Do androids dream of electric sheep?

Starting this now - Anyone else got it on their bookshelf?

Yup, though mine is titled Blade Runner, with a movie tie-in cover.

I've always been troubled by the lack of parallelism in the title. The reference to sheep and sleep is to counting sheep as a remedy for insomnia, not to what one dreams of. But the notion of androids and dreaming and electric sheep is so arresting that that little shifting trick works. Kind of. But it bugs me, for some silly reason. I have to learn not to be so literal! ;)

I read it about a month ago and really enjoyed it. I borrowed it from the library in Five Great Novels by Philip K. Dick and I've been slowly reading the others. I didn't enjoy The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, I got completely lost in which drug induced, made up world the characters were in, but I'm currently enjoying Martian Time Slip.

I didn't realise until I read the back cover of this book but Dick's stories have been the basis of about 10 movies.... Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report....

I wonder if the title refers to the androids wishing for electric animals the way the humans wish for their own real animals. Deckard owns an electric sheep but dreams of having a real one or some other large animal, maybe for the androids, in an attempt to be seen as human as possible, they believe owning an electric sheep is the pinnacle of success or assimilation.

I read the book a while ago, but that piece is not in my memory banks. You may well have something there. I'll still be troubled, but maybe less so - thanks!

So far the book is engaging - I have seen Blade Runner and so far the book and film seem very different. What does anyone else think?

I should give this one a re-read, as I just purchased the blade runner 30th anniversary the other month; well-done.

#4 I liked Martian Time Slip a lot. I love the way he uses little offhand things, like the offering of a cigarette, to show significant shifts.

Yeah, by the first page, it gets really different, right? While I read it for the first time, having seen the movie first, I kept on running a timeline on what would have happened in the movie already, haha. Sure the differences are quite apparent; however, I appreciate both very much--especially on account of those differences.
