I'm currently reading The Master and Margarita, and when I'm done, I'd like to read Heart of a Dog. Any advice on the best translation of Heart of a Dog?

I have an edition translated by Mirra Ginsburg but I haven't read it yet. I can unequivocally recommend the Marian Schwartz translation of White Guard, not least because it is the only complete translation.

I read the Mirra Ginsburg translation of Heart of a Dog many years ago and remember thoroughly enjoying the book...almost as much as Master, which is saying a very lot. I also greatly enjoyed Michael Glenny's translation of A Country Doctor's Notebook, a collection of stories written in a much more realist and somewhat decadent mode. On the other hand, the collection of stories in Diaboliad, translated by Carl Proffer, all fell disappointingly flat to me. I still need to read Black Snow...

Good news about Heart of Dog, and too bad about Diaboliad, because I have the Proffer translation too.

Anything as long as it isn't P/V.....
