DVD #80
Slither directed by James Gunn
Tags: horror, humor, sci fi, aliens, dvd, R
Rating: 4/5
Notes: Not as funny as I'd hoped, but still gross fun (ok, not cool to impregnate the cat, mmkay? {after-credit scene} or deer...or anything else furry/feathery, etc :P). Kind of reminded me of an 80's horror flick (the name of which I can't recall) where similar slug creatures jump into the victim's mouths.

Peeking in and man is that a creepy first cover to encounter. However, I was vaguely aware this film existed because Nathan Fillion. :P
3saraslibrary
Creepy and Freudian cover, definitely. Nathan who? :P Yeah, he wasn't too bad in it. He got a little tentacle-raped near the end, but he survived as the hero, of course.

DVD #81
Evidence directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi
Tags: horror, los angeles, california, nevada, checked out from work, dvd, NR
Rating: 4/5
Notes: This one's like a lot of those found-footage movies, which I wasn't expecting at all. I guess I should've paid more attention to the back cover ("The only evidence they have is captured video footage found on the victims' cameras and cell phones." D'oh! Right there). Radha Mitchell and Stephen Moyer don't get a lot of screen time either. Probably the most annoying thing about the movie, though, is the static noise and glitches during the found footage scenes. The ending might be surprsing for some, but enough clues were dropped at the beginning for horror fans to guess most of the twist. Still, I'd recommend it if you like found-footage horror flicks.

Cool. Hope you like it. :)
I half-assedly googled horror movies with blowtorches as the murder weapon and didn't come up with a whole lot. I remember a scene in Hostel, though, but I won't post that pic. XP And apparently a blowtorch is used in The Girl Next Door, which, unfortunately, I haven't seen. (I found that bit of info @ this groovy site, if you're interested. Most of the movies listed there I've seen and would recommend almost all of 'em.) And at good ol' IMDb: blowtorches & flamethrowers. Woo hoo! I'll bring the marshmallows. :P

Blowtorch/nipple torture instructions:
1. Impale the marshmallow on a needle
2. Pierce a person's nipple with it.
3. Blowtorch the marshmallow until it liquifies.
4. Lick off marshmallow.
And yes, this is exactly why I creep out people whenever I visit Walmart. ;)

DVD #83
Paranoid Park directed by Gus Van Sant
Tags: drama, portland, oregon, based on book, skateboarding, dvd, R
Rating: 5/5
Notes: I remember watching bits of this years ago, so it felt kind of like a rewatch. At 84 minutes, I still thought it could've been pared down, like the skateboarding scenes, which I thought were pointless and made it feel like part of a documentary. The ending might leave some viewers going, "WTH?", but it seemed like the appropriate response by the kid. I liked how nonlinear the movie was; it had me hooked from the beginning. I probably won't track the book down, but if I find a cheap copy, great.

Micky dear, technically you are butchering the English language, it was much different a long time ago, however it has evolved, and so continues to evolve...in fact, it is impossible to butcher a language, and no attempt to shackle it with rules and regulations has ever been effective. Since I know you like history, I'm assuming you know this already, right? :)

>43 saraslibrary: Excellent e-card. Yeah, I did that university thing for 5 1/2 years and have a decent set of alphabet soup to put after my name (although not nearly as impressive as many others I know). As for the link, children learning the language get special exemptions.
>44 Ape: Oh I'm all for descriptivism over prescriptivism (it's why I favour the OED). That being said, the evolution of the language is governed by need and as there's already a perfectly functional word for the concept you're trying to express with your made up word (and the fact that half the word you're using has nothing to do with the concept) makes it unlikely to be adapted as anything other than an inside joke. Which is fine. I'll just cringe away every time you use it.

I really don't think language evolved as a result of need. People talk, and the "rules" follow. Remember, words came first, the dictionary came second. The dictionary isn't a rule book, someone at some point said "Hey, I'm going to gather all the words I can and define them, as a reference, so people can look up the definition of words they don't know." Just because a word wasn't in that book didn't mean it wasn't real, it just meant the collector of the words didn't come across it in their search.
So, in my opinion, it's an important distinction between "reference" and "rule book." You can refer to a dictionary for definitions, but just because it isn't in there doesn't mean it's wrong.
So yeah, I'm going to continue being requestionitionary.

Before language, mostly all people did was eat and "reproduce" all the time. Language developed so men had more and more methods of wooing a lady, and women had more and more ways to say "Uhhhh, maybe later..."

The Operator directed by Jon Dichter
Tags: suspense, texas, dvd, R
Rating: 1/5
Notes: This movie took me forever to finish. I guess I was expecting more of an erotic thriller or something; it's not. It's basically about an a-hole attorney who gets what he deserves, so it's kind of hard to feel any sympathy for the guy. Not to mention I find legal proceedings very boring. Not recommended. Back to Half Price Books it goes.

Btw, I just saw the new ER list and, of course, requestered everything on it, even the (shudders) ebooks and audiobooks. Nothing really stood out for me, though (well, I loved the title for Try Not to Die at Grandma's House and 50 Reasons to Hate the French; and the cover for Best Gay Erotica 2014 wasn't too visually painful), so I don't really mind if I don't win anything. (I'm still waiting on How I Became a Teenage Survivalist and Quiet Kids: Helping Your Introverted Child Thrive in an Extroverted World.) Pandemic by Scott Sigler definitely had Stephen written all over it. And maybe Hollow City by Random Riggs for Micky? (But then again, I don't remember if that one was available to ship to Canada. That sucks if it doesn't.) And Tamara, I honestly couldn't guess what you would want. What did you request (if you did)?

The Radleys by Matt Haig
Tags: fiction, horror, vampires, england
Rating: 4/5
Notes: Vampire light. There are bits of superstitions (garlic, crosses) and supernatural elements (flying, levitating, that sort of thing), but it reads more like a family drama than horror (not necessarily a bad thing). It was very engaging at the beginning, but my interest was lost halfway through. At least the chapters are very short (maybe 3-4 pages on average), and there's some humor thrown in. Recommended.

Also, I would LOVE to bathe in virgin blood. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that most virgin women think they should be on bottom their first time, so....

Cool. :) It's a really good book, especially if you're looking for something vampire-y without the romance thrown in. Oh, wait. There's a bit of romance between a few characters, but it's not a paranormal romance, is what I meant to say. So you should be safe. ;)
Well, I'm not sure what to tell you about the virgin women/blood thing. I don't believe in pressuring anyone into doing something that's too uncomfortable for them. So maybe the second time around you could bathe in virgin blood? Or third...or fourth...or never, depending on how into the missionary position they are. Or just ask them to bleed into a cup. That should fix everything! :P

Princess Resurrection: Volume 2 by Yasunori Mitsunaga
Tags: fiction, juvenile, horror, manga, series, princess resurrection, monsters, vampires, werewolves, robots
Rating: 4/5
Notes: I wished I'd been able to find volume 1 before starting this one, because I was very lost while reading it. Oh well. At least one more book for my 13x13 challenge (vampire category).

Thanks, Linda! :) Most of the books I read are graphic novels and children's books, so they really pad up my numbers. If I counted words per book...well, let's say it'd be a lot less than 159 books. ;) Off to find your thread now!

I read a lot of YA and children's illustrated books. No one has ever thrown a book at me for my reading tastes.

>84 saraslibrary: From the title I thought someone had decided to write a vampiric back story for Boo Radley. Thank heavens that isn't the case.
95saraslibrary
Nope, nothing to do with To Kill a Mockingbird that I could tell (I haven't read the book, though), but Wikipedia's description definitely has him sounding kind of vampirish. And, yes, I totally had to google Boo Radley, because I'm so out of the loop on classics. Score 1 for Micky, especially since it's an American classic at that. (throws glitter on Micky for no other reason than she's hyped up on catnip)

Vampire Kisses: Blood Relatives #1 by Ellen Schreiber
Tags: fiction, juvenile, series, vampire kisses, horror, graphic novel, romance, vampires, based on book
Rating: 4/5
Notes: I haven't read the novels this manga/graphic series is based on, so I can't compare the two. The style is very much Japanese manga, but at least it reads like Korean and American mangas--left to right--which makes it so much quicker to get through. I'm not too crazy about romances, so that part of the book didn't appeal to me, but it was a very short (maybe 100 pages) and had a little mystery thrown in to the plot, which kept me interested. Recommended to the tween/YA paranormal romance crowd.

Okay, here goes. I wish Nora was here so she and Micky could tell me how wrong I am after I'm done. Also note that I'm referring to the United States only here, though you could extend it to Canada and Europe.
So, at one point in the not-so-distant past, people were terribly sexist. That's not to say that they were bad people, many of them did it unthinkingly, but generally speaking, men worked and women didn't. That's just how it was. Excluding unemployed man and the rare working woman, men held almost 100 percent of the jobs, and they supported stay-at-home women.
Then something wonderful happened. Feminism! Now, while it didn't happen overnight, once women were welcomed to the workplace the work force of our country essentially doubled. Had it happened at the snap of a finger, 50 percent of women would have gotten jobs, and 50 percent of men would have LOST their jobs.
It didn't quite work that way though, it took several decades. However, we are getting to the point now where women work just as much as men. You must realize that for every woman that works, it means a man is not. This is a GOOD thing!!! If 50 percent of women work and 50 percent don't, and 50 percent of men and work and 50 percent of men don't, then what's the problem?
Here's the problem. The working men will take an unemployed woman out to dinner. He'll pay the bill. Some day they might move in together, and he'll make all the money and she'll stay at home. Will working women do that? Will a working woman take an unemployed man out and pay the bill? Most will not.
There is a taboo with dating unemployed men. Their considered lazy and good-for-nothings. But that's not the case. The fact of the matter is, this country has ALWAYS only supported 50 percent of the population. Previously that 50 percent was all male, but now the working half is mixed-gendered, and that means the unemployed-half is mixed-gendered as well.
What is the result of this? If working men support stay-at-home wives, but working women won't date unemployed men, it means there are working women who are staying single in their 30's because they can't find a "good, working man," and there are unemployed men living in their parents basement into their 30's because no woman would ever give him the light of day.
This is VERY common right now. There are LOTS AND LOTS of single women, and LOTS AND LOTS of single men living with their parents. We call the ladies career, and we say they don't have time for men because they are busy working. Bullshit. Men have always had careers and that didn't stop them from starting families.
It is the taboo with working women dating and supporting unemployed men that is causing this issue, in my opinion. As soon as men can get used to the idea of women being bread winners and supporting them, and as soon as women can get passed their prejudice, people will continue to remain single late into life (assuming they ever find someone), because that's just the way things work.
Lovely intelligent bookreaders aren't averse to this prejudice either. I have seen people right here in this group say they would never date an unemployed man because it means they "don't have their shit together." Yes, that's what they said. How sad is that?

>140 Ape: Yes, but you were using rape humour to do it. Not ok in my book. Anything that makes light of a woman's (or man's) right to say no is highly problematic in my books. And now, I will step down from the soapbox and move on.
>142 Ape: Erm. I want to argue with some of this. First off, the job market looks significantly different in the 21st century than it did in say, 1920 (a date picked as this is when suffragists really started gaining traction and arguably feminism emerged in the mainstream). The argument that women are coming in and taking jobs men could have is... problematic because there has also been an expansion of jobs that simply didn't exist in the past. Second, I don't think women in their 30s who are single are in that status because they refuse to support a man (or not solely because of that). Singledom exists for a multitude of reasons and not just because women refuse to date someone who doesn't have a job. That being said, if it were the only reason, I can't knock it. It is extraordinarily difficult to support a family on a single income in this economy - finding a partner with income is just financially sound planning. I'm not saying that stigma against unemployed men doesn't exist (I'm not going to lie, I would be extremely hesitant to date someone who was unemployed myself) but I think that stigma isn't limited to a single gender. My two cents.

There has been an expansion of jobs, yes, but there has also been a reduction many other fields, especially factory jobs. You also have to take population growth into account.
I don't mean to imply that this is the ONLY reason people are single later in life now than they were in the past, but I do believe it is an incredibly large contributor.
Personally, I've never met a man in my life who said "I won't date a woman who doesn't have a job." Never, ever, ever in my life have I ever heard that. Ever! Likewise, it's INCREDIBLY rare for a woman to date an unemployed man.
So, yeah, I stand by what I said. More working women. More unemployed men. Working women refuse to date unemployed men. Men and women stay single later in life than ever.
Just think, Micky. If you only date working me, you are going to have to scrabble for the scraps. With unemployed men, you'll find a treasure trove of perfectly good men in the unemployed department - and you'll have the pick of the litter.
Rape jokes aside, do you REALLY think I would be such a bad catch? I'm unemployed, but does that make me totally worthless in the romance department? There is a vast (and ever-growing) sea of potential love interests, and it's a resource that is almost entirely untapped by your peers. Such are the rewards of being a progressive thinker!

>144 Ape:, Firstly, you would be a catch, especially if you do have some domestic skills ( I mean that totally seriously). If I was the breadwinner considering dating someone who was unemployed I would look at their willingness to be helpful around the house as a good tradeoff in addition to their other good qualities. Secondly, I suggest you look for some cougar who wants to have fun and spend money on you. Just my two cents. ;P If nothing else, it would get you someone to have fun with and get in the dating scene.
I hate being unemployed right now. I totally understand how you feel- it is a serious blow to my self esteem.

If I were willing to give up my option of having kids (which barring medical reasons, I'm not), then I potentially might be able to support an unemployed partner long-term but that in turn would limit my ability to save for our retirement and pursue interests such as travel, even taking into account the likely pay increases that come with moving upwards in my career.
Obviously, emotions and attraction are a weightier element in the decision on who I decide I want to spend my life with but this hypothetical unemployed guy is going to have to really actively pursue me because from where I'm standing, he's not someone I'm chasing down. But in all fairness, I wouldn't expect a man to find me a desirable partner if I was long-term unemployed either.

And THAT is exactly why I don't date online. Because most women think like that, and so none of them would give me the time of day. Why subject myself to that kind of ridicule? No thanks.
149MickyFine
>148 Ape: As someone who does the online dating, unless you have a crazy profile pic (such as guy in clown make-up - what what was he thinking?) or are truly douchey in your messages, we're not likely to ridicule you. We'll just ignore you if we're uninterested.
150Ape
Nope! I think we both agree a woman would never date an unemployed man, so there really isn't any point, is there?
151MickyFine
You never know. As one of my friend's is constantly reminding me, it only takes one. :)

I don't really have anything to add, other than yes, Stephen, you're too old to be cougar bait. :P Actually, I have no idea what the age limit is on that.
Oh, look, I read a book. It took me forever, but woo hoo! :P

Book #166
The Nightmare Factory: Volume 2 by Thomas Ligotti, et al.
Tags: fiction, horror, based on short stories, anthology, short stories, graphic novel, series, the nightmare factory, carnivals, monsters, dolls
Rating: 3/5
Notes: This is my first go at anything by Thomas Ligotti (that I recall). I wasn't too crazy about the illustrations, and the stories were a bit too odd, even for me; but at least the book's very short.

Poor Stephen!

Oh, I'm sure he could be cougar bait anytime he wants, even when he's 50 and she's...70 or so. o_0 Sexy.
156Ape
Ooooh, I read The Nightmare Factory for my Halloween reads once, although I'm not sure which volume it was. It was...interesting. I think I also gave it a 3 out of 5.
Don't get me wrong, young ladies have their appeal...but I generally like intelligent and mature women, and those are usually older than me. Not that age has any warrant on intelligence and maturity, but nevetheless... I think I would make wonderful cougar bait, but I think that sort of relationship has to be based on PHYSICAL attraction, and there are much better specimens than myself out there.

Yep, I think I remember you reading one of the Nighmare Factory books (I think the first one), because I made a mental note of reading the one above. I had hoped to get my hands on volume 1 before starting volume 2, but oh well. And you're right, it's definitely "interesting." It's not my cup of tea, but I may still look for volume 1, if it's cheap.
lol @ cougar bait. We should get you a t-shirt that says that, so when you're out and about, any cougar will see it as a green light. As for physical attraction and all that, cougars are just as insecure as the next person. There'll be people better or worse than you (that covers just about every aspect of life--from looks to intelligence to whatever), but you shouldn't let insecurities and low self-esteem get in the way. Just go for what you want. :)

I do wonder if wearing a shirt that says "Cougar bait" automatically makes it true.
Unfortunately, I still don't like going out in public, or socializing with people. Obviously I just need a lady to drug me, kidnap me, tie me to a bed, and do horrible naughty things to me when I wake up. That fixes EVERYTHING. Where can I find one of those? :P

Of course it makes it true (though this get-up is a little too freaky, imho). Plus wearing it would be like a free dating ad. :)
Where can you find one of those? What, a lady serial killer? :P Actually, I'm sure there are plenty of underground sites that cater to that. I mean, look at that cannibal in Germany. He found quite a few guys who were willing to let him eat them, so I'm more than sure you'll find a woman to drug you, kidnap you, tie you to the bed, and do horribly naughty things to you, maybe not in that order though. ;)

Choose Your Own Adventure: Dragon Day by Anson Montgomery
Tags: fiction, juvenile, fantasy, dragons, series, choose your own adventure, plot your own stories, contests
Rating: 4/5
Notes: There are no bad endings, so most young readers won't get too discouraged (though I seemed to find the quickest endings ever :/). However, some of the choices didn't flow well and made no sense at all. On the plus side, this series has become a lot more visual, which I like, with a lot more colorful illustrations than the black and white ones I remember from childhood. Very short, too (73 pages).

Thanks, everyone! (A little belated and hurried, sorry.) I hope everyone had a good Christmas as well. :)

I know, I'm sorry. You guys can whip me with a wet noodle if you want. :P Actually, I've been house hunting, and I'm in the process of getting rid of my dialup connection, so I won't be online as much. I'll probably just stick with internet access at work. Other than that, not much. Christmas was nice and mellow. (thinking, thinking) I honestly don't know what I've accomplished in the past week or so. How bad is that? :D How was your Christmas?
179MickyFine
Sounds like you've been super busy. Best of luck with the house hunting!
My Christmas was lovely. Hung out with my family, good dinner, all that jazz. I'm about to have a bunch more free time on my hands as the last day of my work contract is Tuesday. So I'll probably be around on LT more often for the next little while.

I have a couple interviews lined up in January for jobs at other libraries so hopefully one of those turns out well (i.e. I get the job). But I have every intention of trying to enjoy the time off. :)
