I had so much fun with this question in my interview with Slade House author David Mitchell, that I want to pose it to this group, as well.

I think part of why haunted house stories resonate so well is that many of us recall strange houses that others automatically avoided (for reasons supernatural or not) from our childhoods. Do you have any haunted houses that you remember?

Our house in Vancouver wasn't haunted...as far as I know! But we kids loved it because there were passages so we could go from one bedroom to another from behind the walls. And, there was a secret entrance to the basement from under the front steps.

Oooh, I have a few haunted stories in my lifetime! I'm a scientist at heart, but I definitely believe in paranormal energy after my experiences. I'll share one of them:

One of my best friends growing up, Val, had a family that just seemed to be really connected to all this supernatural stuff. Every house they lived in, there were ghosts and unexplained phenomenon that followed them around. One night, I had gone to Val's house for a movie night, just the two of us. The way her bedroom was situated in the house, the doorway faced the wall of a hall: to the right was the kitchen, to the left was the living room. Val was in the kitchen making popcorn and getting snacks together, I was picking out movies in front of the TV - to my right was the doorway. As I was browsing Val's stacks of movies, I caught something in the corner of my eye. I looked to my right, and saw a woman walk past the bedroom, from the kitchen. She had black holes where her eyes should have been, 80's style jeans, and long, blond, curly hair. She was facing me as she stepped down into the living room. I froze.

I clutched the DVD I had in my hand tight as ever, still frozen, and quietly called out to Val. I was too scared to call out louder, should the woman hear me. I called out again.

"What?"
"Can you come here?"
"What's up?"
"Just come here?" I still couldn't move.

A few seconds later Val entered the room. "Can you shut the door?", I whispered. She shuts the door, starting to look worried at my expression, but curious at what I had seen. After the door was shut and Val was by my side, I finally felt safe enough to move. I explained to her what I just saw, and without a hitch, Val says, "Oh, that's my grandfather's girlfriend. She died in this bedroom a few years before him. My nephew sees her all the time."

Oh, well that's nice! Val and her family have grown so used to spirits following them around, they don't even seem phased by them anymore. It's exciting to tell the stories after, but always scary in the moment! That was my first encounter with the paranormal, and definitely not my last. :)
