I clearly need to visit and revisit this group more often.

A 1979 hardcover of Jerzy Kosinski's Passion Play, in pretty good shape overall and (to my knowledge) carefully stored in a dry environment for the last 20± years, has both inside dust jacket flaps firmly adhered to the front and back free endpapers. (The dust jacket front was similarly stuck to the dust jacket back of Blind Date, but less firmly, until I pulled it before recognizing the problem.)

Any suggestions on an appropriate means to unstick the dust jacket flaps from the flyleaves with minimal damage to either would be greatly appreciated. A thanks for at least entertaining the thought!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Alas.

>1 jasbro: I don't think I'd noticed your question when you asked it; sorry.

I usually first try the freezer, which often assists in this type of situation. I leave it in the freezer for at least 12 hours, and then see if (trying gently) a sharp knife can assist in loosening the cover flap from the book. You don't say how far the glue extends (whether to the end of the board or not). I'm hoping that there's some room to try this method.

>4 Lyndatrue: Thanks for the suggestion; I had not thought of that, but I'll try it. For the record, it's not actually glued -- or it wasn't when I packed it; but it had adhered over time nonetheless. I think it had something to do with the finish of the dust jacket (which always felt a little different). I'll let you know whether a little time in the freezer helps ...

>5 jasbro: You may also attempt to use steam (don't do it too near the freezing thing, though). If you haven't yet put it in the freezer, a little gentle moist heat might just do the trick. Protect it with brown paper (of the grocery store bag/lunch bag variety), and try not to come into actual contact with the paper.

Now I'm wondering what it was that was in the dust jacket... Thank goodness most of my books predate such things.

I've seen this too. Some types of coating on dust jackets meld with the inside of the covers when the books grow old. Perhaps you should ask an antiquarian bookseller?
