This book was touted as a "Portnoy's Complaint" type novel. I read it back in the late 70s or 80s. The only thing I remember about it is the lead character goes to a European country to visit his father. After arriving he has an encounter with a prostitute. When he meets his father, he repeats a phrase the prostitute used.
His father says "You just said, Ow, ow, ow, your large penis is hurting me.",
That's all I remember.
I've had this up over at Goodreads for a while. Here's what's been eliminated.
The Celibacy of Felix Greenspan
Hazzard's Head
Barney's Version
It's none of the other Mordechai Richler books.
Nor is it something by John Irving.

This is a weak suggestion, but have you looked through works by Saul Bellow? Maybe he took a story that direction.

I don't think the author was anyone that well known. I looked through Bellow's books anyway and didn't see anything familiar.

Another one eliminated A Sport and a Pastime.
