I should like to recommend Damion Searls' recent edition of Thoreau's Journal. Although I have been dipping into Walden for many years, I had only encountered odd extracts from the Journal. Mark Cocker drew my attention to this new edition in a note in BBC Wildlife magazine, so I got hold of a copy and am now savouring its delights. It is just as good as Walden, and in some ways - because of its freshness and ephemeral, unfinished quality - even better. A 43 minute interview with the editor is probably more persuasive than I can be.
