The Robber bride, by Margaret Atwood vs. Eudora Welty's Robber Bridegroom.

I haven't read either of these books, but I have the Atwood on my to-read pile.

Does anyone know if she wrote her novel in a response of some sort to Eudora Welty's? Or is the similar title just a fluke?

I think I may have read Eudora Welty's novel years ago, but I haven't read Margaret Atwood's novel.

I strongly suspect that both books take their names from a spooky and wonderful Grimm's Fairy Tale called "The Robber Bridegroom." In it, a young woman is married (against her inclination, if I remember correctly) to a man who turns out to be the leader of a gang of murderous thieves. On her wedding night, they have a huge banquet and do all kinds of dreadful things, and she is afraid of being murdered. But she's the plucky type, and manages to outwit them and escape. Quite the feminist tale!

Oh, thank you. I'll read the Grimm first, then the other two.
