Copy and pasted this from the JB forum. This is a response from JB when someone asked what was next after The Dresden Files was comple & if there would be more than six books in the Codex Alera Series.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Questions:
What will Jim Butcher do after The Dresden Files are over?
Will he simply retire or is there something else planned?
Will Alera ever be visited again after the first six books are over?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Response:

Fend off letters and emails (or who knows what by then, it's almost 15 years from now) from various interested parties who will doubtless be demanding more Dresden. I could probably make a full time job of *that*.

But it's depressing, really. I've worked it out, and even if I managed to discipline myself up to about 3.5 books a year, I've got enough ideas to write until I'm 85 and still not finish the books in my head. And, gosh. There are way too many boffer weapons and video games (and who knows what by then, it's almost 50 years until I'm 85) for me to go up to 3.5 books a year.

Maybe they'll get that life extension technology right, and I'll have another 30 or 40 years. But by then, I'll have had ideas for so many more books that I'll never get to finish *those*, either.

BUT, for the immediate future, here's my plans:

Alera has six books in it. I'm gonna write those, and we'll be done with Alera. I won't write off the idea of going back some day entirely, but at this time, I'm not really planning on it. Stories begin and go, and then they end. That's what stories do. If they don't end, they aren't stories--they're moneymaking franchises.

After Alera, I'll probably start in on my science fiction series, which right now is titled US Marshals. It's set in an entirely off-Earth but in-system nation, a couple of centuries in the future, when things are still sort of recognizable to what's in the present, but when genetic manipulation of human beings has begun to cause various civil, social, medical and personal problems. The off-planet society seceded from those taxation-without-representation, get-to-breathe-air-for-free parasites in Washington/London/Beijing/Et Cetera a little less than a century ago, and is something of a haven for the genetically awkward, and in the United System, it's the Marshals who keep the peace.

Plus, then there's the aliens. Earth is sort of on the receiving end of the alien version of a Prime Directive, but you know what they say: When contact is outlawed, only the outlaws make contact, and it's the United System Marshals who have to deal with them. The only aliens who ever show up are the psychos, the ones on the run from the law, religious nutballs trying to find a quiet spot, social or political extremists who had been run out of their own worlds and are looking for asylum, or general troublemakers out performing the alien equivalent of cow-tipping, which explains MOST of humanity's encounters with aliens throughout the 20th and early 21st century--and also describes most of the people who happened to show up on the shores of the Americas from Europe, back in the day.

Which is a little chilling if you stop and think about it. The Marshals have--and they have no intention of playing Montezuma to an alien Cortez. So it's up to them to protect the entire system (the idiots on the ball of mud included) by making sure that people at large remain ignorant enough of alien civilization to keep humanity protected from open contact until they can develop socially and technologically to the point where they won't be simply washed away by a much larger outside civilization that really doesn't give much of a damn about them.

So. The first book of that is halfway done. I left the protagonist hanging in a decaying orbit in just a suit, having ejected from his ship, over the surface of the moon, with a solar flare coming on, and no hope of rescue before he went roast or splat about.... what, three, four years ago? He's been there since then.

After THAT I think I'll write my EPIC Epic fantasy EPIC. With BIG THICK HONKING BOOKS. And HUNDREDS of CHARACTERS. And MAPS! And hobbits and dwarves and elves! And horses! And swords! And doom! I'm..... not sure any of those things will be recognizable as those things. Sort of how pretty much nobody recognized furies as pokemon until I pointed it out. But. Well, the horses. And the doom. Look, it's going to be EPIC and fantasy. I might have to learn a bit about sailing. Oh God. That would entail me... sailing. Dramamine. Where is my dramamine.

So that should carry me to the end of the Dresden Files. When I'm writing the final three of those, I'm doing nothing else. Gonna focus.

After THAT... Hmmmm.

Well. We'll see. The other ideas are still competing to see which falls out best. I've got ideas for three different modern-setting fantasies that /aren't/ Dresden universe books (and two that are, but aren't Harry-related), a /really/ interesting far-future Science fiction idea, and two fairly interesting fantasy ideas which both feel really neat, but which I think need more time to cook before they're ready to work on.

Always assuming, of course, that life doesn't throw me any curve balls. Those happen. Maybe there's a horrible nailgun accident and I find out I can't remember how to remember things any more. Or maybe I find out I can throw a 99 mile an hour fastball and the Yankees want me--no, wait. Then I'd have to move. Screw the Yankees. Me and my fastball would stay here and write.

But the point is that you never can tell what's going to come at you over time. In the absence of writing-ability-killing factors, though, there is my plan.

Jim

When I start reading the Alera series I will have to pay very close attention to the furies.

I wonder do they ever say anything like "Pikachu I choose you" when calling out a fury?

Man gonna have a giggle over this for awhile its classic!

ROFL!

NO!! They never say that. Oh my dear. If that was ever in the book. Oh jeez.

And what do you mean "when" you start reading the Codex Alera series? What is this "when" that you speak of?

That should be a "now." They are amazing. Just blows your mind that the same author that wrote the Dresden books also wrote the Codex Alera series.

I know I know, Bad Caspettee.

I actually put down the other book, its a collection of articles anyway and I have book one next to me as I type. As soon as I finish with the pc Im starting the book straight away. I think I put off reading the series as I had a spate of awful books and I wanted to cleanse myself of those books.

So if Im not around for a couple of days you know why LOL

They might not say Pikachu I choose you.....but they do say things like "Rill I need you." ;-)

I'm with you Cursor's it really is mindblowing that the same person wrote the two series.

Caspettee - what better way to clense yourself than with the greatness that is the Codex Alera?? They'll have you forgetting all those bad books.

Stupid me *smacks forehaed* I am loving this book! Yes I had forgotten that there are still authors out there that create these awesome books that you just cant put down. Though I think this thread has gone of track now LOL.

Cant wait for the other planned books.

I look forward to the planed books from JB...but I wish that there were going to be more than 6 Codex Alera book. Although I am aware that all good things must come to an end...especially an epic series like this.

Caspe, sometimes it's a shock when you pick up a book like this. You're so used to books that are entertaining and enjoyable, and that you might want to re-read a page or two. Then you start this, and you forget every other book that you've read before while reading this, and you wonder how you could ever read anything that's not this and say it's great. Kinda sad really. Ruins you for the average book. ^_-

I would love more than 6 from the Codex series, but they're so strong that more than 6 and I'd be worried that they might loose something; like so many other long series do. My biggest thing with this series is that I want it to end well. As in everything wrapped up, and a nice set up for the future of the characters. So you have plenty to daydream about without having a lot of unanswered questions.

Now Butcher says above "EPIC Epic fantasy EPIC. With BIG THICK HONKING BOOKS. And HUNDREDS of CHARACTERS."

Well Codex felt a bit "epic" to me. (Who really cares what it's called anyway.) But I really hope he gives us a character list with this EPIC, HUNDREDS of CHARACTERS, fantasy. Codex is bad enough. Maybe even a map. lol.

Yes I think sometimes unless you have the series and books mapped out ala JK Rowling & Harry Potter if the author isnt careful the series just sort of fades away.

Although 6 as a total number of a book in the series is disappointing if it means the series stays strong and interesting then I would prefer that.

I think Cursor your right I have been spoiled reading some great series and most other authors just seem to disappointed me now. I try other books but I always go back to my faves :)

I had thought he was just making up the Dresden series as he went along - but it sounds like there is a planned story Arc fro them too - Small favour plus three more? or was that indefinate amount inbetween now and then when I'm writing the final three?

I like authors who can do varied worlds and characters!

13Caspettee

reading_fox maybe the majority of the time he is making it up but he has an overall idea of where Dresden series is going? I thought for Dresden files he was planning something like 10 odd books, but perhaps I misunderstood that?

Yes it is great that he is willing to try completely different things and he (so far) writes them really well. I don't feel like one series is a lesser series.

Hi, all ~ I just saw that Butcher's coming out with a comic, Welcome to the Jungle, Part 2 (I didn't even know Part 1 was out). Check these out: http://www.jim-butcher.com/news/000277.php and http://www.jim-butcher.com/news/000272.php. Has anyone seen this yet?

So I looked on Amazon and the 1st two in the series are currently unavailable (at least through them). But they do have a book coming out that contains all 4 comics in the series, all bound together in a hardcover edition. Will sell for $19.99 when released but you can pre-order it for $13.37

When asked about the length of the Dresden series at the 04/09/09 signing in Omaha, Jim replied that he had roughly 20 books charted out for Harry - so, lots to look forward to!

*sigh* thank goodness what would I do with out my dose of Harry? I guess I would re-read all the books until I know them off by heart word for word....heck I'll do that anyway :)

CursorsFury:

Furies as pokemon?? . . . Furies as . . . POKEMON?!?!

LOL!!!

I just can't see it.

I think he's got it a bit backwards there: furries like anthropomorphic animals in general, and most, if not all, Pokémon are sentient in-universe to various extents, so…the intersection of people who like Pokémon and people who are furries themselves probably has quite the respectable size even though I have only a passing familiarity with it. (Never mind, you probably know that at some level already…)

On an entirely unrelated note, anybody know when the next Cinder Spires book is coming out?

According to the 20 August 2017 update of
http://www.jim-butcher.com/faq/upcoming-works
Jim will start writing The Olympian Affair (Cinder Spires #2) when he finishes Peace Talks (Dresden #16).

In case anyone isn't aware, Codex Alera arose from Jim accepting a dare to write a story combining two cheesy central concepts: Lost Roman Legion and Pokémon:
http://www.fantasyliterature.com/author-interviews/jim-butcher/
There are also a bunch of Q&A videos on Youtube from signings and conventions over the years where he tells this history.

Edit to add: The latest Q&A I listened to (posted 6 September 2017) re-tells the story, during minutes 19--25:
