That essay won the Cabell Prize in 2000, but I would swear I read it in the mid-1990s. It confirmed some important suspicions for me, and set me off on research trails that I'm still pursuing today.

I vaguely recall one or both of you mentioning this essay in this group sometime before, and true to form, whatever I read of it then has fully escaped me. Hoping to re-read and have a bit more stick.

Patterson probably was already doing research on Heinlein, and probably on Cabell too, and perhaps published in journals material that later was folded into this essay?
The Cabell Prize still exists today but for the last 15 years or so has been a 'best first novel' prize instead of anything directly to do with Mr Cabell.
