Cat news

I looked at the headings for all the threads on the first page of the group's messages and didn't find an obvious relevant thread, so I made one. It will probably prove to be a mistake, but it isn't noticeable yet.

This isn't entirely feline, but it is relevant to our group's cherished aims. It is tragic. Click on the picture.

Not sure that is such a great place for cats. Are they desexed? Probably not. Are they looked after (other than being feed) Probably not. It looks to me like a typical 'peasants, superstitious' approach to animals.

Sorry Robert, some things get up my nose. Superstition is one!

Not a lot of kittens there so I suspect that they are mostly desexed and they all look well fed.

But as the owner of two black cats I agree that anything is better than burning them because of their colour.

#4, #5 & #6 - I'm not a fan of 'community cats' in general because I think someone needs to take responsibility for the animals & make sure they are cared for properly & get any necessary vet care, not just food. But having said that, I guess life on an island like that one in Japan might seem like a pretty good life to them, there are probably not a lot of predators or much traffic for them to worry about & as pinkozcat said, they look relatively well fed... I'm just not sure how I feel about it TBH...

#5 guido47 good points but I remember seeing a documentary about that island and a vet makes monthly visits to check up on all the cats, even though they have no "official" owners the vet still knew which residents to call in on to check on the cats' health and well being.

I received an email from one of my daughters today. She is in Myanmar with her father at the moment and she sent me this ...

have seen Burmese cats in Burma! There is a breeder at Inle Lake who has sourced pure breed cats from around the world and is trying to re-establish the breed in this country.
We went to the cattery yesterday- it is on the ground floor of a very old and lovely house- there is an island which are situated their houses and grounds and a walkway over the water to the interaction area which is where they get fed. We arrived for their breakfast so there were plenty on display in all the colours- lovely lilacs and sables.
They were as gregarious and interactive as our Marmion street ones were, jumping into laps and on to shoulders, just because they could.

I am picking a few nits here because 'sable' is black and the black Burmese are, of course, called Bombay ... and the Burmese breed originally came from Siam; but I am looking forward to her photos and it is nice to know that there are cat lovers there trying to establish a national identity via the feline population.

Hmm, that sounds like an ABC Radio series :) A bit like Alistair Cooks 'Letters From America'!

And may I also thank you Robert #13. I have a friend (who enticed me to join LT) who is a 'cryptozoologist' (amateur) who has often pointed out, to me, the latest status of the various Wild Cat species.

I hope this time I have surprised him.

#14 - to continue the nit-picking - I always thought sable was dark brown, like the fur (and the Burmese cats), so I googled it. Sable is black when it applies to heraldry, but most other uses refer to it as a dark brown.

Whatever colour they are, it would be lovely to see Burmese cats in Burma! Please post pictures if you can.

The new species of oncilla appears to have been "hiding in plain site." This happens quite a bit - they DNA test and find that the brown kiwi is two species, although the clouded leopard was sufficiently different they might have guessed!

the following text "img src=" without the quote marks.
A double quote mark.
The URL from your junk file. Just click on the image, look at properties and copy that address. ie. Your URL for that picture.
Another double quote.
Greater than symbol (>)

Yes those 'pointy' things. Known in Mathematics for several hundred years. Co-opted by IT only in the last 50 or so years.

PS. I too have several 1000+ page HTML manuals. Unless you have looked at them recently, you forget and can't even navigate them! As happened to me wrt. this thread.

They are All Burmese! Not a Bombay to be seen...

You will have to search in India but I doubt that you will find any. The Burmese in Burma were all imported from overseas.

Those Burmese cats in Burma are something! I notice they are more unicolored and their "points" are very subdued compared to our breeds here in the US. They are just beautiful, I absolutely love the lilac and tawny colors for cats.
