Fantastic beasts and where to find them movie!

This was announced in J.K. Rowling's official facebook page:

Warner Bros. announced on 12th September 2013 that J.K. Rowling would be making her screenwriting debut with 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', the first in a new film series which is part of their expanded creative partnership with J.K. Rowling. The films will be inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, and will feature the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander.

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of 'Fantastic Beasts', realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

Fascinating! One of my favorite things about HP has always been the wizarding world at large and I'm very interested in seeing more of that!

Just heard about this on the news! Does this mean there is a Quidditch Through the Ages movie in the future as well?

We're going to see the movie this afternoon - anybody else seen it yet?

I was going to go see it today, but decided to stay home instead, as it's snowing here. Maybe tomorrow.

Friends and I are in talks about seeing it.  Between professional and an array of social obligations, December's looking tricky.

Our daughter is coming home for Thanksgiving (we haven't seen her since Memorial Day weekend) and even if husband doesn't want to see it again, I want to go to see it with her. She and I read the HP books, husband didn't, and some of the references went by him, as they have done with all the HP movies.

I don't think I'm going to get to see it in the theater. Stupid back.

I saw it yesterday. I nearly cried during the opening credits; you see the WB logo and hear Hedwig's Theme, just like the first 8 movies. I did not see the plot twist at the end. I thought Mary Lou, a woman who wants to bring back the Salem Witch Trials, treated her children like crap and was borderline abusive. Eddie Redmayne was the perfect Newt, and Newt was a perfect representative of Hogwarts in America.

Saw it Tuesday night and enjoyed. American witches seem to be a bit more uptight than the Brits.

Just saw it, and I loved it! Hearing Hedwig's Theme at the beginning got to me, too.

Saw it yesterday. Very pleased.

I finally got to see it! I went Monday, but the power went out half way through. It has been driving me nuts not knowing how it continued and ended. Made it back to the theater finally today. I loved it! It was weird getting used to how easily all the adult wizards and witches cast spells and apporated. Although the beasts were amazing, I liked the character development much better. I hope the future movies will have more of Newt, the sisters, and the baker. It was a good dynamic.
