Dee (Soupdragon) is consuming Baileys in 2016

I'm not sure that there's many of us left but I do want to read some more Orange/Baileys nominees this year. Though I also hope to read more Persephones, more Virago Modern Classics, more fantasy and I have a couple of new psychological thrillers bought on Friday which are calling me, so we will see...

As I mentioned on another thread I was planning to read The London Train by Tessa Hadley this month. However so far I've been mostly immersed in reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and rather busy at work, so that hasn't happened yet.

I have just discovered audiobooks though (or more specifically audio updates to kindle books I already have) and was able to listen to seven chapters of The Song of Achilles (Orange winner in 2012) whilst tidying up and ironing yesterday. So hopefully that will end up being a January Orange/Baileys read. Depending on much ironing I do this month 😉

Audio books are great for 'sneaking' in reading. I have an afghan I'm crocheting while I listen. Good luck in your reading. I have tended to read more Baileys in March and April when the long list comes out so don't worry about January so much.

Hello Joyce, good to hear you're still around. I would love to spend more time on these forums but work and study ends up dragging me away. Still reading but not quite as much as I was!

Just to update that I did manage my two Oranges in January : Song of Achilles (enjoyed with reservations) and The London Train (liked it but not my favourite Tessa Hadley by a long shot).

I'm now looking forward to the 2016 shortlisting, after which my local library will stock multiple copies.

Hi there Dee! I just caught up with this thread. I haven't read Orange/Baileys books as voraciously as I did a few years ago, so I don't have an active personal thread in this group (I track everything on my 75 Books thread). I'm glad to see you here!

I really liked Song of Achilles. What were your reservations about it?

I did enjoy The Song of Achilles but sometimes that full on intense love for Achilles made me a bit queasy and towards the end Patroclus's passive, caregiving role in the battle seemed unconvincing.

It may be significant that I listened to it on audio which is quite rare for me.

>8 Soupdragon: I am not an audiobook reader/listener, but I could imagine the experience is often very different. I really loved Miller's writing, that was a significant part of my reading experience (more than plot, character, etc.). So the experience could be quite different listening vs. reading.
