Group Read : The Wheel of Time - The Eye of the World (Book 1)

For everyone joining the group read / re-read of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, we start here with book one, The Eye of the World.

Sorry for the delay in setting up the thread. I'm proposing we read a book every two months (especially as some of the later books are chunksters!), unless people feel we should read a book a month.

I'm here - not sure when I'm going to start reading though.

I thought we were reading this in June (that is what it says on the wiki page) so I started it last month, but I haven't finished it yet!
I am all for 2 months on each book, if not three ! I am thoroughly enjoying this one but it is long. Is anybody else reading it so far?

Sorry, Cathy; I thought I would have my own copies by June, but when I realised it would be July, I postponed the Group Read. I didn't manage to update the information everywhere, though. So now you have an extra month - though I'm pretty sure the later books get even longer!

I've just moved countries, so I'm still settling in. I have started the first chapter, though.

What I don't need is to start these again, but I'm very tempted. Otherwise, I don't think I'll make it to the end although I'm surprised when I pick up my pending book (somewhere around #10 or 11, I think) that I remember so much of the vocabulary.

I'd love to join in as well. I've been meaning to read this series for a long time, and since the series has finally been completed now ...
I'll have to free up some book commitments first.

What have you done to me? I started it this afternoon, and it looks like I'm going to have to read it again. I'm in chapter 9 - just about to get on the road.

Huh. I was checking my library to see if I had The Eye of the World and discovered that I somehow managed to aquire the first eleven books without ever reading the first. It seems that this group read was tailor made for me and I didn't even know it!

Congratulations, Amanda! It's quite a commitment.

O.K. I finished. I'm probably going right into *Great Hunt* because the Aes Sedai and Tar Valon may be my favorite parts in the whole series.
Oh....did anybody find a place for this in TIOLI for July?

My reading is rather slow this month, so I'm a long way behind you, Lizzie. As you've finished, do you have any thoughts or comments to share?

My thinking was one book every two months, but if everyone else is likely to finish The Eye of the World this month, we could do one a month, at least till the books get (even) larger.

I created TIOLI Challenge 21 so we could fit this in ;0)

I'll trot right over and put it on the TIOLI especially since I may not finish some others because of this one.
Thoughts? Well, no, not really. I do love the world. I simply ignore the Tolkien rip-offs and the lack of characterization, which gets worse as we progress, I think. It's a great summer relaxer!

I'd prefer to keep it to one every two months simply because I have so much other reading and I remember this series annoying me a bit after the fourth book. Spreading them out more will help.

I just finished The Eye of the World yesterday and jumped straight into The Great Hunt. I will keep an eye on this thread.

This is the first time I read this series and I really like it so far. (Gave the first book 4 1/2 stars) It gave me the same feeling I got the first time I read The Lord of the Rings. The sense of being dragged into a big and diverse fantasy world with a rich and deep history.

I do have some issues with how the magic seems to work. It seems so powerful and yet it doesn't seem to put too much strain on the wielder (unless he/she loses). I also struggle a bit with how the Trollocs are described. The diversity makes it hard for me to make a clear picture in my head of how they look as some have beaks and feathers, others have fur and muzzles. And who got the feet, and what about the hooves?.. Or the ram horns??

Does anybody else have these issues or am I just being silly?

Trond, I don't think that you're silly. I just realized that I've never tried to picture a Trolloc. I guess what I'm seeing is probably an Orc from LotR.

Lizzie, I have bad news for you ...

That's partially why I originally quit reading this series on the fourth book many years ago. I figure if I really spread them out this time, it won't be so noticeable.

Keep forgetting to post on this thread but I finally got round to The Eye of the World and enjoyed it. I've reserved The Great Hunt from the library for November.

#15 & 16 I had a hard time visualising the trollocs too.

#16 and 19 - Glad I'm not the only one. I just started to read The Fires of Heaven (book no. 5). I discovered that it was to heavy for me to read the whole series back to back, but every other book I read will be a WoT book.

Still enjoying the story. Especially the worldbuilding, digging through layers of layers of culture and history. Not to invested in Rands part of the story, but fortunately I find that the other characters like Mat and Perrin more than makes up for it.

And I'm just back to say that Nynaeve not only pulls her braid, she pulls Egwene's hair once (affectionately as if she were still Wisdom and Egwene were a little girl). I think though that this third one may be my favorite because of the time spent in Tar Valon. I know that I also enjoy Rand with the Aiel which will come up eventually. Like Morphy and Trond, I think I'm going to take a little break when I finish this one.

I didn't get my copy of the first book until mid-October, and am just getting to it. It is a re-read, but I've never read any of the others. Anyhow, I open it to the first page, and remember one of the things I really disliked about it. Is the Prologue really necessary? I don't want to be this up close and personal with the villain, it grosses me out, and it's TMI IMHO. Did anyone else have trouble with this?

I'm currently reading the second book, The Great Hunt. Took me a while to get into it but now I'm enjoying it a lot. Again, the prologue seemed a bit unnecessary.
