I read this book in middle school it was a small chapter book.
Plot: The story follows a nice guy who has a crush on/is dating a popular but shallow girl. She plays a prank on him by standing him up at the mall. In this scene, she watches him from afar as he waits for her, and she mocks how nervous and upset he looks when she never shows up.
Shortly after the incident at the mall, he is killed in an accident. However, he comes back as a zombie, seeking revenge on the girl for how she treated him.
I also remember a scene describing rotting hanging flesh towards the end of the book when the main group of teens find out the guy is a zombie.
Again, I read this in middle school, so it's probably an older book and its probably intended for a junior audience.

Could it be The Boyfriend? It sounds like it could be an R.L. Stine book.
