Newbery Project

I happened upon your group as I was searching for a review of the 1950 Newbery medal winner. I too have challenged myself to read all the Newbery winners. So far I have twelve to my name! There is a site that may be of interest, especially if you wish to read reviews.

I've challenged myself to read 10 additional Newbery winners by the end of the school year. They'll be The Higher Power of Lucky, Criss Cross, Dobry, Invincible Louisa, Waterless Mountain, Shen of the Sea, Tales From Silver Lands, The Story of Mankind, and two I haven't chosen yet.

I'm sure I've read a dozen or so of these, but I need to check the official list; I'm reading My Brother Sam is Dead this weekend...

After getting a list of Newbery Medal books in the 5th grade, I made a plan to read at least all of the Medal books and as many honor books as possible. So far I have read 65 out of 87

wow, you've got most of them down... I've slacked off on the Newberys, just too much other stuff on the nightstand; I'm keeping track here and throw in comments on the above "newberryproject" blog...

Yeah...I started this goal in 5th grade. I try to read about 10 books each year. It's getting harder b/c I can find the books at the library.

just snagged nice hardcovers of MC Higgins The Great, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and Wrinkle in Time at a library sale for .5o each!

Nice to find this group. I've challenged myself to read more Newbery Medal/Honor books this year, but I'm not going to commit myself to a number. I've been feeling nostalgic for books I read as a kid, and realized that most of them are a blur to me, so it might be nice to revisit some of them.

Mebrock - I too am aiming to read all the Newbery award winners. I am taking part in the 999 challenge and one of my categories is Newbery Award winners. So far this year I have read Miss Hickory, Island of the Blue Dolphins and am now reading The Trumpeter of Krakow. If you are interested go

Oh dear - I am so very sorry. Do you know the Newbery blogspot mentioned at the top of this thread? There are a wide number of reviewers and enthusiasts who are all passionate about their reading. Meanwhile, I will try and link again.

juliette-- your 999 project sounds great. I am a lot more haphazard in my reading, and I'm wondering whether it might be a good discipline to organize my stack of reading.

Welcome nmhale - and do share your reading thoughts as you journey on with your Newbery reading! I was thrilled yesterday when I returned Island of Blue Dolphins to my library as there was a request from another reader!

#16 Have you checked out the site dedicated to Newbery reads - it has a great selection of reviews and you may well 'know' or recognise some of the contributors.

Looks like the 2009 winner was announced this week - Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book ... well I wanted to read it anyway, now I have one more reason.

Juliette, saw your review of Miss Hickory. My girls love books about the secret lives of dolls, so I might have to look for that one! I've started collecting books that play upon that theme.
