New thread!
The knocking came again, soft and urgent. She pulled the covers up to her chin.
'Who is it?' she whispered.

Witches Abroad? I'm thinking of the scene with the wolf.
4guido47
I'm thinking something with 'Tiffany', first one that comes to hand is A hat full of sky ?
ETA. I think I will re-read it anyway!

6guido47
OK Jim, do I have to go through all the 'Tiffany' novels or will you be gentle with me. How about
The Wee Free Men ?
The Wee Free Men ?
8guido47
Jim, Cricket is still playing, you can't go to sleep yet. OK. OK. It 'aint TEST but still...
MY last 2 goes:
Wintersmith or
I Shall wear Midnight
OR
it might be Hogfather
but do my 3 goes in one post count as cheating?
If so, and if I get it right, I forfeit to the next person.
Guido.

Not half as sneaky as I am going to be. Pratchett's women are strong and not afraid of the dark so it simply had to be an unexpected occurrence. It either had to be Ysabel or the princess.
17justjim
Ouch! That's every single book Rincewind has been in. Sometimes several times per book! Well, the concept, if not those exact words.
20eclecticdodo
equal rites?
21guido47
Hi Group,
I wonder if there is a 'complete text' DB of Pratchette's works.
I only mentioned this 'cos there is a complete DB for Patrick O'Brian 's works.
This would of course change the nature of these (28) threads. A bit like NOT using Mobile/Cell phones in a "trivia pub quest"?

Guido, mate. Just google any of the clues given here and you will be given the book and the page number. It's one of the reasons I don't play this game very much.
23pinkozcat
This is a case where Pratchett has quoted himself instead of quoting other authors. I said that it was tricky
26joannasephine
Yes and no – doing it is fine. It’s using it to help you win this game that’s underhanded.
The best place I’ve found for getting info about various Pratchett references is (or was – it hasn’t been updated since 2008) the Annotated Pratchett File. It’s brilliant for finding out what some of the jokes, bits of folklore, character names etc are based on, and for reminding you about bits you’d forgotten.
Just don’t expect to be able to merely dip in and out of it …

I went in and looked up an answer once but immediately and publicly withdrew from that particular game. It is no fun looking up the answer - the guessing is the fun part; the boring bit is waiting for someone to guess your quote.
No - not The Last Continent; not Rincewind at all.

28Beorn_se_Bacaire
Vimes in The Fifth Elephant?
31Beorn_se_Bacaire
Moist, in Going Postal?
33ronincats
How about Monstrous Regiment?
And I do occasionally google the quotes, but when I do, I don't participate in the game after that for that quote.

34pinkozcat
Sorry - not Monstrous Regiment
35Beorn_se_Bacaire
Going off the wall--The Wee Free Men?
37Beorn_se_Bacaire
Maaaybe...It seems that every book has somebody running away from Something...
Thief of Time?
Thief of Time?
38pinkozcat
No - not Thief of Time
41joannasephine
Snuff, and the pursuit onboard the Wonderful Fanny (insert sniggers here)?
If I'm right, Spunkypineapple can take my turn. Welcome to the game!
If I'm right, Spunkypineapple can take my turn. Welcome to the game!
42pinkozcat
Spunkypineapple has it anyway. It was the wet hen, Magret running away from the ball when the clock struck twelve.
Witches Abroad is the correct answer.
Witches Abroad is the correct answer.
43pinkozcat
I've messaged Spunkypineapple but with no response so I'll post an easy quote to get things going again.
"That wath Thcrapth!" said Igor, breaking into a run. "Thcraapththh?" said Agnes.
"That wath Thcrapth!" said Igor, breaking into a run. "Thcraapththh?" said Agnes.
45pinkozcat
Not The Fifth Elephant. Sorry ...
46Helenliz
Carpe Jugulum
Which it took me 3 attempts to spell...

48Helenliz
OK, well that might just have to wait until I get home from work.
shhhh, I'm not browsing t'interweb from work - honest I'm not >;-)

49pinkozcat
Please would someone - ANYONE - post a quote to get this thread going again. It would be a pity to abandon it.
50Nahkis
Well, all right, here goes nothing.
"{...} There was that Holy Wood moving picture fiasco a few years ago, yes? And that Music with Rocks In business not long after, we never got to the bottom of that. {...}"

#42 Sorry, I knew it was one of the Witches books, just wasn't expecting to get the right one. Then I kinda was distracted by unimportant things - work and such.
55Beorn_se_Bacaire
But they wore black anyways, because style trumps utility every time.
57Beorn_se_Bacaire
It's not that far out of the box--I can see your logic...but no.
58pinkozcat
Thinking along the same lines Night Watch?
60Beorn_se_Bacaire
Two more down...
62Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect!
65Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither are correct...
67Beorn_se_Bacaire
Non.
68pinkozcat
Back to basics then ... The Colour of Magic?
69Beorn_se_Bacaire
Way, way off.
The quote is part of a footnote...
The quote is part of a footnote...
71Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope.
72Beorn_se_Bacaire
It also is one of the later books...
74Beorn_se_Bacaire
Close, but no!
76Beorn_se_Bacaire
Still incorrect. But still so close.
78guido47
Going by the recent books I shall wear midnight?
80Beorn_se_Bacaire
Got it, Ozcat! Making Money it is.
81pinkozcat
Try this one ...
Vimes wasn't keen on games because they led to crowds, and crowds led to work for coppers.

83Beorn_se_Bacaire
Jingo?
If that's correct, someone else can take my turn.
If that's correct, someone else can take my turn.
102edrandrew
Nor those. This was the thoughts of a consummate on artist who was neither Moist con Lipwig nor CMOT Dibbler.
107edrandrew
I'll extend the quote...
"The cat grinned to himself. If you knew their dreams, you could handle people."
"The cat grinned to himself. If you knew their dreams, you could handle people."
108pinkozcat
It's not The Unadulterated Cat is it?
110edrandrew
It is indeed The Amazing Maurice. Over to you ronincats.
112justjim
Was that when Fred Colon took over command of the Watch in The Fifth Elephant? He certainly sorted out a lot of paperwork in a hurry.
114pinkozcat
A guess - Going Postal?
116edrandrew
I have a feeling it's the Unseen University's admin we have here - I'll try The Last Continent.
118joannasephine
Are we talking infernal paperwork? Eric?
123Nahkis
If pinkozcat didn't guess it, how about a hint? That emoticon of yours is just too sad to watch, ronincats.
125ronincats
Let me say that with the last guess we are finally in the correct strand of Discworld. But it isn't Men at Arms.
126pinkozcat
I'll try Feet of Clay then.
132ronincats
Guido has it! Vimes is actually thinking positively of the paperwork as an alternative to going on vacation.
136pinkozcat
No idea but it has to be a different country to explain the change of name so I will guess The Last Continent
137guido47
Sorry, Pinko. I think I might have to give several hints for this one.
1) Not one of the 40. Well as soon as I get that 'steam' one, it will be 40 :-)

138Heatherfleur
Hi all, may I guess Dodger?
139guido47
Welcome to LT Heatherfleur, and I/we are pleased you started (or so I presume) with our Discworld group. But alas no.
ETA. 2) Think descriptions of the canon.
ETA. 2) Think descriptions of the canon.
140joannasephine
Feeling quite pleased that I noticed the surname. The Discworld Companion?
141guido47
In the right type of book, but no Joanna, I even had to check the Companion and the new companion, Dibblers nephew is mentioned, but Not CMOT Briggs.
3) Think even more obscure, like, say, mappes.
PS. Feel free to look through my library of 65? (with more on the way) books :-)

142joannasephine
Guido, I never know how literally to take your seemingly throwaway comments, so I'll risk a blinding flash of the obvious and say ... The Discworld Mapp?
143guido47
Joanna, my throwaway comments are 'only' meant to mislead. I have several other maps and it is in none of those. I will consider that to be clue 4)
144Heatherfleur
Ahhh, I see now I should be adding this touchstone thingy, so is it Discworld: The Streets of Ankh-Morpork?
146Heatherfleur
Ooops sorry, didn't read above comment properly. I just perused your library and there's not much left to guess is there. I just hope the name is not a misdirect... So I'm going to say Nanny Ogg's Cookbook?
147guido47
On another thread in this group, or perhaps another one frequented by DW Nut, err. Fan, I mentioned I will get a lot more of this stuff. No, Not Nanny O's
esteemed cook book.
esteemed cook book.
148edrandrew
How about The Discworld Almanak - not one I've got or read, but it sound the sort of thing that would have small ads.
149guido47
Yeah! edrandrew I looked through all the other members who owned that book and didn't notice any of the usual regulars.
I promise if I ever win again, I'll try and be even more obscure :-)
I promise if I ever win again, I'll try and be even more obscure :-)
150pinkozcat
Don't do that. You have already lost me; I haven't a clue and am not even bothering to try any more.
151edrandrew
Apologies for the xxxxx, but it would make it a bit of a give away.
'I don't think I'm one of them, either', said xxxxx. 'i'm one of mine.'
'I don't think I'm one of them, either', said xxxxx. 'i'm one of mine.'
152guido47
Sorry 'pinko' if I have offended you. I guess there is a fine line between being obvious and being really obscure/arcane. On this group I am not really sure where I should draw the line.
Guido.
Guido.
153Heatherfleur
I want to say Thief of Time?
157ronincats
Would this be Carrot in Guards! Guards!?
159Beorn_se_Bacaire
Is it the Omnian preacher, in Carpe Jugulum?
160pinkozcat
It sounds to me like Mort although I am not sure who the speaker was - it could have been any one of three people.
162ronincats
If Om is involved, Small Gods?
164ronincats
"They'd never stopped, or even thought of stopping. You couldn't stop Tradition. You could only add to it."
165justjim
Would that be in regard to the Ceremony of the Archchancellor's Keys in The Last Continent?
167justjim
Oh! I really wasn't expecting that. I'm at work, but I just to happen to have a DW novel with me, so…
'I commend my soul to any god that can find it.'
'I commend my soul to any god that can find it.'
168Beorn_se_Bacaire
Men at Arms? I'm thinking it's the Patrician.
169justjim
While many would argue that Lord Vetinari's soul might be difficult to locate, although probably not to his face, that is neither the book nor the soul we seek.
171joannasephine
Moist, just before he is hanged? Going Postal?
173joannasephine
Hooray!
Hostage negotiations were always tricky, Carrot had learned. It paid not to rush things. Let the other man talk when he was ready.

175joannasephine
No, not Feet of Clay.
177joannasephine
Still no.
179joannasephine
And no again ... time for a hint?
180joannasephine
Ok, a hint from a little further down the page:
'We've got them down for everything but the Hide Park Flasher---'
'We've got them down for everything but the Hide Park Flasher---'
182joannasephine
Still no ...
184joannasephine
No again ... but on the bright side, there aren't that many Watch books left to go through ... ;-)
186pinkozcat
Guards! Guards! Also just guessing.
189ronincats
50-50 chance and I got it wrong! That's what it means...
so let me make a WILD guess that it is Jingo.
so let me make a WILD guess that it is Jingo.
190joannasephine
Hurrah! Roni has it!
191ronincats
Great! But I'm on my way out the door to a craft fair (my first as a seller) for the next two days. Would someone else please take my turn? Thanks!
192Nahkis
Well, I'll take a turn, since my guessing is getting me nowhere.
"Down in the stacks the very denim, or possibly flanellette, of the universe was tortured into very peculiar shapes."
"Down in the stacks the very denim, or possibly flanellette, of the universe was tortured into very peculiar shapes."
195Beorn_se_Bacaire
Hmmm. I know the quote, I really do...but for the life of me can't remember which book it's in.
The Last Continent?
The Last Continent?
197pinkozcat
Could it be Guards! Guards!?
198Nahkis
No luck yet. To be fair, similar quotes can be found in several books. Maybe a hint would be in order, if not now, then soon.
199joannasephine
Esk and Granny? Equal Rites?
