Sixteenth DUPLICATES THREAD

1CDVicarage
Bewerkt: jan 19, 2016, 10:19 am

I thought I'd move us on to another thread as the last one was getting rather long and I'm reposting my current list.

I've gathered together all my Virago duplicates in one place and I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I have so many. I'll happily send anywhere but outside Europe will go Surface. If in UK do choose two as the postage will be the same as for one.

Original Greens:
Lady Oracle (has had water damage but is now almost completely flat again)
O! Pioneers

A Game of Hide and Seek
Precious Bane (rathered battered front cover)
The Judge (two copies! one printed 1980 the other 1987; the older one is in better condition)
The Sugar House

Second Style Greens:
The Weather in the Streets
Blaming
A Sea-Grape Tree

Modern Coloured:
The Constant Nymph (mint)
In a Summer Season
The Enchanted April (mint)
The Fountain Overflows
Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont film tie-in cover (mint)
The Land of Green Ginger
The Land of Spices
The Vet's Daughter

O! Pioneers!. I like what I've read by Willa Cather so far and I've been looking for this for ages so if you would be prepared to send it to NZ I'd very much appreciate it.

I have been trying to have a bit of a clear out to make space for more of the incomings (ahem!) and I thought I'd update the dupes list. I *will* send abroad if no-one in the UK wants though this would have to be the cheapest and slowest method. As Kerry says, if UK peeps want to pick two books this will cost the same as one to post. Here goes:

Greens:

Elizabeth Hardwick - The Ghostly Lover
Maureen Duffy - The Microcosm
E M Delafield - The Diary of a Provincial Lady
Rebecca West - The Return of the Soldier
Rebecca West - Cousin Rosamund (a bit tatty - ex library)
Sybille Bedford - A Favourite of the Gods
Grace Paley - The Little Disturbances of Man
Pat Barker - Blow your House Down
Molly Keane - The Rising Tide
Molly Keane - Full House
Molly Keane - Devoted Ladies

Modern covers:

Kate O'Brien - Without My Cloak
Pat Barker - Union Street
Pat Barker - Liza's England
Daphne Du Maurier - Rebecca
Winifred Holtby - The Land of Green Ginger
Barbara Comyns - The Vet's Daughter
Molly Keane - Loving and Giving
Molly Keane - Good Behaviour
Molly Keane - Time after Time
Barbara Pym - Some Tame Gazelle
Barbara Pym - No Fond Return of Love
Barbara Pym - Less Than Angels
Barbara Pym - Jane and Prudence
Barbara Pym - A Glass of Blessings
Barbara Pym - Crampton Hodnet

Virago Travellers:

Edith Durham - High Albania

Strange Virago hardback about poetry:

Words that Burn - Josephine Hart

Non Virago Pyms:

Quartet in Autumn
The Sweet Dove Died
Civil to Strangers

Let me know if you're interested!

56: I don't think you need to read Molly Keane in any particular order. You have one of her earlier books and two of her later ones there - Molly Keane stopped writing for nearly 30 years. It's always said that this was after the death of her husband but that was in 1946 and there were two novels published in 1951 (after a 10 year gap) and 1952, and two plays, then a long interval until 1981, when there were another three.

Not a duplicate but part of my 'two year purge'; I am looking for a U.S. (simply due to shipping costs) home for a couple of Virago. First the wonderful WWII diary: A Woman in Berlin. I loved it and hope someone out there will as well. It is the hardcover Virago edition. Also Ruth Adam's I'm Not Complaining in the green Virago edition. If someone wants both of them, that is fine by me. Less in shipping costs so I can purge more. :-)

Sheep's Clothing by Celia Dale (green spine)
2 copies of South Riding by Winifred Holtby (one green cover, one modern VMC cover)
The Rising Tide by Molly Keane (M.J. Farrell) (green cover)
Family History by Vita Sackville-West (green cover)
Willa Cather: A Life Saved Up by Hermione Lee (green spine)

All in good condition. The modern cover South Riding is in excellent condition.

Sorting out my tbr bookcase today I discovered I had two copies of

Afternoon of a good woman both of them those brand new green VMC print on demand editions - so I must have bought the same book twice.

I also have a second edition of Family Money also by Nina Bawden - it is green spine but not an original green. I always seem to forget which Nina Bawden books I have and so end up buyng the same ones twice - the same has happened with Molly Keane in the past.

If anyone would like it - please let me know.

Now in November by Josephine Johnson (modern cover)
The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West (modern cover)
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (modern cover)
New York Mosaic by Isabel Bolton (modern but with green spine)
The Orlando Trilogy by Isobel Coolegate (newer green - a little worn)
Millenium Hall by Sarah Scott (original green)
A Woman by Sibilla Alkeramo (a black cover?)

I'd prefer to keep them in Europe as postage costs are so hideous nowadays - give me a shout if you'd like any.

>101 kaggsy: I would love New York Mosaic and The Orlando trilogy if no-one else has claimed them. And I've never heard of The Woman - if it doesn't put the postage up then I'd like that too, unless anyone else would like it. I don't want to be greedy (and goodness knows, I've plenty of unread books already!)

>102 Sakerfalcon: Very, very happy to send all three to you Claire. I imagine the postage will all be under the 2kg small parcel rate in the UK so it will make no difference to add the third book! I probably have your address somewhere, but if you want to PM it to me just in case I will get these sent off at the end of the week! :)

I have five really lovely University of Chicago Laurence books. Since I replaced them with ebooks I would like to offer them to one person to save postage. They are heavier than the VMC editions, so I have to keep them stateside.

The Diviners
A Bird in the House
A Jest of God
The Fire-Dwellers
Stone Angel

Let me know if you are interested in all four and I'll mail them to you next week so you have time for read them for the June group read.

*Bump*

Just been having a bit of a clear out on a sunny Bank Holiday (as you do) as the books are becoming unmanageable, and there are a few Viragos lurking which will go off to the charity shop - however, I thought I would offer them here in case anyone is interested. You will see there is a lot of Christina Stead.....

I will have to say UK only owing to postage costs for the rest of the world - sorry, overseas pals. I wish there was a more economical option to ship abroad.

Christina Stead:

The Beauties and the Furies
A Little Tea, A Little Chat
The Salzburg Tales
The Puzzleheaded Girl
Miss Herbert

Joanna Godden by Sheila Kaye-Smith
The Tortoise and the Hare by Elizabeth Jenkins
The Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield (this is the VMC30 hardback but it's a bit worn)
By Faith and Daring by Glenys Kinnock

Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner (NOT a Virago edition but a Virago book and author)

Let me know if any of these interest - and as it often costs the same to send more than one book, don't be shy about asking.... ;)

*Bump* again!

I have been taking a long hard look at my Viragos as the need to downsize the house is getting closer and closer. So I have had to be realistic about which books I will read/re-read and have come to the conclusion that these titles will have to go.

These are all greens:

The Orchid House - Phyllis Shand Allfrey
The Lying Days - Nadine Gordimer
A Particular Place - Mary Hocking
The Wind Changes - Olivia Manning
Fenny - Lettice Cooper
The New House - Lettice Cooper
Ann Veronica - H.G. Wells

Plus in modern covers there are:

The Dud Avocado/The Old Man and Me - Elaine Dundy

I also have a copy of Louisa Treger's The Lodger (her book about Dorothy Richardson) which is also looking for a new home.

If anyone wants any of these before they go off to the charity shop please do shout. It will have to be UK only, as the postage costs for overseas have shot up again. And if you're in the UK and would like more than one please say so, as it will probably cost the same to send a couple! :D

Ooh I can't resist a duplicates post! Thank you for thinking of us, Karen.

Could I please have Joanna Godden and Ann Veronica?

>106 kaggsy: Thanks from me too, Karen! Could I please have The lodger, and if the postage will cover both, The wind changes?

>107 Soupdragon: I think Joanna Godden went to the charity shop a while ago as my first list was from 2018. However Ann Veronica is your Dee, and if you want anything else from my post from today, please say so! :) If you address is the same as for VSS I have it I think.

>108 Sakerfalcon: Both of these will be fine, Claire - I'll get them off to you! I still have your address if it hasn't changed!

I would much rather these books went to someone on here than the charity shop! :D

I am looking for a classic (original or second style) green VMC of Elizabeth and her German Garden by von Arnim. Any hints or leads greatly appreciated.

I have a full set of the modern Virago reprints of Angela Thirkell's Barsetshire novels (except The Demon in the House which they didn't reprint). They are read but very carefully, all have my name and the date inside the front cover, no other damage or annotations. I think I will have to limit it to the UK, sorry (maybe Europe too at a pinch). Would somebody like them? I've enjoyed them all but I don't think I'll need to re-read them now I've done them all.

Now that British Library Women Writers (under my auspices :D) have reprinted A Pin To See The Peepshow by F Tennyson Jesse, would anybody like my VMC copy? Probably won't send til January, but let me know!

I'm assuming nobody wanted the above, but a nudge before it goes to a charity shop!
