What sort of music/sounds do people like to write or read to? I know when I wrote college essays late into the night, I favored the Star Wars soundtrack... Or maybe the Jaws theme.
Similarly, who here likes to pick "theme songs" for their stories? Admittedly, this is often just a procrastination technique I use when I can't think of anything to write, but I'd be interested to hear if music helps others delve deeper into a scene or get to know a character better.

Aw, darn, and here I was hoping someone else was actually attempting to write a soundtrack.
Not that I have the composition chops to write a real soundtrack -- what I actually have is a bunch of tunes that are the "themes" that I would want in the soundtrack, if I ever had one, most of which have lyrics to go with them because I get tired of singing "la did dah dum" to them all.
They're for my space pirate graphic novel Flag in Flames (which seems convinced that it's not a comic book at all, but an actual movie ::eye roll::).
So I've got a Grandiose Space Theme "Ahead 1 G" and the Pirates' Theme "Running Blind". And then there's the themes for the various characters: Silver's Theme "One Light in the Darkness" (my kids won't let me sing that one they think the lyrics are too depressing), Blood's Theme "Revenge" (they love that one though), the Talon March (also very fun), and the villian's theme, (not yet named because it's still just a tune with no lyrics) then there are the two love themes "Waltz in a Whirl" and "Flame and Steel", the pivotal moment of decision song "Winner's Choice" and to wrap it all up, an End Credit Song "They Say" that has essentially nothing to do with the actual story. (That's traditional, isn't it?)
So I do use music to delve deeper into a scene or get to know a character better.
But I don't listen to music when I write. For me, music is something I experience too actively. Having it going on while I'm writing is a distraction.
