I am looking for the best Audiobook Publisher houses that publish the classics and literature in CD format, not the downloadable format.

I am familiar with Tantor Books and Recorded Books but I am looking for others that have a very strong listing of the classics and literature; not current fiction.

Do you have suggestions?

I listen to a lot of audiobooks published by Blackstone Audio.

I like both Chivers audiobooks and BBC audiobooks. They seem to both do a good mix of classic literature and high quality narrators. Not all of the titles in their catalogues are classics though .

Yes, I remember Blackstone but Chivers made BBC audiobooks are new to me.

Thanks.

>4 Urquhart: I wonder if that's regional - I'm answering from a UK perspective - which may not be as helpful if those companies don't produce audiobooks available elsewhere. The thought hadn't occurred to me when I posted the first response - I know that the library from which I borrow the majority of audio books has a lot of Chivers ones.

FYI: In a series of mergers and acquisitions over the years, Blackstone Audio now has the Chivers, BBC America Audio and AudioGO U.S. titles in their catalog, so Blackstone has a rather extensive selection of Classics available.

Naxos did a great job on Kafka on the Shore. When I looked for other titles I found that a lot of what they publish are the classics.

I know a bit about the history of the audiobook industry. In the 70s, 80s and 90s the best quality books were produced by Recorded Books. The lowest quality by Books on Tape. "Quality" being a function of narrator, production, direction not the book itself. RB pioneered the professional studio reading using professional actors. Post-Audible era (ie. mp3 downloads which started in the late 90s) the industry has matured and there are many good productions, but RB remains one of the best. Claudia Howard was a big influence there, more info
