Has anyone else noticed that several of the older titles in the Knopf/Random House Everyman's Library seem to be out of print, even though they continue to be listed in the list at the end of even the most recent volumes. Such out-of-print titles do not, however, appear in their on-line catalogue. Examples include all of the Evelyn Waugh titles, the two earlier volumes of Chekhov stories, several of the Trollope volumes, the Katherine Mansfield volume (The Garden Party and Other Stories), The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, and many others. This is very disheartening.

The Waugh titles seem to be a special case--it may be that an agreement with the estate reached term. Same with Grass. Several titles out of print in the US are still in print in Britain and importable. I've also found four of the Waugh titles used in very good condition. Almost all of these may be tracked down. My Tin Drum is a British jacketed edition. I suspect that they let the older public domain titles go out of print and then eventually reprint them with dust jackets--most of them (Mansfield, for example) were originally published without before the Random House/Knopf takeover in 2002. Everything published since and reprinted has had jackets, it seems.

The other anomaly is that amazon shows several titles seemingly in print with dust jackets pictured, but then says that it comes without, and this is actually the case, so my theory about reprinting may not be accurate in all cases. (See Balzac and Lampedusa for examples). Could the art be pending a reprint or just made for e-book purposes? I wish they would rationalize the line.

I struggled to get at least one of the Waugh books seven years ago when finishing the collection and ended up getting a second hand copy, so they have been an issue for a while
