I am working on inputting my 1000+ collection of cookery books and am running into an issue. Is there a conventional tag for the hometown/church cookbook with the spiral binding, no ISBN of course but lots of heart? Pamphlets by applicance sellers or grocery growers? Or is there a nice FAQ page that I need to see before asking a question like this? Cheers, Selene Sue.

You can tag them any way you want. I tag them "church ladies" and "appliance". But your tags don't need to mean anything to anybody but you.

Tags on LibraryThing are never "conventional"! ;-)

You should first ask yourself, "what is the function of my tags?" (not someone else's). Are you using tags to locate the books in your house? Are you using them so that you can group similar books together in a search? Is it to remind you what books you loved and which you hated? Or is it to describe the contents?

From your question, I think it's the last you want. So use whatever term you think is appropriate. A lot of folks seem to use "community cookbook": http://www.librarything.com/tag/community+cookbook and "fundraiser cookbook": http://www.librarything.com/tag/fundraiser+cookbook for the first kind you describe.

You can, of course, use more than one tag on a book. So you might have "community cookbook, spiral-bound" on one book, "advertising cookbook, pamphlet, dining room bookcase - top shelf" for another.

It's really all about what works best for your needs.

ETA: Just so you know, you've given me an earworm. I'm humming, "To tag the untagable book, to sort the unsortable tome" to the tune of "The Impossible Dream"!

OK, I was trying to make it accessible if someone else was perusing my collection. Some of this stuff is not under a copyright, the "church lady" stuff, not always produced by a church, but in my collection is as likely to be from a play's cast The Joyful Potluck Club, a sic-fi fanzine The Star Trek Bartenders Guide and suchlike.

I shall probably use "community" as the tag, thank you Lilithcat.
