Thanks for the elucidation of this passage in Herodotus. BTW the reference on the linked page to "See also : About the excavations in Amheida (in Dutch)" leads to a short discussion actually in English, by NYU.
Kaper's account is more plausible than the sandstorm story, but I would like to know how he reached his conclusion. Do you know if he has published a paper on this? I can't find a reference to one, or to the proceedings of the conference mentioned in the link.
