Just bought LEC - Way of All Flesh. What should I do to the leather?

Best condition I have ever seen for this sheepskin leather edition from LEC. Does have some wear to the spine but it is the least worn copy I have seen so far. The rest of the book's cover is fine. I know not to put these in mylar but what should I do to the leather to maintain these as best as possible? I can't believe this set was only $40 on ebay. The books haven't arrived yet but I want to give them the maintenance they need right away once they get here. I'd like to get whatever I need ordered now.

I read an article that suggested cleaning with Absorene first. I have one of those perforated bags with crumbled gum eraser inside so do I need to buy this?

Then, treating with Talas Restoration Leather Conditioner:

Will this regimen be sufficient? Any tips beyond this? I know to make sure the end papers don't come in contact with the conditioner.

Don't do anything to the leather, it's completely unnecessary and can be risky. Those two products are for extremely dirty (first) and deteriorating (second) leather. Book leather isn't like a leather saddle (or leather auto seats as that second link mentions); you don't need to do anything to it. If it starts to crumble to dust ("red rot") you can apply an adhesive consolidant to prevent more from coming off, but that's the most that book leather needs.

I was reading this article and they are recommending treatment. Are we sure I shouldn't apply anything at all? There is some wear to the spine of my copies.

I have little knowledge and less experience but I would go along with >2 jonsweitzerlamme:. When I was young and foolish I bought a couple of leather-bound works of Milton from 1757 and 1800. You could get such things then for a bob or two from junk shops. They looked a bit dowdy so I polished them up with wax shoe polish. On the shelf they stuck together and separating them pulled the surface from the backing.

There is a good medical dictum - primum non nocere - which fits here. First do no harm.

>4 RickFlair:

The article to which you have linked has to do with restoration of damaged leather, not maintenance of leather that is still in decent condition.

I found this youtube channel and others which advise products such as Cellugel and Klucel-G to act as a consolidant which keeps the leather from deteriorating further. Now I'm still wondering whether I should apply the consolidant to the whole book or just the problem areas. This lady recommends Hewits Leather Dressing for the healthy areas of the leather.

>7 RickFlair: Klucel-G can really darken leather. Make a small test in an obscure spot and let it dry before heavy usage. I would never use it to fully cover a leather binding. I only use it to halt red rot on old leather bindings. On the other hand, I did use it to completely cover the soft sailcloth binding of the LEC's Robinson Crusoe. The application is not very visually noticeable but it did a great job of stiffening up the boards.

>8 kdweber: It will darken the leather? The lady in the video said that it won't darken. Talas and other stores also say that it won't darken. I have also found other youtube channels saying that it won't darken. The same is said about Cellugel as well. However, it is a concern that I still have because I am not an expert and must go by what others tell me.

>9 RickFlair: Test it on another piece of leather yourself - an old shoe or handbag to see whether it changes anything vital.

>9 RickFlair: I'm just giving you my real life experience. I have Klucel-G and I've used it on multiple books. It has noticeably darkened most of the leather books upon which I have used it. Note it's completely clear when you mix it up.

Step. Away. From the book. With your hands up. Throw the canister away and lay down on your stomach with your hands in the air so we can see them. No desert tonight and your grounded for a week
