PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM

Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

>3 Cecrow: Still, you should continue to check things out. Every once in a while, I'll see something that was listed in what may be the off hours for some of us, and it'll still be there, a few hours later. There's other things that will keep something around, too, such as if the miscreant has added a book or two (usually still spam, but LT doesn't differentiate). A little click on the profile, when someone's put it up there, is always useful to do.

You never know.

Some spam I sort of understand, especially from enthusiastic authors. Snorkel equipment advertising, as an LT profile ... I just don't get it. Folks must get paid per URL they can promote on, whether it makes any logical sense or not.

41MarthaJeanne
Bewerkt: jun 7, 2017, 8:08 am

But if they get paid for each ad that is still up the next day, LT is not a good place to waste their efforts on.

Nor is it worth the while of those paying. Any spam that is still up is so well hidden that it's not going to bring in customers. But we still see, besides the small stuff, the same ads day after day to be removed again.

I don't get it either.

I want to raise the issue of why those topics aren't automatically disappearing from view with our developers, and I need an example to show them.

I don't mind manually deleting threads like this on my end, but a) it's annoying for you folks to have to ask us to do it, rather than having them hidden automatically, and b) doing so hides the fact that those posts ever existed, even from the admin side, and seeing posting history for repeat offenders is important.

Whatever happens, I'll remove the remaining thread by Friday, at the latest.

I have begun worrying recently that somewhere the double message trick was being mentioned somewhere as a way of getting around spam controls. In a few cases we have seen spammers use two new member names to try and keep a topic active. That possibility should be included in any attempt to close this loophole.

About meI am the publisher of River Boat Books. I am also the author of The Conjure Man (2010) and One Last Dance with Lawrence Welk & Other Stories, which was a 1997 Minnesota Book Award Finalist.

Because he is now claimimg not to be the publisher. (see: https://www.librarything.com/work/19405243/book/140977816)

Glad I copied that. He has taken the reference to River Boat books off his profile. Innocent enthusiasts don't post the same message in at least 7 different groups.

Can someone correct this? I am unsure what should be done.

ETA: I've removed the Common Knowledge entries that had been used by the spammer, and for the edification of the curious, the entries I deleted were Series, Canonical Title, and Alternative Title. I hate spammers so very much.

I wouldn't be surprised if some are showing up in threads I don't check but everything seems to start in Book Talk: either spam or help me find this book I love but don't remember.

Tim is looking at it again. At the time I posted there, there was over a page of spam with only one other message on my screen.

(I had flagged the spammers I saw, but I could have been the first.)

Are we going after profiles before they do anything? I know dental offices and jewelry stores that have books to catalog as much as the private user. Where's the rest of the spam? Is it a review, a work, a posting?

>184 gilroy: The dental office had a several paragraph-long description all about us and why you should come to us. They catalogued only one "Book" which they reviewed with a repeat of the description. If they had been cataloging dental and medical books I would say it was a legitimate use of LT.

Jewelry stores that have a sales pitch and website but no books would also seem to be here only to advertize.

BTW, one flag takes it off the new groups page, but it is important that enough people flag the profiles.

I'm not sure what you mean. So, the spam folder holds things that we suspect are spam. It doesn't kill the user and indeed it doesn't kill the topic entirely--it just stays in spam. It turns red and is completely unreachable if the user is marked as spam.

>284 Collectorator:

If you're a member of this group, go to the talk tab and look on the left.

>281 timspalding:

I've added spam-testing for groups. The data set is smaller, and it looks only about 75% effective. At present there's no way to see what's being killed automatically. I'll add something tomorrow.

286Lyndatrue
jul 12, 2017, 2:11 am

I often go there to hurry along the process, and when I've killed the topic (it had nearly enough flags to finish it off, so I helped), I fully expected to see the tombstone (which is normal, in that case).

User profile http://www.librarything.com/profile/Vuongnguyen is still unsuspended, even though he hit so long ago. Even if they're flagged red, I'm not all that sure that they aren't able to cause other trouble (I note that when I rescue someone who has ended up there inadvertently, that they're still able to make other posts). I check the folder as often as twice a day, especially when we seem to have a lot of this sort of thing going on.
