Fuzzi, you will love Dewey! I read it years ago and count it among my fave animal books.

She jumped up on the hood of my car...I'd just gotten home from work, and wasn't fast enough getting her dinner.
And she's a feral...
And she's a feral...
13fuzzi
She does, Helcura. And you know, I never noticed it until I took that picture. Being a feral, we've not had opportunities to look at each other that closely before. This time, there was a windshield between us, so she must have felt safer.
14Pebblesgmc
Fuzzi did someone trap her and get her spayed?
her ear is notched.
They mark feral cats that way in my area.

15fuzzi
(14) Yes, Pebblesgmc, I did the trapping and brought her (and the rest of her two litters!) to the local spay clinic. The procedure is referred to here as TNR, "trap and return". Once the cats are neutered and cannot reproduce, the level of kittens in any area goes way down...the neutered ferals keep the non-neutered out of the neighborhood. It works.
Addendum: here is a 2009 photo of "Momma Cat" (on the left) and six of her eight offspring:
Not shown is one kitten that died young, and the other who is still around, "Mittsie". All the ones in this picture have died or disappeared (probably died). The attrition is horrible, so I keep my own cats inside.
(left to right: Momma Cat, Mouse, Priscilla, Fraidy, Watson, Yang and Ying)
Addendum #2: Here is Mittsie (yes, it's spelled that way!):

I did TNR in my old neighborhood, I have to find out how owns which cats here before I start doing that here.
I had 1 semi-feral cat live to 23, I called her Yipes-Stripes she has the same color as Momma cat. She was friendliest at milking time. I had goats and gave the first bit of milk to the kitties.
Momma family are beautful.

This is definitely an overload of cute grey kittens. Some of them seem to have very smushed faces.

I went to my friend who breeds snowshoe cats' house yesterday & took a few pics, havent gone through them all properly yet, but I saw this one & love it so much I have to share :)

You have reminded me that I once started a thread on the #37+ species of wild cats. I think I had posted about 17 or so. Must do more. It's always difficult if you don't get any feedback, to keep going. And over the last few years, species have been split & discovered!
Guido.
Just found this
Please tell me if I should do some more?

OK, I've added the "Marbled Cat" to the list (see #52) and have now found out there is a Borneo Marbled Cat, I knew by another name :-).
I'm still not sure how I should handle Tigers (yes I hear you, very carefully... *grin*) I mean, should I have an entry for each of the major sub-species? The Sumatran and Siberian Tigers are quite different!
And Should I add a link to that thread to each of my updates?
Enjoy,
Guido.
ETA. I am using Wild cats of the world as my primary source, but even this great book, published in 2002, is getting a bit dated. Any later suggestions are very welcome.

Well Robert, after having looked at This List of Tiger sub-species, 3 extinct I will probably add some of the major Tiger sub species, to my list :-)

Extinct is such a very sad word.
Cougars are making a comeback in my area, the drought is causing them to come into the community.
The deer come after water and the things planted in yards. The cats come after the deer.
I have not heard about any pets being hurt yet, the possibility is there.
My own cat is only outside on leash and under my watchful eye.

Jaguars! I love Jaguars, I know all cats are special & all big cats are amazing, but there's something extra special about Jaguar's - so here's a Jaguar Fix :)
65Seanie
The vegetarian & pacifist in me doesn't usually like to see the hunting side of big cats - I do know that they need to hunt to survive & its just a part of nature, but usually I avoid watching that sort of thing - however that video is amazing fuzzi! It really shows the power of the jaguar! So much a forgotten big cat IMO, everyone talks about lions, tigers, cheetahs & leopards when they talk big cats, but I think the Jaguar can be so much more impressive!
66Helcura
Jaguars are called el tigre in most Latin American countries, so I think sometimes people confuse them. I love them too
67fuzzi
I believe the Jaguar is the largest (heaviest) of the big cats. I suppose I could Google to confirm...
Seanie, I don't like graphic videos of killing, and I'm not even a vegetarian. However, I thought that was a fantastic video of the skill of this particular jaguar.
Here's a great video of the big cats, and it isn't graphic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIeQw163otQ
And I especially love the Cheetah bit... ;)

#67, fuzzi,
I believe the Jaguar is the largest (heaviest) of the big cats.
Not so. The Siberian Tiger is the heaviest, one old male in a zoo was 260Kg.
The Jaguar has no typical weight. It depends where it comes from and can vary from 40 Kg. to 100 Kg.

(72) She's up for adoption, anna...if you're close to NC, USA.
Can you believe she was a STRAY???
Can you believe she was a STRAY???
74anna_in_pdx
*sigh* I am not close to NC at all, as you can probably guess I am in Portland, OR.
We went to the Humane Society this weekend and looked at all the dogs and cats and as usual and I wanted them all but oh well. We have two cats at home since my beloved Belle died last August and I am really wanting to adopt another one and/or a dog but my partner has put the kibosh on that.

Also please sent positive thoughts to my mom who has two beautiful flame point siamese kitties named Maya and Tina who have been with her since they were 1 year old (littermates) - they are now 11 yrs old and Maya has kidney failure and has to have fluids injected into her scruff on a regular basis for the rest of her life which probably will be another few months at most. Mom is heartbroken.

Lynx tracks - spotted while out skiing this afternoon:

When I can use my laptop again (it's not recognizing being plugged in - long story) I'll have another picture of the Campus Cats. Turns out there are four of them. Explains why I wouldn't have been able to describe Splotchy's markings: there are two different splotchy cats and this is the first time I've seen them both at once.

What a wonderful picture! We have bobcats in my neck of the woods (western New York), and I'm still hoping to see one in the wild, but they are pretty elusive and sightings are rare. I love all cats, wild and domestic, but there's something about those ear tufts on the lynx and bobcats that make them so majestic and gorgeous.

That is a great pic NorthernStar! I wish I lived somewhere there was a chance to spot wild animals (apart from possums & birds), especially big cats!
Here's my Taji boy recovering from a hard day :)
He’s such a wuss, spent 4 hours being terrified because my dad was here using power tools, then my mum kept turning the vacuum on to clean up the dust from dad’s drilling to make things worse. He didn’t even come out at lunch time when the tools were quiet for an hour or so & he usually comes out for mum & especially when mum’s got food! Tilly came out to check out what was happening & even sniffed at my dad’s hand when he reached towards her – then gave her pats & chatted to her for a minute, very cute from someone who ‘doesn’t like cats’ lol :) So I brought Taji out too, but he started struggling in my arms as soon as he saw dad, I made him a nest under the blankets & a pillow on my bed, then mum & I sat on the bed patting him through the blanket while dad finished the noisy work. Once dad finished I tried to bring Taji out to say goodbye, but apparently my dad is absolutely terrifying coz Taji bolted to the study & didn’t come out til mum & dad had been gone over an hour :(
Once he did come out, he spent half an hour scent marking every doorway & wall as he followed me from room to room, but didn’t want to be picked up, til he decided to jump into my arms & for the last hour or so he hasn't wanted to be out of them - he really is such a sooky love bug *melt*

>100 Pebblesgmc: sky tracks? I think the cat just dragged its feet a bit. Here is another shot of the same tracks.
Here you can see that there are actually two sets of tracks overlapping in the lower right, with one set going up in the shadows on the right side, and the other (the ones in the first photo) going up to the left.
There was about 1-2 cm fresh snow on top of a fairly good crust, which I think is why the tracks are so clear.
The trees are black spruce and a spindly small birch - this is a spruce bog. There were also lots of rabbit tracks around (favourite lynx food) and squirrel tracks, but not in the picture.
