Off the top of my head: non-fiction, plays (but could combine that with poetry), horror, and young adult.

4DeltaQueen50
Bewerkt: nov 8, 2020, 7:54 pm

I am looking forward to this Cat. You could add Horror and YA/Children's Literature as genres and maybe add Plays to the poetry to make it's appeal a little broader.

ETA: Looks like Tess and I had some of the same ideas. :)

I'm trying to think how military/spy could be changed. Thriller could be a category and that would cover books with spies and thrillers that don't. Then again, is thriller covered by mystery?

Tess, for YA I think several of the topics could be read as YA books.
Fantasy could be a genre.

6Robertgreaves

>5 clue: I was basically thinking war stories for military/spy

7sallylou61
nov 8, 2020, 8:47 pm

I will like short stories to be included -- in fact when considering genres and voting for it, I was definitely thinking of short stories as a genre.

8DeltaQueen50

>7 sallylou61: Oh, I really like the idea of adding short stories/novellas as a topic.

9LibraryCin
nov 8, 2020, 9:44 pm

Could short stories be combined with poetry and drama?

10Robertgreaves
nov 8, 2020, 11:26 pm

Are short stories a genre in themselves? Wouldn't a short story be SFF, mystery, literary fiction or whatever?

11sallylou61
nov 9, 2020, 12:24 am

>10 Robertgreaves: Short stories are listed as a genre in:
(1) The pictured categories of literary genres when searching under or "literary genres" in google . -- this listing of genres also includes such genres as nonfiction, essays, poetry, drama, etc.
You have already poetry/drama as genres -- short stories would be no different.

(2) 21 of the most popular book genres from Oprah magazine: https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/books/a29576863/types-of-book-genres/

12Robertgreaves
Bewerkt: nov 9, 2020, 1:37 am

>11 sallylou61: I tend to think of genres as where books will be shelved in a bookshop or library, but OK I will combine short stories with essays as a possibility.

13DeltaQueen50
nov 9, 2020, 3:23 am

I notice that the list in the Oprah magazine puts mystery/crime together and then has thriller/suspense as a separate genre - should we do the same or is mystery covering all of this?

14Robertgreaves
nov 9, 2020, 3:30 am

>13 DeltaQueen50: ATM I'm leaning towards including thrillers/suspense in Action & Adventure. As it is we have 13 genres so far, so either we do some judicious combining or we do first come, first served and if nobody chooses to host a genre, it gets dropped.

15Tess_W
nov 9, 2020, 4:29 am

If you are wanting to combine, how about biography/memoirs combined with non-fiction? That could also include travelogues.

16fuzzi
nov 9, 2020, 7:14 am

>14 Robertgreaves: I think you could also combine Westerns with Adventure.

Horror/thriller should be separate, imo.

17clue

OK, I've combined Westerns explicitly with Action & Adventure. Any Westerns that don't fit there can go into historical fiction. We have 12 genres. So, please put in your bids for genres and months.

24LibraryCin
Bewerkt: nov 9, 2020, 9:10 pm

And someone mentioned (and I agree) that Thrillers could (I would assume this to be the case, anyway) be combined with Mystery.

So, Mystery/Thriller?

25Robertgreaves
Bewerkt: nov 9, 2020, 9:18 pm

>24 LibraryCin: I think thrillers are a grey area which could come under mystery or action & adventure depending on how physical or psychological they are. I have made this explicit, but host's/reader's choice.

nov 10, 2020, 12:16 am

I'd be willing to do either Poetry & Plays or Action & Adventure in March. I am guessing that Poetry/Drama/Graphic Novels will be less in demand so I will select that as my first choice but am willing to swap if anyone else would like to do that one.
