My goal is to get my eyeballs on at least 75 books, be it reading them, skimming them, DNFing them... I have gotten to the point that I have too many books and I need to weed out. Last year, I had a massive book purge and got rid of 155 books (plus a few e-books and a few of my daughter's board books). I need to do something similar again this year.

I haven't hosted a series or an author for a while. I'd like to do so this summer, during a month when the most interested folk have the time to do at least the targeted book, which is only 200 pp. long. I'd like to expose as many people as possible to the works of James H. Schmitz, a science fiction author who wrote from the late '40s through the 1970s. He is best known for The Witches of Karres, but imho has written much better works. Here is my bookshelf.

Many of his works, especially his shorter ones, were very hard to find for quite a while, but in 2000 and 2001, Baen published almost all of his oeuvre in a collection of 6 books, seen to the right of the shelf above. The book I would like to feature is Demon Breed, also found in the Baen collection The Hub: Dangerous Territory. Schmitz is known for his kick-ass female protagonists long before they became the current ubiquitous status quo in his stories about Telzey Amberdon, Trigger Argee, and the hero of Demon Breed, Nile Etland.

See my thread for more info if interested!

>1 Quaisior: While I like many books by Melanie Rawn and almost everything I've read by Kate Elliott, The Golden Key was one of the few fantasy books I got relatively far into and then abandoned. Though I know I've read some books and stories by Jennifer Roberson, she has made no impression on me.

Sorry I haven't been around. I broke my ankle at the beginning of June. I got the cast off early last month and just last week, I started walking without crutches. I was lucky because I only broke one bone and didn't need surgery, so I should have a complete recovery.

I have been reading but I'm so tired that I don't get to read too much before I fall asleep. And I'm reading huge, long books by Sheri S. Tepper, so they take forever. I'm also reading most of my Vonda N. McIntyre books this year, catching up on Lois McMaster Bujold's novellas, and I hope to catch up on Julie E. Czerneda's books, but I'm not sure if I will get to her two long fantasy books this year or not.

>6 Quaisior: I really enjoyed A Turn of Light but A Play of Shadow didn't impress me nearly as much.

I also really liked A Turn of Light but haven't read the sequel yet. It is sitting on my shelf, hugely.

>7 quondame: and >8 ronincats:, I will be reading those Czerneda's plus her anthology Tales from Plexis next year. My daughter didn't go to pre-K this year, plus with my broken ankle (mostly healed now), I didn't get to read nearly as much as I wanted to.

The Golden Key just wasn't interesting to me. I haven't like anything I've read by Roberson, aside from one short story. I haven't read Rawn or Elliott yet, but my best friend highly recommended Rawn's Dragon books.

>9 Quaisior: Rawn's dragon books don't do it for me, not that they are bad, but just not special and well - blond desert dwellers?
I found her recent series Glass Thorns much more unusual, the equivalent of magical fae-ish rock band adventures, with a serious under-story. I am a major Kate Elliott fan, and have enjoyed a number of other Czerneda books, but don't think I've read any of Roberson's novels. At least I have no record of it for the last 12 years.
