if per capita was a problem, decapita could be arranged.
185pinkozcat
I'll finish the trilogy ... Feet of Clay?
187anatwork.k
Making Money?
188edrandrew
Nor that either... I'll exend the quotation
you couldn't put a tax on knowledge.
The Patrician said you could. It was two hundred dollars per capita; if per capita was a problem decapita could be arranged.

195edrandrew
It being Christmas, I'll extend a bit further...
The wizards said that the University stood on magical ground and was therefore exempt from taxation and anyway you couldn't put a tax on knowledge.

Oh dear, still no joy. But perhaps a quote from over the page may help...
Mrs Evadne Cake was a medium, verging on small.
