Editions of Grimms Märchen for a German learner

My daughter's German GCSE class has been using extracts of Grimms' fairy tales / Grimms Märchen from a graded German reading book, and she now wants to read more of them in the original.

Are there German editions that you would recommend, and editions that you would warn against? She has recently been reading Stephen King and Susan Hill, so probably won't thank me for an edition with added saccharin, à la Disney.

I'm probably going to be dependent on what's available on ebay.de

Are you looking for illustrated editions or just text?

If it's text only, you can't go wrong with Reclam, they have a complete annotated edition and also selections in their yellow-jacketed "Universalbibliothek" imprint, very inexpensive.

There are numerous illustrated editions available, but serious publishers for children's books do not mess with the original texts, they just adapt the spelling to the current norm. Publishers like Knaur, Sauerländer, Thienemann, Dressler should be safe.

One of the most famous first lines is the one for the Frog King:
In den alten Zeiten, wo das Wünschen noch geholfen hat, lebte ein König, dessen Töchter waren alle schön, aber die jüngste war so schön, daß sich die Sonne selber, die doch so vieles gesehen hat, darüber verwunderte so oft sie ihr ins Gesicht schien.

These are unadapted versions of Grimm's tales with a choice of a bilingual version or just German with vocabulary and notes.

There's also a bilingual version of a number of tales "Selected Fairy Tales/Ausgewählte Märchen" by Dover Publications

Another possibility is to search amazon.de in the category Bücher > Schule & Lernen > Deutsch als Fremdsprache (this should turn up books adapted for non-native speakers, rather than very young children)

Many thanks for the answers. I eventually got a copy of Knaur's edition, and a copy of the Folio Society's English translation that was going cheap on eBay. There's stories there I've never even heard of before.

Ruth Koser-Michaëls and Arthur Rackham's illustrations really do give very different feels to the two books. Not that my daughter's noticed. Although she may deign to look at them once she's finished re-reading the Percy Jackson series!

I hope you and your daughter enjoy them. The Knaur edition is the one I had as a little girl and it's still my favourite.
