Ethical veganism is a belief protected by law, tribunal rules

Jordi Casamitjana, a former employee of the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), claims he was unfairly sacked after he raised concerns with colleagues that its pension fund invested in companies involved in animal testing. A preliminary employment tribunal has now ruled that ethical veganism (whole-life veganism, as distinct from dietary veganism) satisfied the tests required for it to be a philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010, and as such is protected by law against discrimination.

The LACS is a UK-based campaigning group working to end the hunting foxes and deer with hounds (fox-hunting has been illegal since 2002 (Scotland) and 2004 (England & Wales), but poorly enforced), dog fighting (illegal since 1835, but again poorly enforced), and some of the practices in the greyhound and horse-racing industries, among other campaigns.
