Looking for folks who want to meet-up in Portland, OR in June.

2maggie1944
Bewerkt: feb 17, 2014, 4:15 pm

Yes, I do. I think right after school is out, perhaps. Then those who are connected to schools might have a better chance of being able to join us.

ETA: I dropped a star on this thread so I can revisit it often.

Of course, it will depend on how things unfold, but I'm starring this thread and would very much love to join in the fun! Thanks for setting us up, Carol!

Will depend on the final date and what happens to our calendar between now and then but I'm definitely interested.

I'm very interested. I had such a great time at the last one.

Karen, it looks like we are going to have a good group again for this meet-up!

7maggie1944
feb 18, 2014, 7:02 am

Yes! Let's continue to bump this thread up so we can attract whoever might be close to Portland or willing to travel.

I very much enjoyed the place where we had beers and lunch but am wondering if there is another place near that we could try out? Do regular Portland folks have any suggestions?

8benitastrnad
feb 18, 2014, 10:35 am

I am not planning on attending the meet-up but I have starred the thread. Does that mean that I am bumping it up?

9maggie1944
feb 18, 2014, 1:39 pm

Whenever someone posts a message it bumps it up. When we just let it sit without any new messages it tends to slip down into the deep of unloved threads.

Has anyone ate at The Parish? It is right by Deschutes where we ate last time and has a southern menu, Happy Hour is 3-6 every day. It looks really good but I have no personal experience with it.

11maggie1944
feb 18, 2014, 2:17 pm

Southern food sounds good.

12EBT1002
feb 22, 2014, 7:05 pm

I've never eaten there but I agree with Karen that it sounds good!

13Arctic-Stranger
feb 22, 2014, 8:59 pm

Sounds good to me. Last time I was there I ate at Zeus Cafe, which is a VERY interesting place to eat!

14CarolO
mrt 8, 2014, 5:28 pm

*bump*

I had a reason to be in the Pearl District this past week so we went to the Parish for dinner, food was good but didn't seem to be an easy place to just walk in without a reservation so maybe this is not a good option for our next meet up.

I haven't been to the Zeus Café but it is part of the McMenamins so I am sure that it is good.

15maggie1944
mrt 8, 2014, 8:43 pm

Thanks for bumping it up!

We are having a small meet-up with Joe and his wife in Seattle on Monday. Keeping my skills sharp I actually printed out my wish list.

16sandragon
mrt 8, 2014, 10:02 pm

Is there a date set for the summer meet-up?

17CarolO
mrt 9, 2014, 4:46 am

Nothing more specific than June but feel free to add input about what dates would work for you to help us narrow it down. It would be great if you could join us!

18maggie1944
mrt 9, 2014, 9:20 am

That would be so cool if you could come, sandragon! I would love to see you.

19sandragon
mrt 10, 2014, 12:22 pm

I would love to see you guys again, but I'm not sure of my schedule. I figure if I know when the meet-up'll be, I can keep it in mind and come out if I'm able. Although, if you were to press me, the weekends around June 7 or June 21 look promising.

I've already put the bug in my husband's ear, so if I should disappear some time in June, he'll know where to find me :)

20maggie1944
mrt 10, 2014, 12:50 pm

Later in June would work best for me as I've made plans to be out of town twice in May, once early, once in the middle.

21CarolO
mrt 10, 2014, 5:45 pm

I can't commit this far in advance but so far the 21st looks good for me too.

Karen, the 75er's are kind of quiet on this thread, do you know what dates work for most of them?

22maggie1944
mrt 11, 2014, 12:42 pm

Nope, but I'll put up another link to this thread and see what I can stimulate.

23EBT1002
mrt 13, 2014, 10:36 am

June 21 is a possibility. Like Carol, I can't really commit this far in advance but that is usually a decent time for me to get away for a day or two. I'll try to convince P to join me this time.

24SuziQoregon
mrt 13, 2014, 5:05 pm

As of right now - June 21 works for me. The Hubster has a race that evening so it's unlikely we'll have something else on the calendar.

25maggie1944

I might be....except that is a Saturday and I have to preach on Sunday. What time?

43CarolO
jun 5, 2014, 12:19 am

I don't think we have gotten that specific yet >42 Arctic-Stranger:, why don't you suggest a time?

I don't think we even have a meetup spot yet...I'm just assuming that we will end up at Powell's again...so probably something in that vicinity.

44sandragon
jun 5, 2014, 12:32 am

I'm sorry to say, I'm not going to be able to make it. I would've loved to be able to meet-up and go to Powells as well, but my youngest's birthday party got planned for the Sunday. I thought we could do it the weekend before, but someone else scheduled a Father's Day BBQ. I hope everyone enjoys themselves, and I'll try to make the next one.

45maggie1944
jun 5, 2014, 1:25 pm

Aha! Found you. I'd lost track of this thread.

I am good to go to Portland from the Seattle area on either Saturday, the 21st, or Sunday, the 22nd. I'll need to be back to Seattle Sunday evening for a basketball game at 6 pm but I see no reason why that would keep me from a Library Thing Meet-up!

46Berly
jun 5, 2014, 1:28 pm

I am still good for Sat 6/21 or Sun 6/22. I will probably still be on crutches, so let's make the eating place close to Powell's. Please?! : )

47maggie1944
jun 5, 2014, 3:11 pm

Any one know of a hotel near Powell's?

48CarolO
jun 5, 2014, 5:05 pm

From my quick look at Google Maps - Mark Spencer Hotel, Ace Hotel, The Benson, and Hotel Vintage Plaza look like they are within 2-6 blocks.

I don't know anything about the hotels or neighborhood or pet policy.

I really like the Northrup Station. On the Max line so easy to get to Powell's. Mark Spencer and Benson are also very nice.

I haven't made any reservations, but I think P and I are planning to make the trek!

jun 6, 2014, 8:56 am

Unfortunately, the Portland weekend is when my brother and his wife have chosen to come into town. I'd blow them off, but we'll be scattering Dad's ashes and it's important to Mom that we all be there.

Right now I am angry over family situations, and if I write more I'll regret it. So I'll just say grrrrrrrr.

And I hope you all have a good time! My friend and I are rescheduling our Oregon trip for sometime in September. So maybe......

55maggie1944
jun 6, 2014, 11:13 am

September.... sounds good, but I also think Seattle's turn for hosting must be next.... or maybe after next?

56streamsong
Bewerkt: jun 6, 2014, 11:22 am

My friend is looking at a specific retirement community south of Portland a few hours, so that trip revolves mostly around her plans. But other trips are also possible.

I love Seattle and want to get back to see more of it. I was hoping to get tickets for Wicked in Seattle this fall, but it looks like they've cancelled those dates. :-(

Any news on when and where Paul might or might not be visiting?

57banjo123
jun 6, 2014, 2:13 pm

I am still on for the 21st! Actually I could do either Saturday or Sunday, but Saturday seems better. I have a volunteer gig in the morning, but will be free by 12:30 or 1 PM. Maybe we could just meet at the coffee shop in Powell's, so less walking for Kim, and then do a meal somewhere close? I'd be up for the same brew-pub, since I missed it last time, and it seemed that everyone likes it.

streamsong, sorry you can't make it, but next time. I do think a Seattle meet-up would be fun sometime soon. I think that the Cranswick visit is October, but the dates seem still somewhat fluid.

58maggie1944
jun 16, 2014, 11:46 am

Ah.... I'm thinking I'm going to pass on this trip. I've spent a good deal of "blood and treasure" on fixing up this house I'm living in since February 1, and I need to start stuffing the mattress for the day when the Retirement Community calls me and says, "come on down". I am sorry. But maybe after I've beefed up the saving account some I can go back on the road.

59CarolO
jun 17, 2014, 2:38 pm

The enthusiasm level seems kind of low on this one...is anyone planning on attending? Should we just bump this out to September or October - to coincide with the above travel plans?

Things are getting hectic this weekend so it wouldn't bother me to wait until fall.

60EBT1002
jun 17, 2014, 5:40 pm

ARGH! I had every intention of attending and now I have to work this weekend. Rats.

I do apologize. Maybe fall would be a better option.

61SuziQoregon

I'm not going to be able to make it this weekend either. Will hope for better luck with a Fall get together.

62Berly

Still on crutches which makes standing around looking at books hard. Pass as well.

63banjo123

Sounds like the general consensus is to wait for fall. It's just as well--I still need to read the books I bought at our last outing!

Okay, folks. It's way early to start planning this but given how busy we all are, I figure it's never too early! Janet will be in the Portland area in June..... I'm thinking a Portland meet-up on June 17 or 18 (I think that is a Friday or Saturday) might work.

Anyone?

66maggie1944

I am completely flexible so those dates would be ok, as would others if we need to shift.

>65 EBT1002: Hey Ellen - I absolutely want to get to the next Oregon meetup, but it must be someone else who said they would be there in June. :-) June works well for me, though. I'm pretty flexible on dates.

ETA: Mystery solved! On my thread Lori thornton37814 says she will be in Portland June 13-16 for a genealogy meeting and plans to stay and sightsee a few days afterward.

68EBT1002
Bewerkt: jan 3, 2016, 7:27 pm

Uh oh, I'm getting my regional peeps confused. But I'm glad you solved the mystery!
This is why we need meet-ups (as if we needed a reason for meet-ups) --- I do better after I've met someone in person. I'm still notoriously bad at names but it does improve when I've sat in a room, strolled around a bookstore, and shared a meal with someone.

Kim has to check on her daughter's graduation date. Stay tuned.

69thornton37814
jan 3, 2016, 7:53 pm

>67 streamsong: It's actually a library meeting (Association of Christian Librarians). It's actually being held in Newberg at George Fox University. However I'm definitely planning to stay afterwards to sightsee in both Oregon and Washington. Carrie (cbl_tn) will also be there, but I'm not sure how quickly she'll have to get back home. It will be fun to meet all the LT Pacific Northwest contingent!

70cbl_tn

>69 thornton37814: Yes, I'll be there as well. I may have a friend traveling with me so it will depend on how quickly she needs to get back home. I think she's got a family wedding at the end of June.

71Berly
jan 3, 2016, 10:21 pm

Jess is in Cabo, so I have to wait until she gets back to check on the graduation date. I think it is June 13th, which would then be out for me...also Mark said he was headed this way to visit his niece this summer.

72EBT1002
jan 7, 2016, 1:05 am

Okay. The good thing is we have time to pull this together. And -- if we end up having two meet-ups, so be it. I'll check in with Mark and we'll wait until Jess gets back from Cabo (poor dear) to move into the next phase of planning.

Oh boy.

73Berly
jan 7, 2016, 1:11 am

I know. Cabo. Life sucks. LOL. Does she know how to pick her roommates or what?! I offered to carry her luggage, but to no avail.

Graduation is indeed on June 13th, which probably means I will have out of town guests here around that time, too. But they may all leave shortly after or I could try and sneak away. Just not on the 13th. Let's see what Mark and everyone else has going on...

74SuziQoregon
jan 7, 2016, 3:28 pm

Hey guys! Just wanted to promote this Literary Arts event, because it is a hot read on LT right now...

Anyone want to go??

Everybody Reads 2017, Multnomah County Library’s annual community reading event.

Tickets start at just $15. Click here to purchase through Portland5.com.

http://www.portland5.com/arlene-schnitzer-concert-hall/events/everybody-reads-20...

When:
March 9 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Where:
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
1037 SW Broadway
Portland, OR 97205

This year’s Everybody Reads selection is Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. In partnership with Multnomah County Library and The Library Foundation, Literary Arts is proud to present a lecture by Desmond as the culminating event of the 15th annual Everybody Reads.

Through the lives of eight low-income families, Evicted sheds light on the complex issues surrounding housing and its link to poverty. The book was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice, and Wall Street Journal’s Hottest Spring Nonfiction Books.

“Evicted is a candid look into issues that are so visible in our own community. With this selection, we hope to contribute to the critical and difficult conversations happening in our community around poverty, affordable housing and homelessness.” –Vailey Oehlke, Director of Libraries

Desmond, a Harvard sociologist and MacArthur Fellowship recipient, offers a national perspective on one of the most pressing issues facing Portland. Through tireless reporting, Desmond exposes the truth about housing in America and offers fresh ideas for solving the devastating problem of eviction. The 2017 Everybody Reads shared reading experience is an opportunity for Portland to discuss these issues, learn from each other, and create tangible solutions for our community.

Okay, this is probably a bit radical, but I think I can drive down on Friday evening, probably have to drive back on Saturday.... or drive down on Saturday morning, drive back on Sunday morning (that might work better).

The reason it's radical is that I return from San Antonio on Wednesday and fly to New Orleans on Monday. I will be working Thursday and Friday..... It's just a bit whirlwind but I want to attend this meet up!!!

I'll probably try to make reservations at a hotel in/near the Pearl district. I've stayed at the Inn at Northrup Station in the past....

There is this restaurant in Portland at which I have never eaten but everyone says it's the best one in town (which is saying something). I can't remember the name of it. Probably reservations required so it might not be what we want. Andina?

107Berly
feb 4, 2017, 12:07 am

Oh, Andina is really good! You definitely need a reservation to eat in one section of the restaurant. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights. They also have a bar and a downstairs that take walk-ins. It might be worth it. Not sure it is within walking distance of Powell's, but it is REALLY good! Let's keep it in mind.

>107 Berly: Is it on the high-end, cost-wise, Kim? I am willing to splurge but also very willing to do something more moderate. I'm most interested in Powell's and meeting up with my buddies (yes, that means you all).

I have actually never been to Andina's, and always meant to, so I would be happy to go there, but I checked the menu and it would be a splurge. If we have a big group, perhaps better to do something lower cost?

I am still putting this Meet-Up on my calendar but I need to say that eating in a restaurant at a long table with a large number of folks, in a noisy restaurant, is painful for me. I basically cannot hear anything except the ambient noise of the restaurant. I do OK at a smaller table, but even better in a quieter restaurant.

Are any of the place you've been tossing around quieter? Can we split up into groups of 3-4 so we can actually have a conversation?

I understand if this doesn't work for everyone, and if the plan ends up with all going to a noisy fun place, I'll probably just peel off and go read. Imagine that?

118banjo123
feb 11, 2017, 1:38 am

hmm. I don't think that there ARE any quiet restaurants anymore. I thought Henry's was quieter than Deschutes, though. Does anyone have other ideas? I did think about Jake's, which is quieter, I think, and very Portland, but kind of pricy.

Another idea for early afternoon before Powell's: The Portland Art Museum

American Photographs
FEB 11 – MAY 28, 2017

“The humor, the sadness, the EVERYTHING-ness and American-ness of these pictures!” Jack Kerouac’s introduction to Robert Frank’s 1957 book The Americans captures the spirit of Frank’s groundbreaking images and harnesses the unrelenting enthusiasm for photographs depicting diverse aspects of American culture. Works by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Harry Callahan, and Edward Weston, as well as a significant selection of Frank’s photographs from The Americans, reveal the many ways artists used the camera to chart 20th-century society in the United States, from the Great Depression to the Civil Rights era and beyond.

Rodin: The Human Experience
JAN 21 – APR 16, 2017

Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections, an exhibition of 52 bronzes by the groundbreaking French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The exhibition, which opens January 21, 2017, is being staged in Portland to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s death. One of the greatest artists of his time, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) revolutionized the art of sculpture. While his works always remained faithful to nature, he departed from traditional practice in seeking to reveal the creative process. This exhibition of stunning bronzes will demonstrate Rodin’s particular passion for modeling the human form in clay, the medium in which his hand and mind are most directly evidenced.
The selected bronzes in the show represent the major achievements of Rodin’s long career. They include powerful studies for The Burghers of Calais, as well as works derived from his masterpiece, The Gates of Hell. Others, such as The Night (Double Figure), demonstrate his experimentation with assemblage. Rodin: The Human Experience also features sculptures, such as Monumental Torso of the Walking Man, which demonstrate Rodin’s admiration for Michelangelo, and Dance Movement D, which speaks to his interest in understanding how the body moved.

The exhibition is especially rich in portraiture. Included are Rodin’s famous depictions of the writers Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac; the composer Gustav Mahler; the artist Claude Lorraine; one of his favorite dancers, Hanako; and his portrayal of The Hand of God, which is likely a self-portrait.

Rodin’s ability to use bronze to represent living flesh and his interest in expressing extreme psychological states were highly influential upon younger artists, both in Europe and America. Rodin: The Human Experience reveals why the artist is considered the crucial link between traditional and modern sculpture.
