Just noticed this on eBay...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-High-Place-HBDJ-James-Branch-Cabell-GD-1923-Ltd-1st-...

It's the true first, limited (but not signed), illustrated by Pape, WITH the dustjacket -- for $18.95 plus 4.50 s&h (buy now, not bid).

(The first Kalki printing was the second overall.)

Comps on ABE...
without jacket -- $25+sh on up
with jacket -- $60+sh on up.

... so this is a bargain if you want a jacketed copy.

Looks like there might some dings, and the jacket looks 'short' but more likely is just on crooked. But might be worth an inquiry on those points.

Erg: tempted.

Will take a look at my current copy tonight, and decide whether I can do with that one, or not!

I took the plunge, for $23.45 ... I like the Bonibooks edition I have now, but -- no Pape. So that clinched it.

Enjoy...

This was the first American edition of a Cabell book to use Pape illustrations. The only previous Pape Cabell was the 1921 UK Jurgen from John Lane/Bodley Head.

Arrived today, as advertised: good condition, not great but the block and boards seem solid, and the Pape illustrations are worth it. I think I'll keep the paperback Bonibooks edition, at least until I find someone who might be converted to the Rabble.

Nothing wrong with having two editions. Actually, the Boni is probably slightly revised.
