Generic covers for a run of bound magazines

I have almost the entire run of Punch magazines from 1841 to approximately 1940. They have been bound in either complete year or semi-annual volumes. How would this group suggest that I show a cover for my volumes?

Since I know that I will be unable to find illustrations of each bound volume, my idea would be to take my generic Punch cover and add the volume number and dates to each separate image. I am not planning on scanning each volume separately, as there are approximately 150 volumes in the run.

If this is going to make anyone swoon, please let me know now. I am now terrified of putting in data which will cause people to harass me endlessly about my choice of covers. Please let me know the best way to have covers for my bound volumes of Punch. I will be pointing to this thread in the future so that I can explain why I've done my Punch covers a certain way.

Honestly, don't worry about a couple over-zealous people. You're allowed to use what you want on the covers for your own books, and your idea to use a generic one of it and just label it for each sounds completely reasonable.

No. You didn't look at my example. There's a publisher's binding which is in red, with Mr. Punch stamped in gilt on the front. That's what I have.

I probably would be less inclined to worry if it wasn't for the fact that I've been held up as a BAD EXAMPLE not just once, but twice.

I'd like to avoid that censure in the future.

Good. I see no problem with it (nor as such with your cat picture). I have some generic pictures myself, and yes: I have flagged them myself too. As I see it the intention of cover flagging is to hide them as options for other users, not to disallow people using them.

I see no problem with the generic picture. I did flag Tama as not-a-cover, and I hope you don't see that as holding you up as a bad example; it was done in the hope that it would prevent it from being shown to others as a potential cover, leaving you free to use it if you wished without annoying anyone else. (I'll admit that, pre-cover-flagging, I was annoyed by it - it kept showing up as a suggestion for my books, and at the time I suggested that Tim allow users to upload their own generic covers to prevent this. But I didn't think you were a bad person for using it as you did.)

(That's a very attractive cover you're using for Punch, by the way!)

Do whatever makes sense for you. If other people like your cover, they can use it too. If someone thinks of something else, they can upload that as another option.

LibraryThing is for all of us. With so many users with different ideas, nothing will make everyone happy. And I agree 100% with what BarkingMatt said above.
