Is this where I might ask questions about a book?W or Memoir of a Childhoodwas recommended on elsewhere. Its a translation. Anyone familar with it? Thinking it might fit the childhood theme?
3thorold
>3 thorold: The Childhood theme is Reading Globally not Club Read. :-)
I read W or the memory of Childhood earlier this year, I think it should fit the theme very well, except that for some reason you always have to fight tooth and nail to get the right touchstone to show up... It's not a straight memoir, there are all sorts of different things going on at the same time, but at the core is Perec's experience of growing up during the war as the child of Jewish parents.

Thank you for setting up the 2021 group!
Is there a setting that allows/disallows non-group members to post on threads? If so, can it be set to allow it? There seems to be a fair amount of crossover between this group and the 75ers and the Category Challenge groups. Not everyone wants to join all three groups, and some non-member lurkers may want to comment on threads here on occasion.

I've moved the discussion of a potential group read of the Cromwell Trilogy over here to gauge interest and propose a timeframe.
For completely selfish reasons my suggested reading of this would be:
Wolf Hall - January/February
Bringing Up The Bodies - March/April
The Mirror and The Light - May/June
I'm happy to set up a group read if there's interest in one. Let me know.

>16 rhian_of_oz: I would be interested in this. I have read Bring Up The Bodies but not the others. (My RL book group was doing a read of the Booker shortlist the year that Bring Up the Bodies was listed - not ideal I know but didn’t have time to read Wolf Hall as well at that time, and I thought I knew enough basic history of the period to make it work.)
19kidzdoc
>16 rhian_of_oz: I'm definitely tempted by this proposed read. I've read Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, but it's been a long time since I did so. I was hoping to dive straight in to The Mirror & the Light, but if I seem to be lost in the details I may reread Wolf Hall with y'all.

I don't do well with plans and group reads but sure, why not. Catching up with Mantel is something I had been planning to do for awhile anyway... plus this will tie with the quarterly topic over in Reading Through Time.

Group reads aren't really my thing, so I don't think I'll be participating, but you all have reminded me that I still have a copy of Wolf Hall sitting on my TBR looking at me forlornly. Maybe I should try to get to it this year? Well, we will see...

Are you using a phone/tablet or laptop/desktop? Below are hints for the latter.
On the group home page (https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/23208/Club-Read-2021) I see INTRODUCTIONS as the ninth thread right now (obviously this will change as people post in other threads).
If you accidentally ignored it, on the left on any thread in talk there is a "Your World" section and second from the bottom is "ignored topics". Once you've clicked on "ignored topics" maybe try "control-F" (or the mac equivalent) to find the thread? (Apparently I've ignored a lot things so that page is a mess!)
>36 cindydavid4: Font too small? I was having issues with talk pages "screaming at me" when everything switched to bold. Again if on a desktop/laptop, try "control-0" (number zero) to see if your browser is zoomed out. Also at the bottom of the page there is a "tT Change Style" link that will cycle through a couple of different fonts/styles, maybe one of those is more visible?

>39 ELiz_M: Hahaha! You are joking, right? If all that doesn't work, power down your device, look into a mirror and say "reboot" forward and backward three times, throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder, and reset your password, ensuring that it contains no letters, numbers, or any unique characters.
P.S., That did work, but if you are using a phone or tablet, you may have to view in landscape before you see the left-hand nav bar. Also, you can't see the nav bar that leads to ignored topics on the group home page, only when you have a thread open.
I monitored ignored topics a lot, so this is really fubar if you ask me. Which they clearly didn't.

Question for anyone who knows the back end of LT a bit more than I do: Are groups like this one accessible only to people who've joined, or can anyone read what's posted here? No dramatic reason—I just had a less-than-stellar opinion of a book that I was thinking of posting on my thread but that I don't particularly want the book's publicist to see. I know anyone can look at the reviews posted on books' individual pages, but I was curious as to whether someone not in this group could track down, say, my thread via the Conversations button.

>71 lisapeet: Our group is also completely open - anyone can read and write even if they are not a member. And the Conversations tab on the book will lead anyone to your notes - if you touchstone the book.
I suspect you have your reasons but worrying about a publicist when you share an honest opinion sounds either like a publicist or an author who cannot take any critique. Which is never good.

And while I may feel like hers wasn't the best-written piece of literature I've come across, I don't want anyone going into our conversation with bad feelings, because we can still talk about craft and authorial choices and all that without my having loved the book. These things depend on my having good chemistry with the panelists, so no need for me to say something negative that could get back to her beforehand—that would be more mean than honest.

75stretch
>71 lisapeet:: It's viewable by anyone and searchable by google to some extent. I only know this because some of my pencil reviews have turned up in the various corners of the internet. Book stuff is probably drowned out but you never know who might be digging deep enough.
76lisapeet
>75 stretch: As I thought. I've had publicists write me at my work email about reviews—positive stuff and thanks, which is of course always welcome. So I know they're definitely sifting through the reviews. And eh, if I were a professional reviewer whose reputation rested on my being brutally honest at all times I probably wouldn't hesitate. But this is a feel-good panel, and kind of a side gig within my regular job, so I'm cool with pulling some punches.
77thorold
>76 lisapeet: I'm not often in that situation, but on the odd occasions that I've posted reviews here of books by people I have to deal with in the real world I've tended to hold back from posting publicly until I had the chance to talk to them about what I'd thought of the book. It doesn't feel fair to surprise someone with (possibly unjustified) criticism when their stake in the process is much bigger than yours. Obviously that's different if you're reviewing professionally.

Ooooh - thanks Colleen. Wasn't aware.
Update - now I've had a chance to look at them properly, how interesting is that? By a country mile my most read genre is the one that until recently I was convinced I don't overly like - historical fiction. Well, there you go. I've been reading it all along and not realising it. And I've also been getting stingier with my star ratings over the years.
Love the stats on 'talk' messages too.

>81 AlisonY: That's what it said for me too, Alison, and I thought I didn't like or read much Historical Fiction.

Hmmm. I burrowed down to see what books they included in Historical Fiction...and I disagree with some of the categorizations (especially if that's supposed to be the primary category). Historical romance is primarily romance, secondarily historical. Ditto fantasy, especially ones that are set in a vague "historical-ish" period.
Ok, more checking - books appear in multiple categories, so I guess that's OK. I still object to something like A Natural History of Dragons counting as historical fiction - not any history of this world! Though the cultural patterns are vaguely like some in our history. Hmph.
The charts and graphs are fun - and seeing gaps is likely (like the last set of charts!) to set me fixing errors in my library. This will be...interesting....

>83 jjmcgaffey: Multiple genres are allowed - so historical romance can be both in romance and in historical usual.
Fantasy is somewhat different I think though - you can flag or remove (it will only be in your catalog but Tim is keeping track) - we had a long and heated discussion around GenreThing in the last few weeks... and they are still doing some work on big sets. https://www.librarything.com/topic/333532 and its previous threads if you are curious :)
PS: Genres had been around for a few months- the graphs just made them more visible I guess.

Yeah. I had missed them completely - though now that you say that, I've seen GenreThing mentioned somewhere. Fun! Though...yeah, I'll look at those threads. The genres listed are way too limited (poetry can be, I guess, just Fic & Lit, though that's limited. But I _need_ Humor as a genre! And what about music - is that fic or non-fic? and... I'll go read the threads, I suspect all of this has already been discussed).
86AnnieMod
The idea is for them to be limited - like shelves/sections in a bookstore. :) But yes - Humor had been requested a few times. :)
87jjmcgaffey
So has music. And a lot more I don't need, and a few I do...We'll see how this shakes out. The bookstores I go to have more sections than this (or different ones). It's interesting as is.
One very interesting thing is how Tim started out saying that Fiction/Non-Fiction were catchalls for what didn't fit into a more specific section - but then the graphs make that the primary split and don't, for instance, lump Science Fiction into Fiction (they don't assume that a book marked SF falls into Fiction). He'll have to change it one place or another (though I've already added Fic & Lit and Non-Fic to a great many of my books).

The Geeks who love the Classics group is a quiet group, but a new activity has emerged this year, as two group reads have been organised, respectively for O! Pioneers by Willa Cather and Howl's moving castle by Diana Wynne Jones. As you can see, we have a broad definition of classics!
We are currently voting for the two first group reads for 2022, planned in January and April.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Le Grand Meaulnes by Alain-Fournier
Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
La Petite Fadette or Little Fadette by George Sand
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

As you know (or you are learning now), LT is organizing the usual card exchange program again. So if you like doing that, come join us: https://www.librarything.com/topic/337078
In addition…
I like sending and receiving postcards but my address book is awfully short. So if someone in the group wants a real postcard (which may or may not arrive on time - I am mailing them all next Saturday so the international ones may be late) and wants to share a postal address in a private message to me, they will get a postcard. International LT members are welcome :) No requirement to send one back - unless you want to.

FYI, I have handed the reigns for setting up Club Read 2022 to the capable hands of Lisa (labfs39). Those of you who so graciously maintain other community threads here (Questions for the Avid Reader, What Are You Reading Now, Quarterly Favorites...etc) should let her know if you wish to continue doing so or not.
I'm not going anywhere, but I felt a hand-off to a somewhat younger LTer was in order. This group has always been, from the beginning, a fabulous, varied and intelligent community of readers to hang out with.

Big shoes to fill! Lois (avaland), Rebeccanyc, and .Monkey. have kept the Club Read flame lit for 13th years. That must be one of the longest runs for a LibraryThing group.
Please let me know if you have ideas for community threads/group reads. I'm in the process of setting things up for next year, and it's a great time to try something new.
Thanks too to SassyLassy, AnnieMod, and RidgewayGirl for agreeing to curate existing community threads again next year!

Just putting this here - now LT groups CAN have multiple administrators. We don't need it usually once the group is set but there is that option as well if we decide to use it.

>97 avaland: Thanks avaland for your admin role in the Club Read for those years.
And thanks to labfs39 for stepping in, and to SassyLassy, AnnieMod, and RidgewayGirl! Thanks all for contributing to make this group so open and cosy!

Thank you, Lois, for keeping the wheels turning for so long.. and to Lisa for stepping up for such a big job. Sassy, Annie and Kay you all do a great job keeping the other threads going. Thank you!

Echoing everyone's comments. Thank you to all who make this such a lovely group to be part of.
Now when are we having the CR party?!

Ditto—thanks for all you've done and are about to do! I agree with Alison... we need a CR happy hour... how many people can the average Zoom meeting hold?

>107 lisapeet: The free one - up to 100 participants.

Gosh, all, I'm blushing....you are all very welcome (admin isn't that much of a big deal, really. It's you all that keep it going!)

>107 lisapeet: Darn I was hoping for some sort of progressive -- starting in New England, down the east coast hitting NYC, South Carolina, heading over to Texas, swinging up to catch the Midwesterners (MI, MN).... Not sure yet if once we hit the west coast of Canada if we'd go to Asia or a long flight to Europe....
ETA: And yes, a big thank you to all the people that started the group, started the regular threads, and those that create their own fascinating threads for me to peruse even thought I'm lousy at keeping up my own thread.
