I have a modest but respectable collection of a couple dozen books on the Middle Ages in Europe, ranging from several short, easygoing accounts of everyday life to some fairly heavy-duty histories by Barbara Tuchman, Norman Cantor, and others. They include books on costuming, witchcraft, and myths and stories.

I'd be grateful for suggestions on how best to find someone who might like to adopt the whole collection, which I gathered some years back by way of research for a novel that never materialized.

Since they represent a nontrivial investment, I'd like to sell them as a group, negotiating a price that would be a bargain for the buyer and still offer me some compensation, especially for the larger and the more scholarly volumes. They are mostly in very good to like-new condition. I'm not interested in posting them one at a time on Amazon Marketplace; from my experience, the shipping fees would not cover the cost of mailing most of these.

How might I go about finding a prospective buyer? For instance, if a student or instructor at one of the local universities might be interested, how might I reach them? I have no idea.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

How about starting by listing your books as a collection on LT? I'm sure many would be interested to have a look.

For instance, if a student or instructor at one of the local universities might be interested, how might I reach them?

Contact the chair of the history department, who should be listed on the university's website.

>2 stellarexplorer: Oh--you mean create a "collection" label for them and put them all under it? Great idea--I'll do that. Thanks.

>3 lilithcat: Another helpful idea. Thanks for that, too.

Ok--I now have a collection labeled "Medieval history" (as distinct from the tag, which includes some other things). It's the last one on my list.

It turns out that I have 19 titles. There were a few strays on that shelf, so not quite as many as I thought.

A few of these, notably Ladurie and Tuchman, have pencil notations; but some are as fresh and crisp as if they'd just come from the bookstore: a clear case of good intentions outstripping reality.

That's just what I meant -- it is a lovely collection, Meredy.

Oh, thank you. I have no basis of comparison. I hate to give it up, but I have to pare down my library, and it's time to let my unrealized idea go.

There was a discussion about this topic on the academic listserv mediev-l recently. You might want to see what they have to say about it. Go to their archive page and type in for the subject: "Legacy Question."

I haven't looked at your titles but I'd say one option if you want to move a large number at once would be to contact used booksellers. Two that come to mind are Loome and Powell's but there are others. You could look at the exhibitor listings for this year's Kalamazoo or St. Louis University Medieval Conferences. Or see what sellers are listed on Amazon or Abebooks and contact them directly.

>8 cemanuel: Thanks, I did try. That search term returned no results. I can't access anything anyway without logging in, and I'm not a member.

What I have isn't a large number--only 20 titles. I think I'll try contacting several of the nearby universities. Checking out the Amazon sellers is another idea I can use. I'm grateful for all help.
