Ideas for "Challenges" in book?

Hi, I am currently writing a book, and I was wondering if you could help me with a few "challenges" the main character has to go through. She lives in a palace and is a maid. There are people attacking the palace but not killing anybody. Now some might say it sounds like selection, so i need help with different "challenges". Anybody got ideas?

It would round her out a lot if she has some personal issues that have nothing to do with the palace attack; husband/boyfriend trouble, son/daughter trouble? Maybe that other person she's having friction with is visiting when the attack breaks out, and getting through the crisis is what helps smooth things over in the end? Or a budding romance with someone else working the palace, and these blue collar workers save the day together?

I don't feel like I know enough about the book/character to properly advise on good challenges.

Knowing the setting would help. If you want to look for challenges, tv shows or books that involve noble born people and staff interaction might give you some ideas. Downton Abbey, for example, has lots of staff drama going as well as what's affecting the family at large. Things like how to improve your position in the household, get a coveted job, what sorts of things you'd get in trouble for, etc. Since it's Britain, the wars do roll into things so there's that as well.
