Around 1970 I received a new copy of Christmas Horse as a present. That book is long gone, but the cover is still in my memory, and I've been trying to find a picture of it, it online.
It had the young man riding his horse, and I think there were cattle around him. It is not the cover here on LT, of the boy dismounting.
not this one
Any thoughts on how to find this?

Could it have been this one? http://www.limberlostpress.com/authors/156-balch.html

There are 28 LT members who have this book, and possibly one has the cover you are looking for but has not uploaded the image. I don't know of any easy way to ask them, though, other than messaging each member.
It might take a while, but you might check on eBay now and then to see if anyone has an older copy, with cover photo, on auction.

There are a slew on Abebooks without covers showing. It's a long shot, but you might try emailing the sellers and asking about those covers.

Are you in the US? Apparently the Boise State University have all the authors' papers - you could try contacting their Special Collections department.

Also - and no offense intended - but is it possible you are confusing the Christmas Horse cover with one of the other books in the Tack Ranch series? Wild Horse Tamer has a cover with Ben riding his horse in a cattle yard which sounds similar to what you describe.

Thanks, skullduggery. No offense taken. The Christmas Horse was the only Tack Ranch book I had for years. I read the others as an adult. I can still see the cover in my mind, so I'm 99.9% sure of it.
That is a nifty site, and I thank you for sharing it. :)

>8 bookel: no, it's weird, I can see the cover very clearly, but I cannot find the image anywhere. :(

According to worldcat.org there's two editions at that time in 1970... The Scholastic (yellow) and Crowell (orange hardcover) editions. So unless there's an internal illustration that matches... Could you possibly be thinking of a different book?
11fuzzi
Not a different book, no, I am very certain of that.
What's interesting is that the covers shown don't seem familiar at all.
I was given the book about 1970.

No. Those are all the editions that WorldCat knows about and has 'combined'.

Worldcat.org lists editions recorded by libraries. Trying Google Books now for other information.

Zoomed in I think the first is an Apollo edition.
The second has an ISBN. Searching Google Books for the quote, since the image is blurred.
"Christmas Horse. Glenn Batch, (lllus.) (gr 7 up). 1970. pap. 0.95 (J512). Apollo Eds"
That's the first one.
"Christmas Horse. Glenn Balch (lllus.). 4.00 (ISBN 0-8446-0019-9) Peter Smith."
That's the second one. The ISBN isn't of much help though as I am not finding anything on it. ... searching ... okay, except this, which is "(ISBN 0-8446-0019-9). Peter Smith Publisher. Inc." So Peter Smith is a publisher.
Was yours a paperback or hardcover, fuzzi? I think Apollo editions are paperback (since I own Wild Horse by Glenn Balch as a paperback. Apollo Editions are from Thomas Y. Crowell Company, who also did the original hardcover.
The Publishers' Trade List Annual - Volume 7 - Page 23
1973 - Snippet view
BALCH, GLENN: Christmas Horse; illus. 0019-9 $3.75.
That's from 1973. The numbers probably refers to the matching end of the above ISBN.
ISBN 0844600199 edition published by Peter Smith could be the edition you're after, but it could have been published with only a limited number of copies.

Top row, in the middle, the 1970 Apollo Edition of Christmas Horse by Glenn Balch. That fits what you describe, fuzzi. Now I'm thinking it's the Apollo paperback edition you're after.

And this should be the Apollo edition listing on worldcat since it says 1970. It said 1949 in brief display probably because that was the year next to the copyright logo/word, which would take precedence I think, in the record.

Persistence and extra searching and luckily there was one cover online. Several Glenn Balch books were released in Apollo paperback editions and they do have different covers. It's common not to find all edition covers online.

Well done bookel!
23MarthaJeanne
I see it.

maybe it's still in your cache? It's an ebay image looking at the url, I'm getting a replacement image.

>22 JerryMmm: I uploaded the image to the TBSL gallery. I'm on my iPad, so I can't snag the url to post it in this thread.

BTW, if ANY of you come across this book for sale, let me know. I'd like the Apollo edition again, if it's not too expensive.

>29 fuzzi: found it on Ebay, and it's come home!!!
My scanner is not working, or I'd upload a better image (this one was taken by my iPad).
