Edit: Ticker use suspended for now!

I'm Emilie, and this is my 5th year in the 75 challenge. I usually read a lot more; last year I hit 365 books, but I will try to keep it easy this year. I live in Michigan, am 32 years old, and work in the veterinary field. I enjoy classifying books, working with horses, and learning. Children's books (from board books to young adult), American and English fiction, animal books, and history/sociology are the topics I read most frequently.

Here's a breakdown of my 2013 stats:

Non-fiction total: 102
Non-fiction about animals: 57

Fiction total: 266
Adult: 57
YA: 50
Juvenile: 64
Picture books: 107

Dewey says I like folklore (398), zoology (591), animal husbandry (636), graphic novels (741), American fiction (813), British fiction (823), and European history (940). Thomas Jefferson says I'm big into world history (D), American history (E), general literature (PN), American literature (PS), children's literature (PZ), zoology (QL), and animal science (SF). All of these fields were in the double digits for books read last year.

I'm pretty burned out by 2013. I met my goal of a book a day for a year, but it made reading very stressful. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and rearrange the books on the shelves over and over. I'd have to start the next book within 5-15 minutes of finishing one. So many neuroses! My goal for this year is to relax and have fun. No personal goals whatsoever. (At least those having to do with hobbies!) I'm tempted to do away with my ticker. Hmmm...

Anyways, my first book of 2014 is a complete non-stressor, since it's about my favorite childhood author - and best author ever - Marguerite Henry.

Title: Write a Book For Me: The Story of Marguerite Henry (World Writers series)
Author: David R Collins
Genre: juvenile biography
Catalog: 813 / PS3515
Acquisition: 2 months ago

Marguerite was introduced to writing when she received a Christmas gift of a desk, paper, and pencils. It was 1909, and she was 7 years old. She loved to write, and as she grew up, she sold many articles to magazines while pursuing her teaching degree. She wrote a few children's books with the help of her illustrator neighbor. Her 'big break' was Justin Morgan Had a Horse. Once paired with the illustrator Wesley Dennis, they made a publisher's dream team - always selling big. From Justin Morgan, they went on to create Misty of Chincoteague, Bright of Grand Canyon, King of the Wind, Black Gold, and many more. Mrs Henry loved children and animals, and also loved researching books. After Dennis passed away, she considered never writing again; she eventually picked it back up, but at a much slower pace.

The book includes Mrs Henry's acceptance speech for the Newbery Medal for King of the Wind. (PS The book does not include Oxford commas, so watch out for funny phrases!)

Here's a lovely quote from Henry's Newbery speech: "It takes an understanding reader to discover his own book. The writer is no more than the farmer with his bag of seeds. The reader is a field, new plowed in spring. The farmer scatters his seeds, but all the plants that grow from them do not come up alike. Some are small and spindling and some are big and strong. That's the way it is with books. Sometimes a book gives you a small amount of happiness, and sometimes when you close the cover, the book grows big within you, like a boll of cotton bursting its seams."

And a bit from the book: "Sham, that grand and glorious stallion, pranced and danced, and flew with the lightning speed of a meteor. Yet Sham, like all of the author's horses, was a horse. Lesser writers created humanlike creatures, but Marguerite Henry never made that mistake. The courage and resourcefulness displayed by each of her horses were within the range of the animal world, true and crisp. To portray them too much like humans would be inaccurate. Worse than that, it would mislead her young readers. "A writer whose audience is young people must write with honesty and care," Marguerite wrote. "There is nothing more precious than a mind forming values, attitudes, and knowledge.""

This one is recommended for fans of Henry's works who have already read A Pictorial Life Story of Misty.

Happy New Year!

I am so impressed with your book a day last year--but I can see how stressful that would be.

I loved Marguerite Henry's books growing up. I think I have many of my childhood copies still in my possession, although in boxes and not cataloged neatly into LibraryThing.

Your review is the first I've read for the year--and a book bullet already!

Happy reading in 2014!

Thanks, guys!

I've kept my few childhood copies, but most of the books I read were from the school library. I've been trying to complete the 'set' as it were, and I have only a few left to collect. The good feelings I get from reading a Henry book stayed with me through adulthood. In fact, I'm getting another Henry book from Amazon in the mail tomorrow. Look for Dear Readers and Riders soon!

Title: Weirdos from Another Planet (Calvin & Hobbes)
Author: Bill Watterson
Genre: humor/comics
Catalog: 741 / PN6728
Acquisition: ancient, re-read

Barnes and Noble has a sale on the whole collection in paperback form - $66 for the entire series. Too bad Kyle just bought us a TV. Weirdos is actually a bit preachy, but when I think about it, back in the late 80s/early 90s, a lot of people were starting to bang the pollution drum, so I can forgive a bit. My favorite cartoons are always the ones with the snowmen.

Title: Dear Readers and Riders
Author: Marguerite Henry
Genre: non-fiction, horses
Catalog: 636 / SF302
Acquisition: a few days ago

Mrs Henry answers children's letters about her books, horses, herself, and writing. While the section on horse care is charmingly out of date, the majority of the book is still timeless. Reading the locations of the writers was a childish thrill - 'Oh, Mankato, MN - that's where Betsy Ray was based on!' or 'Maybe that girl who was writing from my town is now an adult that still lives here. Why doesn't the library have a copy of this book, resting on a special shrine, opened to that page?' I have such happy memories of Marguerite Henry's works, and this one is no exception.

Edit: Mrs Henry's enthusiasm about learning anything to do with horses is so lovely. I can stand in front of my bookcases and just stare at the books. 'She would have loved this book.' 'This is the book that inspired "Mustang Spirit of the West".' 'Oh, just look at the old-fashioned Morgans in this book.' It's so unbelievably peaceful.

Starred for this year again! I always enjoy seeing what animal books you read (and then adding them to my own TBR list).

Here's to a year of less-stressful reading. I'm an ardent supporter of reading what you like, when you like, at the pace you need for that given day. :)

"The Bluffer's Guide to Surfing"

A digital book. Hmm... I thought I un-requested this one. Given only the following blurb for this book (which may be the best blurb ever written), I would buy it:

How have I not heard of a graphic novel depicting the lives of Louis Leakey's students?!? Primates shows the struggles of Dian Fossey (who studied gorillas), Birute Galdikas (orangutans), and Jane Goodall (chimpanzees). Leakey funded these students out into the jungles, thinking that non-behavior-scientist women would be better observers of the great apes than the establishment. (He was pretty much right, as much as I hate to admit it.) I am SO picking this up at the library tomorrow!

Title: The Bluffer's Guide to Surfing
Author: Craig Jarvis
Genre: Non-fiction
Catalog: 797 / GV
Acquisition: yesterday

Oooo... My first digital book experience! I got a digital ER book for once. I am anti-digital-reader for several reasons, but I have nothing against those who love their e-readers. I borrowed my non-reader-but-tech-loving DH's Nook and took it out for a spin. Not too bad, but I stand by my little personal reasons for liking print.

Warning: I live in Michigan. While I have enjoyed many insane water sports on Lake Superior in my hedonistic and crazy college days, big wave surfing is something I have less than 0 experience with. I simply love the theory.

The Bluffer's Guide to Surfing is a (very) short summary of surfing. It dispenses with the 'hows' and 'whys' and gives you just the bullet points that will supposedly get you "in" with surfers, although I suspect a Bluffer's Guide to Wine, etc, would be safer than a cheat book about a sport that can kill you. I would not feel comfortable talking about surfing if this was my only information on the topic, but all the main points were there. I loved the humor, and the breezy writing style was perfect for the topic. There were a few places that could have done with pictures, diagrams, or just an illustration or two, but that tiny complaint aside, this was a fun book to read.

Title: What am I? Where Am I?
Author: Ted Lewin
Genre: picture book
Catalog: 590 / QL
Acquisition: library

This has the most interesting statement on the back in big, red type: "If you like to read, you will like this book."

Ted Lewin, animal painter extraordinaire, did a guessing game of sorts, where only a tiny portion of a painting is revealed on the right page, you guess what species or biome it is, and after the page flip, the whole illustration is shown. Cute idea, great illustrator, too bad there were only 22 pages.

Title: The Guardian Team: On the Job With Rena and Roo
Author: Cat Urbigkit
Genre: picture book
Catalog: 636 / SF
Acquisition: library

Urbigkit takes us through the process of getting livestock protection animals and training them by telling the story of Great Pyrenees Rena and wild donkey Roo. The photos and text are crisp and clear, and I loved that the animal personalities came through. Looking at the different behavior signals of the different species was fun (not part of the book, but amusing extra credit all the same). Recommended for those interested in animals.

Edit: Grammar check!

Title: Presidential Pets
Author: Julia Moberg
Genre: kid non-fiction
Catalog: 973 / E
Acquisition: library

Each president is given 2 pages. One is an illustration, and the other has a short bio, facts about other pets, and rhyming anecdotes about an incident. Some of what is considered a pet is a bit of a stretch - wild animal gifts from foreign dignitaries that were sent to live in zoos, horses that were used for transport before cars, hunting dogs, etc. That's a tiny quibble though; the rest of the book is nice and attractive. Average fare.

Title: Rats (Monsters of the Animal Kingdom)
Author: Rachel Lynette
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / QL
Acquisition: library

I'm not terribly thrilled by the title of the series, but if it gets kids to read it.... Only other tiny quibble is they used a photo of a domestic pet black-colored Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and called it the black rat, which is an entirely different species (Rattus rattus). While they used pet rats as illustrations for wild rats, they did surprisingly have a few real wild rat photos - most rat books use domestic stand-ins exclusively. Not the best kid's book, but not the worst either.

Title: Bone by Bone: Comparing Animal Skeletons
Author: Sara Levine
Genre: picture non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / QL

The illustrator's nom de plume is TS Spookytooth. Pretty neat.

"What kind of animal would you be if we took away your leg bones?" Then the next page illustrates a simplistic whale skeleton. The book goes like that throughout. Pretty neat.

Title: Track that Scat!
Author: Lisa Morlock
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 591 / QL
Acquisition: library

Another nifty find: a kid's book about animal poop! Where are all these permissive publishers coming from? Kid's books at this level about topics like these are so rare.

Finn and her dog Skeeter take a walk through the woods. On the way, they see animal tracks, evidence of meals, and piles of scat (animal feces). They guess what kind of animal was there. Sidebars have a bit of information about the species mentioned. The illustrations were a bit cutesy for me, but maybe this topic needs that to make up for the grossness. This one is way neater than you would think a book on this topic could be. Recommended for Midwestern kids who enjoy time in nature, those that are studying forest/animals in school, or those who enjoy bodily functions like burping, farting, etc.

Author: Jim Ottaviani and Maris Wicks
Genre: graphic novel
Catalog: 599 / QL
Acquisition: library

The famous anthropologist Louis Leakey funded the expeditions of 3 women to study primate behavior in the 1960s. This is the story of how they came to Leakey and their adventures in the wilds of Africa and Indonesia. Each girl had a very different voice; the author was very good about portraying them so. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in the topic!

I discovered an awesome series for kids called "Scientists in the Field". Each book profiles people working in a specific area; most books so far cover zoology, but there are a few other topics like astronomy. These books go over a project the scientist worked on. Most review research principles, how the person got into the field, information on the topic the scientist is working on, and the future of the field/project. Each book I've read so far is outstanding. I'd like to read the entire series. Here are the ones I've gotten to so far:

Title: Gorilla Doctors: Saving Endangered Great Apes
Author: Pamela Turner
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / SF
Acquisition: library

Profiles the veterinary staff of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project in Africa, gorilla biology, human-animal interactions, and zoonotic diseases (diseases that can go from animal to people and vice versa).

Title: The Frog Scientist
Author: Pamela Turner
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 597 / QL
Acquisition: library

Dr Tyrone Hayes is studying the effects of a pesticide in frog development and pond ecosystems. Focused on experiment design, Dr Hayes, frogs, and pollution control.

Title: Emi and the Rhino Scientist
Author: Mary Kay Carson
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / QL
Acquisition: library

I loved this one! Terri Roth is an animal scientist whose specialty is reproduction. She is part of a task force that was charged with breeding a Sumatran rhino - something that hasn't been done in over 100 years. (Spoiler: She did it, multiple times!) There was loads of information on rhinos, and the story of the female rhino Emi was woven throughout. Delightful and engaging, recommended.

Title: Science Warriors: The Battle Against Invasive Species
Author: Sneed Collard 3
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 578 / SB
Acquisition: library

The unifying thread is invasive species - fire ants in the southern US, brown tree snakes in Guam, zebra mussels in the Great Lakes, and melaleuca trees in the Everglades. Control and prevention methods are the focus of each research team.

Title: Wild Horse Scientists
Author: Kay Frydenborg
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / SF
Acquisition: library

Development of the horse contraceptive PZP, management of the Chincoteague ponies/Assateague wild horses, field research concepts, and population control. Slightly more advanced in reading level/maturity than the others so far.

Title: Wild Horses: Galloping Through Time
Author: Kelly Milner Halls
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / QL(SF?)
Acquisition: library

Half of the book describes the ancestors of the horse, while the latter half goes over various species and breeds of wild/feral equids. There are the usual asses, horses, zebras, and Przwalskis, but the author and/or editor is not terribly clear on the difference of species vs breed and wild vs feral. Many feral horses are profiled amongst the undomesticated wild species. Either the editor or the book designer needed some help with this one.

When an regular outline goes something like this:
I. regrfg
---A. luihgfhgbj
------1. gfsdfgfsdfgf
---------a. fhgdfh
------2. dfgfsdg

This book's concepts were turned into
I. dfgffdg
A. fdgfdgf
1. fdgfsdgf
a. fdsgffdgf
2. oihhjg

I'm not sure how to explain it. Anyways, this one was good in theory, and I suppose if you are really super passionate about equine evolution it would be a good read, but otherwise there are better ways to spend your time.

Title: The Tapir Scientist: Saving South America's Largest Mammal
Author: Sy Montgomery
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 599 / QL
Acquisition: library

Another entry in the "Scientists in the Field" series. This one had a higher reading level than others, but the concepts were easier. This one was more narrative non-fiction than the others, too. The author and photographer tag along with a research team trying to capture and tag tapirs in Brazil. Not as much info on tapirs, but many stories about the author's trip.

Acquisition: library

Geothermal vents, research subs, lots of worms and clams.

Title: The Wildlife Detectives: How Forensic Scientists Fight Crimes Against Nature
Author: Donna Jackson
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 363 / HV

Shorter than others. Who killed a famous elk in Yellowstone? The story is interrupted by pages of facts.

Title: Secrets of Sound: Studying the Calls and Songs of Whales, Elephants, and Birds

And some books *not* in the series I'm in the middle of....

Title: Surfer of the Century
Author: Ellie Crowe
Genre: picture book
Catalog: 797 / GV
Acquisition: 3 hours ago

Duke Kahanamoku is pretty much recognized as the father of surfing, but he was also an Olympic swimmer. This book is about his journey to the Olympics in the early 1900s. The illustrations took me a page or two to get used to, but they ended up suiting the book very well.

Title: The Great Kapok Tree
Author: Lynne Cherry
Genre: picture book
Catalog: fic / PZ
Acquisition: 3 hours ago

So... I am tripping balls on this one. The illustrations of rainforest animals are exactly like a stamp set I used to have when I was little. Exactly. Either the author/illustrator 'cheated' a bit or the stamp set was based on this book. Considering I have matching sets in Fantasy and Oceans, I doubt the book came first. I googled the shizz out of this, but I couldn't find the stamp set or any mention of them and the book together. I'm not crazy. I'm going to have to dig these stamps out of my parents' basement and compare them - are the pictures exact, or only based off on another?

This issue is pretty much taking up my whole brain right now. The book itself is a bit moralistic for me.

Title: Beatrice's Goat
Author: Page McBrier
Genre: picture book
Catalog: fic / PZ
Acquisition: 3 hours ago

Beatrice lives in Uganda and really wants to go to school. Her family gets a goat through Heifer International and sells the milk and kids. Based on a true story. Good book, cute illustrations.

The "Scientists in the Field" series looks fascinating. Do you know who produces/publishes them?

48alsvidur
Bewerkt: jan 29, 2014, 7:55 pm

I can't get over how every book in the series is good. Some are better than others, but a bunch of them knock it out of the park. They're so cool! The book design and photos are awesome as well. I'm reading one right now about tree kangaroos in New Guinea. Not only does it cover the animal, the science, vocational advice, the habitat, and conservation, but it also covers the lifestyle of the people who live around the species.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishes them as "Scientists in the Field". They are releasing some of them in paperback now, as well as continuing to publish new books. The series even has a website at the aptly named ScienceMeetsAdventure.com.

Amber, I'm super excited to get started on the haul from that sale. I can't decide what to read first!

There's no goals this year though, Paul. If I feel like reading, I will. If I go a month or so without, that's OK too. I want to enjoy each book I read the whole way through and not go from finishing one book to starting another in 20 seconds. Between that and not spending much money buying new books, I'm actually trying to read less this year. :)

Title: The Woods Scientist

Title: Jessica Darling's It List: The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness, and Perfection
Author: Megan McCafferty
Genre: middle grades fiction
Catalog: 813 / PZ
Acquisition: library

Prequel to the great YA series Jessica Darling. Jessica is starting 7th grade, her best friend has turned pretty overnight, and her older sister gave her a list of things she had to do in order not to let the family down - including joining the cheer team. Easy, right? This is the first book in the prequel series, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest. You can breeze through them. Recommended for fans of Jessica Darling already, although it was pretty funny on its own.

Title: Angels of Mercy: The Army Nurses of World War II
Author: Betsy Kuhn
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

Follows a few nurses throughout the war - from Africa into Italy, from Australia to POW camp in the Philippines, etc. Nice work.

Title: Imprisoned: The Betrayal of Japanese Americans During World War II
Author: Martin Sandler
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

Although the design was wonderful, I think this book looks bigger than it is. There are lots of photos, wide line spacing and margins, and huge sidebars. While there were some things that modern general WWII books don't mention, most of the info can be found in less specific books. The coverage of the reparation process was the only thing most other books don't spend time on. Beautiful photos.

Title: Franklin and Winston: A Christmas That Changed the World
Author: Douglas Wood
Genre: children's picture book
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

I was taken in by the cover illustration. I'm not sure the book lived up to it. There was not much of a plot or even an arc from beginning to end, just Winston visiting Franklin at Christmas 1941. Details of his visit were the focus, not details of their plans for the war.

Title: Hide-and-Seek Camouflage
Author: Emma Stevenson
Genre: children's picture book
Catalog: 591 / QL
Acquisition: library - ILL

A 2-page spread animal habitat painting has a bunch of animals in it. Can you find all 43? (or 35? etc) The next 2-page spread has a numbered count, and a sentence or two about each animal depicted. I usually love Stevenson's paintings, but some of the animals still need a little work.

Title: Owen and Mzee: The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship
Author: Craig Hatkoff
Genre: children's picture book
Catalog: 599 / QL
Acquisition: library

Owen the baby hippo was displaced from his pod when a typhoon came through. He was moved to an animal sanctuary nearby where he started to follow a huge, old, cranky tortoise around. The hippo and tortoise became friends. Told through photos. Not as sappy or bad as I had anticipated, actually nicely done.

Title: Bill Nye the Science Guy's Big Blue Ocean
Author: Bill Nye
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 551 / QC
Acquisition: library

Much of Bill Nye's episodes on oceans are written about here - same experiments (plus some), same science terms, etc. The book has the same feel as the show, with energetic sidebars and illustrations. This is a good thing. (By the way, watching those episodes from 1993 was great blast from the past.)

Title: Penguin Parade

Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 598 / QL

Title: A Visual Introduction to Penguins
Author: Bernard Stonehouse
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 598 / QL
Acquisition: library

Mostly paintings instead of photos. Loads of info, focuses on the different species. If you had to pick one of these books for use on a school report on penguins, this would be the one. Very useful for learning to differentiate between the species.

Title: The Nature of Penguins

I wanted something fun to read on Kyle's nook last night, so I was looking through the store and found the $2.99 section. I grabbed a book I had been eying and found what looked like a fun chick lit princess read. I am 1/4 of the way through Suddenly Royal and I've rolled my eyes so much that they're stuck like that. I *love* cliche and standard plots, but the prince seems like an ass who wants to get the heroine into bed as soon as they meet, and the writing is not the greatest. There is a lot of gasping: when she wakes up, when her feet touch the cold floor, when she's surprised, when she says something embarrassing, etc. I continue to read in hopes that it will get better, but how can I swoon when I think the prince is just going to pass on an STD and leave the heroine soon after?

Author: Karen Ruelle
Genre: children's picture book
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

The mosque in Paris was the center for a lot of Northern African Muslims, and the staff members helped shelter Jewish children during WWII. What's interesting is the different stories - there aren't many people left to tell them, and historically the cultures have relied more on verbal narratives than written. No one knows how many people were saved, especially since many of the kids weren't told what was going on. Beautiful artwork. Recommended!

Title: The Flag with Fifty-Six Stars: A Gift from from the Survivors of Mauthausen
Author: Susan Goldman Rubin
Genre: children's picture book
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

The Mauthausen camp was one of Hitler's Level 3 camps - no one comes out alive. The prisoners still had hope though, and eventually heard about the coming American liberation forces. They managed to secretly sew a flag from old sheets and fallen German flags. Since they didn't have any photos or reference, they made an extra row of stars on the flag. They presented the flag to an officer, and he flew it over the camp. The story idea was wonderful, but I think the book could have been written better.

Title: Yankee Doodle Gals: Women Pilots of World War II
Author: Amy Nathan
Genre: juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

Well done! Tells the story of the WASPs, the army's group of women pilots who mainly ferried aircraft around the country, but also did other flying as needed. Goes into the training and lifestyle. Lots of quotes and photos.

Selected in part because this week is Women of Aviation Week. Demo flights, open houses, and flight simulators around the country are free for girls and women! The following was taken from A Mighty Girl's facebook page:

"If your Mighty Girl has always dreamed of flying a plane, she might just have a chance this week! Women of Aviation Worldwide Week starts tomorrow and many events are being held around the world to encourage girls' interest in aviation, including many offering free discovery flights for girls and women. Over 30,000 girls and women are expected to participate in aviation events this week, most of which are taking place in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week is an annual, international week of awareness and outreach celebrating past, present, and future women of aviation. One of the goal's of the week is to encourage girls' interest in aviation and aviation careers. Currently, only 5% of the members of the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents pilots at major carriers in the US and Canada, are women, and only 6% of licensed pilots overall in the US and UK are women.

Events offered vary from location to location with most offering free discovery flights or the opportunity to try out a flight stimulator, while a few sites charge participation fees. To learn about events in your area, check out this interactive map that the Institute for Women for Women of Aviation Worldwide has created in conjunction with PlaneFinder (the red pegs are planned events while the blue planes represent current flights): http://woawevents.planefinder.net/

Title: Shatter Me

Genre: YA dystopic
Catalog: 813 /

Holy smokes, you guys!

Given that the narrator has been locked in a mental ward for umpteen years, the writing (run-on sentences, phrases crossed out, Arabic numerals, etc) took about 1/4 of the book to get used to, but then it really took off. So the narrator, Juliette, was locked up because she accidentally killed a little boy - by touching him. Yep, anyone she touches she kills. One of the points of the book is that touch can be more necessary than food and water to survive. I immediately got the novella that goes between this book and #2 in the series, and went to a neighboring town's library for #2.

Oh, that's really cool! Do trainers work with them at all as part of their enrichment, or do they stop learning different things and 'retire'? (Edit: I'm a bit loopy right now and am having problems with coherency. I know the sea lions won't be trained Navy tasks, but I meant other things.) Also, is the National Zoo where most of them retire?

Title: Cher Ami: WWI Homing Pigeon
Author: Robin McKinley
Genre: Graphic novel, juvenile non-fiction
Catalog: 940 / D
Acquisition: library

Oh, dear. No. The story of WWI and the lost battalion is not told very well, the illustrations are 'eh', and it's just... no. Cher Ami deserves better. The only good thing is that it went into what happened to Cher Ami on his flight - the lost eye, limb, and bullet hole in the chest - and how he was put back to rights, including an artificial limb (wow for 1919, huh?), and how he went on tour afterwards. Most books don't cover the aftermath.

89cbl_tn

Your time spent reading Cher Ami wasn't totally wasted. I wasn't familiar with that story so I went to Wikipedia to find out a little more! Fascinating. Now I want to read more about the Lost Battalion for my WWI reading.

>87 alsvidur: Only one of the 6-ish sea lions is ex-Navy so I don't think that's where all of them go to retire. I would guess it would be somewhere on the West Coast, since the Pacific has a larger US Navy presence than the Atlantic.
The keepers do training and enrichment with all of them but it's mostly limited to health and safety behaviors. They can be instructed to go to a particular part of the pool, get their teeth examined, roll over, etc. They will also fetch things from the pool (usually floating things, not sinking things). I don't know how many of those are Navy behaviors, but the zoo is very careful about all their enrichment being purposeful and not just entertainment for the visitors.

Title: Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell: A True Story of Violence, Corruption, and the Soul of Surfing
Author: Chas Smith
Genre: Non-fiction, memoir-ish
Catalog: 797 / GV
Acquisition: library - ILL

A personal narrative about the toughness of the North Shore's surf scene. Not tough like hard to compete, but tough like gangs, drugs, and beatings. Sometimes it veers off path and into the author's personal life a bit too much to stay on track. He mentions his clothes a lot. And he can be pretty cruel. "I have unwarranted belief in my own charm." At least the author is aware of his issues.

Aside from that quibble, Smith can actually write well. And while he's not the kind of guy I would become besties with, he sounds interesting enough that I wouldn't mind meeting him. And again, he can really write. I just wish he would write about something other than himself.

Billy loves horses very much. When his father buys him a pony for a birthday present, Billy and Blaze go on many adventures together: jumping over a log, saving a dog, and going to a horse show. Holy cow. I've been doing so great on not concerning myself with logging my reading on time or hopping from one book to the next that I completely forgot to log a book! I only noticed on the monthly tally that the last book in the series wasn't mentioned. Go me! :)

Also, I'm proud of myself for remembering how to make graphs on MS Excel. I haven't had to do that since high school, and MS Office has changed a lot since then. I wish I could paste the graph here, because it's a colored graph of how many books I've read by month, each year since I joined LT. Am I weird for getting geeked out over this? Probably.

OK, series and movie are done. Loved the movie! Perfect ending to the series.

The problem with good tv shows and book series is what to do when they end. I'm adrift. There's no VMars show to look forward to watching once a week. It's all gone! :( I do have to say, I haven't seen a tv show as good as that one in a really super long time. I guess it's on to the books now, but I'll miss the actors' voices and the theme song music, which happens to be my SO's earworm for the past week. (I have my own Piz!, who only understood my passion for the Logan-Veronica relationship after several discussions.)

Sigh.... Now what to read, what to read....? The final Daughter of Smoke and Bone book? The newest Bridget Jones? Maybe The Selection's sequel, The Elite? Or Hyperbole and a Half? More Fables? A new series, like the Goddess Test or Ruined/Unbroken? So many choices, and they all pale next to watching Veronica. I can't believe I actually asked for the day off to finish watching the series today. I've asked for about 3 days off in the past 2+ years, and all of those times were weddings, so this is pretty big for me.

There needs to be a support group for new fans.

Title: Gigi and Her Girl
Author: Kathy Brandt
Genre: Children's picture
Catalog: 813 / PZ
Acquisition: 2 days ago

Early Reviewers.

Gigi the Cavalier isn't sure she likes how her young girl owner treats her - taking her on slides and trampolines, dressing her up, and squeezing her tightly. When Gigi starts preferring to spend her time with the more considerate older sister, the young girl tries to play more conscientiously.

The illustrations are different enough from more children's books to make it stand out. The story is told through alternating points of view - Gigi is in black text and her owner is in pink. I'm not sure if that's enough distinction for little kids learning to read by themselves, but it was fine for reading aloud. It's not a terribly original way to deal with the concept of teaching kindness to animals, but it's effective.

Rebecca is taken in by her elderly aunts to get an education and proper upbringing. I was looking forward to watching the movie that I've never seen, but the IMDB description is absolutely nothing like the book. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, but it seemed to fit the story alright.

Title: The Horse in War
Author: Bill Felber
Genre: J non-fiction
Catalog: 357 / UE
Acquisition: library - ILL

Felber picks and chooses what topics he wants to cover - this is not an all-encompassing history of the horse in war. The author focuses on cavalry charges, generals of the Civil War, and the Indian Wars of the late 1800s. The names and dates seem of more concern than the horses themselves. Not particularly recommended, but it wasn't a bad book.

Title: The First Four Years
Author: Laura Ingalls Wilder
Genre: juvenile fiction
Catalog: 813 / PZ
Acquisition: library

Confession: I never read The Little House books before. At the age when everyone else was loving them, I was obsessed with horses. If the book didn't feature a horse, I wasn't reading it. My coworkers were aghast. I felt so ashamed that I finally got around to reading the series. I'm glad I did.

When Farmer Boy abruptly switched families, I was at first miffed that I would have to wait to see what happened to the Ingalls family, but I ended up enjoying reading about Manzo more. I wasn't terribly impressed with Manzo's courtship of Laura in These Happy Golden Years though. Laura seemed pretty passionless, but maybe she was just keeping it out of the stories. I wish I hadn't read The First Four Years - since it was only a first draft that was published, it lacked a lot of details that the other stories specialized in. It was also a bit depressing; there weren't as many happy stories to lighten the overwhelming downtrodden feeling of the book.

Genre: children's picture non-fiction
Catalog: 590 / QL

The pages flip in the one. The left page has a poem with hints at what the hidden animal might be. The right side is a picture with an animal camouflaged. Flip the right page open and the animal is highlighted and information about the animal is presented. This would be a fun one to look at with kids! Won the ABS award.

Title: What in the Wild? Mysteries of Nature Concealed...and Revealed
Author: David Schwartz
Genre: children's picture non-fiction
Catalog: 508 / QL

The pages flip in the one. The left page has a poem with hints at what the hidden item might be. The right side is a picture. Flip the right page open and there is a big picture showing what the item is and information on the system. Eg worm castings, owl pellets, spittlebug nest. Not as good as 'where in the wild', but more variety is presented.

Kids talk about their life on farms. Each book goes over the basics of their animal, birthing and young animal life, and the work the kids do on the farm. Each book goes into some detail that many other animal books leave out. The kids describe how much work it is (which many other animal books leave out) but also how much they love their animals. Life on a Farm series seems to be a winner overall.

Title: Veterinary Instruments and Equipment: A Pocket Guide

Flashcard-like photos and short descriptions of tools used in veterinary medicine. Isla's had a crush on Josh for years. They finally start dating, but isn't that when the hard part starts? 'Isla' seemed a bit more real than 'Anna' or 'Lola' - not quite so much fluff in this one. Still excellent!

I got annoyed with the third book in the Hush Hush series and never made it through the whole series.

172alsvidur
sep 12, 2014, 12:39 am

You didn't miss much. I kept reading just to know what happened at the end. I didn't really give a darn about the characters. The plot had so much potential, but I think it needed a different writer to take it in another direction. I put the book down so frequently that even my SO noticed and thought it must not be that good. I can't bad mouth it too much though, because I did keep reading until the end.

I'm trying to summarize the plot without looking at the books themselves, and I can't even remember the heroine's name. Anyways, she falls for a bad boy fallen angel named Patch. There's war between the fallen angels, archangels, and nephilim. Mostly what sticks with me is the fallen angel wing scars, feather saving, and how much I'm over bad boys.

And going on the the Lux series, now THERE'S a series I can get behind! I'm SO not a sci fi/alien person, but there are so many neat elements to the story. And I have to go, so I'm going to save my raving about the series until later!

Continuing the Outlander series, Claire and Jamie go to France. Their goal is to stop the Jacobite rebellion so their friends and family don't die on the battlefield of Cullidon; to do this, they have to persuade Prince Charles that it would be a lost cause.

While I wasn't a fan of the court intrigues, the book picked up again halfway through. And the ending.... nothing like building a love story up for 2,000 pages only to rip it up in less than 20. 'It" being both the love story and my heart.

Title: Voyager
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Genre: Adult fiction
Catalog: 813 / PS
Acquisition: 1 week ago

Outlander series book #3. After being apart from Jamie for 20 years, Claire still can't forget him. A family friend informs her that Jamie survived the Battle of Cullodon, and she has to decide if she should leave her grown daughter in the 1960s and travel back in time again to be with Jamie once more. (Of course the answer is yes.) She meets Jamie suspiciously easily, but they get into their usual troubles later in the book - sailing from Scotland to the Caribbean to rescue their kidnapped nephew, for one. The flashbacks revealing how they both spent the past 20 years are full of surprises.

Claire and Jamie's relationship is less about the romance now and more about being true partners. It grew up with the characters. The villains are sufficiently villainous and heroes are, well, Jamie Fraser.

Title: Drums of Autumn
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Genre: Adult fiction
Catalog: 813 / PS
Acquisition: 3 weeks ago

Outlander #4. Jaime and Claire set out to North Carolina to make a homestead in the 1760s. They meet Aunt Jocosta, who offers them her plantation. They have to avoid the British army, who looks unkindly on the illegal making of alcohol - they want the taxes on all alcohol above ale. Meanwhile, Claire's daughter Bree finds proof that Jaime and Claire die in a fire in the 1770s. She goes back in time to tell them, but encounters her own troubles on the way. Roger, her love, follows her back in time, but screws things up for the couple.

This installment is a bit heavier on the historical fiction, and less on the romance. That's actually OK, but I miss the love. I don't dislike Bree anymore. She's a heroine in her own right. The surprise in the middle of the book takes up the rest of the story - don't try to stay awake for the resolving of that problem, thinking it's just another chapter-long adventure for Bree. Nope. It'll take you *all* through night to get to the end of that one. You'll be tired at work the next day. Trust me.

The semi-fictionalized story of young Princess Haya, an Olympic equestrian and president of the FEI (the world governing organization of horse sports), is meant for younger readers than other pony books - maybe 7-10yos. Haya's mother died when she was 6-years-old, and Haya's father gave her an orphaned foal to raise and break. A nostalgic edition - not the most perfectly illustrated, but it'll certainly do.

Catalog: 813 / PZ
Acquisition: 1 week ago

A series of historical fiction books with horses telling the story. Each book focuses on a different time and place. Jingle Bells is a Clydesdale in Wisconsin in 1915 - when cars are becoming more common and replacing horses. Jingle's family comes home with a new Model T, but they still need Jingle when the snow comes down.

Photos and quotes from Life magazine in the early 1940s. Most of the photos have been reproduced in other books, but it was nice to see them large and clear.

Title: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride
Author: Cary Elwes
Genre: Memoir
Catalog: 791 / PN
Acquisition: 1 day ago

Elwes talks about his time with The Princess Bride - the cast, the process, and some tales. It wasn't very meaty, but was still very fun. (I doubt many people reading the book would not have seen the movie, so there were some descriptive scenes that might have been edited out - with some more details put in their place instead.) Fun, fluffy, and nostalgic.

Title: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Author: CS Lewis
Genre: Juvenile fiction
Catalog: 823 / PN
Acquisition: 2 days ago

I last read this one as a child. I remember that I didn't particularly like bits of it - it seemed complicated and long then. Now, it seems short, over-simplistic, and violently clubbing you over the head with the allegory. I will likely go through the whole series though.

Title: Manger
Author: Lee Bennett Hopkins
Genre: Children's poetry
Catalog: 811 / PS
Acquisition: 4 months ago

Hopkins has collected poems told about the Nativity from the view of various animals. Manger would make a wonderful read-aloud book during December. The illustrations are lovely, bright and expressive. The artwork alone makes the book worth it. The species chosen are all inclusive - no matter if they existed in the Middle East then or would be found near the stable, they are welcomed here. Like all poetry collections, some individual poems are more on-point than others, and some authors perhaps haven't even met a member of the species they are writing as. That bit aside, it's a very nice collection for the holidays.

Title: Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins
Author: Eric Kimmel
Genre: Children's picture book
Catalog: 244 / PZ
Acquisition: reread

Hershel comes across a town that is plagued by goblins. The goblins don't allow anyone to light menorahs or celebrate Hanukkah. He offers to break the curse, but to do so, he must stay in the haunted synagogue and light the candles every night. On the last night, the goblin king must light the menorah himself. The witty Hershel solves the problem by tricking each goblin in turn.

This is one of my favorite holiday stories. Trina Schart Hyman did the wonderful illustrations.

Title: The Spotted Pony: A Collection of Hanukkah Stories

Catalog: 244 / PZ

Eight nights of stories are provided. Each is started with a shorter tale so there are 16 enthralling adventures in all. Lovely stories.

Title: Smile
Author: Raina Telgemeier
Genre: Graphic novel
Catalog: 617 / RK
Acquisition: 6 days ago

Graphic novel. A girl grows through middle school and high school with the usual problems, along with massive dental work. Since it was based on the author's life, the timing for fads was terrific - Joey McIntyre of the New Kids printed on a girl's retainer?!? So jealous!!! Little Mermaid, Teen Spirit, bands on molars, and lots of other little things will probably slip by the intended audience, but even as an adult, the book smoothed over some of my old fears about my braces. (I fainted when I got mine on.) Loved this book and will recommend.
