Deaths in June - 2018

John Julius Norwich died June 1st 2018 aged 88. He was a prolific author of books on history, including A Short History of Byzantium.

Art historian Irving Sandler died June 2 at the age of 92. A few of his many books include The Triumph of American Painting: A History of Abstract Expressionism, Art Of The Postmodern Era: From The Late 1960s To The Early 1990s and The New York School: The Painters and Sculptors of the Fifties.

Author Jill Ker Conway died June 1 at the age of 83. Her books include The Road from Coorain, True North : A Memoir and A Woman's Education.

Designer Kate Spade was found dead of an apparent suicide on June 5 at the age of 55. She wrote Style, Manners. Occasions (New Series of Lifestyle Books) and Kate Spade: Contents.

Food writer Barbara Kafka died June 1 at the age of 84. Her many books include Roasting-A Simple Art, SOUP: A Way of Life and Vegetable Love.

The oldest baseball hall of famer Red Schoendienst died June 6 at the age of 95. His memoir was called Red a Baseball Life.

Celebrity chef, travel writer, and television host Anthony Bourdain killed himself in a hotel room in France where he was filming his CNN television show on June 8. He was 61. Artist Malcolm Morley died June 1 at the age of 86. His work can be seen in Malcolm Morley and Malcolm Morley: New Paintings and Watercolors 1984-1986.

Nobel winning biochemist Paul D. Boyer died June 2 at the age of 99. He wrote a multi-volume series called The Enzymes.

Prolific historian Ira Berlin died June 5 at the age of 77. His books include Many Thousands Gone and Generations of Captivity.

Biographer Jerry Hopkins died June 2 at the age of 82. His many books include No One Here Gets Out Alive, The Lizard King: The Essential Jim Morrison, copies,
Strange Foods: Bush Meat, Bats, and Butterflies: An Epicurean Adventure and Elvis: A Biography .

#9--it's a funny thing with Hopkins and me. Reading his and Danny Sugerman's 'No one here gets out alive'--their bio on the Doors singer Jim Morrison is what really set me off on the reading kick. They remarked on Morrison's wide ranging reading habits all throughout that book and it's really where I first encountered such a thing as a reading list. So thanks to all of them I'm on LT today.

Fashion designer and illustrator Michael Vollbracht died June 6 at the age of 71. He wrote Nothing Sacred.

Mad Magazine contributor Nick Meglin died June 2 at the age of 82. His books include Drawing from Within and The Art of Humorous Illustration.

Former member of the Stop Watch Gang, Stephen Reid died June 13 at the age of 68. His books include Jackrabbit Parole and A crowbar in the Buddhist garden.

Holocaust survivor Gena Turkel died June 7 at the age of 95. One of the British soldiers who liberated her from Bergen-Belsen became her future husband. She wrote I Light a Candle.

Voting rights activist Dorothy Cotton died June 10 at the age of 88. She wrote If Your Back's Not Bent: The Role of the Citizenship Education in the Civil Rights Movement.

Fantasy/sci-fi author Christopher Stasheff died June 10 at the age of 74. His many works include The Warlock in Spite of Himself , Her Majesty's Wizard and The Warlock Unlocked .

Controversial Actor Leslie Grantham died June 15 at the age of 71. His memoir was called Life and other Times and a children’s book Jack Bates and the Wizard’s Spell.

Irish cook extraordinaire Myrtle Allen died June 13 at the age of 94. Her books include The Ballymaloe Cookbook and Myrtle Allen's Cooking at Ballymaloe House: Featuring 100 Recipes from Ireland's Most Famous Guest House.

Australian golfer Peter Thomson died June 20 at the age of 88. His books include This wonderful world of golf and The Players: Golf.

Specialist in immunology, Dr. Adel A. F. Mahmoud died June 11 at the age of 76. His books include Schistosomiasis , Eosinophil in Health and Disease and Tropical and Geographical Medicine: Companion Handbook.

Pianist and professor of music Frances Slocum-Walker was the first black woman to be granted tenure at Oberlin College. She died June 9 at the age of 94. Her memoir was called A Miraculous Journey.

Former NBC News correspondent who wrote about Kissinger and Kennedy, Richard Valeriani died June 9 at the age of 85. He wrote Travels With Henry.

Philosopher Stanley Cavell died June 19 at the age of 91. His books include The Claim of Reason and Must We Mean What we Say?.

Political commentator Charles Krauthammer died June 21 at the age of 68. His books include Things That Matter: Three Decades of Passions, Pastimes and Politics,
Democratic Realism: An American Foreign Policy For a Unipolar World and Cutting edges: Making sense of the eighties.

Editor and literary critic Nina Baym died June 15 at the age of 82. She is the author of Feminism and American Literary History and Novels, Readers and Reviewers among others, and was one of the key editors of many many editions of the Norton Anthology of American Literature.
