Short, slightly sentimenal stories about animals, including tamed wild animals (kill the parent as a pest, keep one of the young as a pet - not much changed there then). Several of tamed animals came to unsentimental ends, probably too trusting, probably at the wrong end of a gamekeeper's gun, probably killed by the local otter hunt, ...

>3 Cynfelyn: Oh! I'd be snatching up Otter's Story. Great cover, and besides the otter is my totem animal.

This is one I've had on my shelves for a little while, unread...bought for the cover (shame on me!):

Maybe I should move it closer to the top of the TBR pile?

Here's an old favorite, cover and illustrations by the wonderful Kurt Wiese

The story is good, too.

And speaking of a good story with a great cover:

Jump-shy is a childhood favorite, a wonderful adult read, and has ink sketches by Paul Brown! Delight!

Addendum: that cover isn't high definition enough to show you why I love it, here's another better example of this illustrator's work:

I've got four beautiful Myrtle Reed books, published by The Knickerbocker Press, my notes say Margaret Armstrong is the designer, though only one is marked "MA":

Some foreign books become very popular in Poland, and then are published for 60 years in various editions, e.g., Eric Knight, Lassie Come-Home. Knight's second wife had a Polish maiden name, Brylawski.
