The Economist's other magazine, Intelligent Life , published bimonthly carries a cartographic article of u usual maps in each issue.. Labelled Cartophilia . the current issue ( Jan / Feb 2014) has a piece on Al Capone's Chicago complete with Map of Chicago , gangland perspective . the magazine can be bought (€8.60 to 9) in Euroean countries or can be downloaded for free for IPad or IPhone . A good read all around and I should add that I have no connection whatsoever with this magazine.

I'm betting that the map referred to above is Bruce Roberts' 1931 tongue-in-cheek map 'A map of Chicago's gangland from authentic sources, designed to inculcate the most important principals of piety and virtue in young persons, and graphically portray the evils and sin of large cities' --- A kinda long winded title.

It's available from the Newberry Library's Poster Sale Section in Chicago.

I tried to see the article on Intelligent Life's Cartophiia section, but it isn't yet available, probably because it's the most recent issue. Apparently, Intelligent Life would like to sell magazines; the nerve! The older Cartophilia articles are interesting and available.

If you would like to manipulate or enlarge sections of the map online, you can do so at the University of Illinois' Library site.
