Julie: You may have seen or read about Bill Nye's 2014 debate with creationist Ken Ham.

I commend the author for continuing his efforts to make the process of evolution more understandable to the layman - a formidable challenge, to be sure. In Chapter 38 he explains why he changed his mind about genetically modified foods - and how their benefits are greater than he originally believed. I've been taking a lot of notes.

I tried to write a joke with a dull pencil, but it was pointless.

Although I've never done a "big year", and am not so inclined, I've been a birder since 1988. This is yet another book (there are several) which recounts the effort, expense and logistics involved in finding and identifying 700 species in a single year.

Juliet: I recommend that you read the reviews of this excellent book. The author repeatedly makes clear that "loners" are often viewed as aberrant, even potentially dangerous. Personally, it's my preferred modus operandi. I flee "hen party" chit-chat.
