'A Monster Calls' by. Patrick Ness. Definitely a book that hits you right in the heart. You will cry.
'The Way I Used to Be' by. Amber Smith. This book will probably also make you cry. It is my favorite book. Its about a girl who was raped freshman year and now she is going through her four years of high school with this secret.

In Young Adult books? Okay... in no specific order, just browsing my shelves...

The Cay, Theodore Taylor
The Higher Power of Lucky, Susan Patron
Bluefish, Pat Schmatz
As Brave as You, Jason Reynolds
Moon Over Manifest, Clare Vanderpool
Paperboy, Vince Vawter
Each Little Bird That Sings, Deborah Wiles*
Kira-kira, Cynthia Kadohata
Black Angels, Linda Beatrice Brown
Olive's Ocean, Kevin Henkes
Bridge to Terebithia, Katherine Patterson
Castle Hangnail, Ursula Vernon**
Getting Near to Baby, Audrey Couloumbis
The Tiger Rising, Kate DiCamillo
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, Jacqueline Kennedy***
Jim the Boy, Tony Earley
The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
The Wednesday Wars, Gary D. Schmidt
The War that Saved My Life, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Orbiting Jupiter, Gary D. Schmidt
Wonder, R.J. Palacio

*Do not read this if you can't handle crying a lot. One of the saddest books I've ever read.
** The funniest, sweetest book you'll ever read about wicked witches and haunted castles.
*** I am convinced that Jacqueline Kennedy is the reincarnation of Mark Twain as a woman.

Echoing two from fingerpost's list that were potent reads:

The Wednesday Wars Gary D. Schmidt
The War that Saved My Life Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

A few others from scanning the shelves --

Day of Tears by Julius Lester
Silent to the Bone by E. L. Konigsburg
Whirligig and Seek by Paul Fleischman
Nation by Terry Pratchett

and two older titles that were important as the start of series --

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin and Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. (Still waiting to read her most recent in that world.)

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

The book really got me thinking of all the women who actually do stay with the men who miss treat them. I'm sure they all have the're reasons. I actually used this book as an example when I tased with someone about the subject and still do till this day.

I loved Star Seed Nation Ascension into 5D by Shar Veda. It is recently published and very well done. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Seed-Nation-Ascension-into/dp/1791328695/ref=tmm_pap...

A lot of what I read in elementary school really stuck with me. I guess just the introduction to reading at that age made a big impact. The ones that really stick out for me are:

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - importance of family (made me wish I had siblings LOL)
Island of the Blue Dolphins - surviving in the face of adversity
Julie of the Wolves - care of animals
A Wrinkle in Time - made me think about abstract realities
The Prydain Chronicles - Wicked fun to read :-)
