So, picked up on old book, and I want to read it, but some of the damn signatures aren't cut. Suggestions as to the best way to open them up?

Use a paper knife or a bookbinder's knife.

How about if I wanted to do it with something likely to be found in a grad student's apartment?

Do you have a relatively sharp letter opener? Or a paring knife?

A brand (or nearly) new coated playing card. If you don't have a bookbinder's knife.

You want to separate the papers with a dull object. A credit card works quite well.
