26 foot statue, most likely of Ramses II (the Great) found buried in a Cairo slum. Much excitement ensued.

Now it seems the statue may be of the little-known Psamtik I

A bit OT but today (Feast of the Annunciation) The Times (London) reports that an alabaster head of Queen Tiye (Tutankhamun's grandmother) has been unearthed at Luxor under the feet of a colossus statue of Amenhotep III in his funerary temple. Would have given a link but it's behind a pay-wall but no doubt there will be reports elsewhere.
