Way Back! The year my youngest grandma was born. I've heard of The Garden of Allah and of course Edith Wharton's House of Mirth, but none of the others.

1. The Marriage of William Ashe, Mary Augusta Ward 0 copies on LT

2. Sandy, Alice Hegan Rice 0 copies on LT

3. The Garden of Allah, Robert Hichens 11 copies on LT

4. The Clansman: A Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan, Thomas Dixon Jr. 30 copies on LT

5. Nedra, George Barr McCutcheon 5 copies on LT

6. The Gambler, Katherine Cecil Thurston 0 copies on LT Ignore this touchstone, it's confused.

7. The Masquerader, anonymous (Katherine Cecil Thurston) 0 copies on LT

8. The House of Mirth, Edith Wharton 1,791 copies on LT

9. The Princess Passes, C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson 1 copy on LT

10. Rose o' the River, Kate Douglas Wiggin 7 copies on LT

The Clansman was the basis for Birth of A Nation (1915) directed by D. W. Griffith.

Marcella is the most common of Mary Ward's books.

Mrs. Wiggs of the cabbage patch is the most commonly owned book of Alice Rice.

Still, no bells ringing?

Well, Wiggen wrote Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

I've read several books by Kate Douglas Wiggin, including Mother Carey's Chickens and The Old Peabody Pew, and I own a copy of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, but I've never seen Rose o' the River.

the Clansman by Dixon was one of a number of books written by him fictionally recapturing the "good old days" where the black people "knew their place" (often on the end of a rope). good historical fiction, but don't buy the car. I own a copy. Just haven't gotten around to reading it since i bought it circa 1972. hehehe.

Looking back over this old thread I've realized that my fiance helped clean out his deceased uncle's effects and found a copy of The Clansman that had apparently been owned by the uncle's grandfather, so an early version. This was in New Jersey! I asked him what kind of people he was related to, but it was an uncle by marriage. ;)

Interestingly, The Clansman is the second book in a trilogy. The first book is The Leopard's Spots, which I own and have read and reviewed here on LT. Fascinating as an historical artifact, but, ugh, extremely hard to wade through, unless you like being covered in slime.
